Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Gilmore, Rabbitte, De Rossa et. al were originally members of the Democratic Left, a party founded following a schism within the Workers Party. There was a perception within the traditional Labour Party (not unfounded, I think) that those who came in from the cold soon took over the Labour Party. An Irish political trojan horse.

The Lost Revolution by Brian Hanley and Scott Miller does a wonderful job of explaining how many of those now finding themselves out in the cold within Labour came from a background in the Official IRA and the Workers Party.

It's a great read, and a very balanced account of the machinations taking place within the broad socialist and republican churches during the 70's and 80's.

It's a great read. A balanced and nuanced perspective on Modern Irish history is always worthy of a read. I doubt you'll be casting off the the shackles supposedly imposed on you by capitalism though and extolling the virtues of socialism!!

    Enjoy.

She's a woman. Joan wants to promote women for the sake of their gender. Be thankful for small mercies, though. There was talk of Kathleen Lynch being given the Education job. That would have been the ultimate irony.

There in lies the inherent problem. Ministers promoted because of gender and/or electoral pandering rather than based on ability

I noticed on the RTE news last night when he was congratulating Ged Nash on his appointment that Gerry Adams seemed unable to pronounce the word 'Louth'. Twice he called it 'Lout'. Considering it is his constituency you think he could get the name right.

If they do that it will just be getting rid of any pretence that the money will be spent on local services and will instead disappear into the black hole of the overall tax take. As we continue to repay the gambling debts of German banks and pension funds who flooded the Private banks of Spain and Ireland with cash our water tax is is more likely to pay for a new water treatment plant in Berlin than in Dublin.

Very telling that he didn't take up his backbench seat but instead chose to sit behind the railings on the opposition side of the house.

    Watch out Joan.

Why is Jan O'Sullivan being promoted? It's not as if her previous brief of Housing has been a roaring success

Failure was never an obstacle to promotion in our government - sure Hogans massive successes has got him a massive pay rise with his EU Job

Same old same old, not new politics, jobs for the boys and girls, to keep vested interests (labour) happy

Junior ministries used by government to help people get get reelected, or reward for voting with the government (and not along lines of your promises)

what about the Politician that stopped off in knock on his way to the dail and said "our lady" looked after him...should we really have people like that in government?

Well we have voters like that (as the Reform Alliance mass public meeting proved) so it stands to reason we have politicians like that. However if the demise of civil war politics is the big change in Irish political life at the next two elections I suspect the demise of traditional catholic fundamentalism will be the big change in the two elections after that. They are literally a dying breed and while the catholic youth elements are vocal they are tiny in numbers.

He probably didn't do it at all but the little soundbite got him a lot pf press and it will go down well with a lot of his constituents.

He knows what he is doing.

Don't knock the power of prayer. Ring will not be the only government T.D. praying this summer.

Ml Ring was joking. He probably drives to Dublin along the N5 which does not go thru' Knock

Prayer had little to do with it.

He always polled well, even in opposition.

He was one of Kennys strongest supporters in the 2010 heave.

He puts great energy into his work, and deserves his place on the team

Thanks; any more details e.g. about the bonfire.
