Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Moving to Edinburgh for a Year!

So I'm moving Edinburgh in September for a year for college, and I'm wondering if anyone can offer any insight about the city? It looks like I'll be living on the Warrender Park Road. Is it a good area? Any places to avoid?

Also, since I'll be on a typical skint student diet, any recommendations about where I can get bargains on food, drink etc.?

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Warrender Park is nice, student heavy area so you're only issues might be late night parties! On google maps you'd see a big park close by (meadows) great place for a run and lots of activities.

Most of the supermarkets have a 3 for 10 deal on meat so you'd get a dozen chicken breasts for that, frozen food wise farmfoods might be your friend. Only downside to where you live is that there's no supermarket close by but rather those "express" stores. Still I think sainsburys is a short bus wide away.

Cheers, I've been looking it up on google, it seems pretty close to the university, and most reviews of the place say the flats are comfy enough.

Think I'm sharing the place with four others so it should be decent craic. In terms of nights out is there a particular part of the city that's best for pubs/clubs etc?

I'd imagine as a student you'd be hitting Grassmarket quite a lot which has opium as mentioned above amongst tons of others. I prefer the places on George street but I'd imagine you wouldn't get too much change there as a student. Could be wrong though.

For local boozers you have plenty around you, The Links Hotel bar does decent pub grub and is run by a Wicklow fella, handy for games and all that.

I presume your going to Napier by where your living?? Theres a Tesco at the corner of the street outside Merchiston Campus and there is a Marks and Spencer down on Morningside road which slashes the prices of all sorts of great premade meals at 8pm if your feeling a little bit lazy.

As for Nightlife... You'll be spending some time in Malones. Great spot for Irish students living in Edinburgh!!
Make sure to get the discount card... There will be a hefty saving over time if you spend as much time in there as we did! ;)

As mentioned above, Grassmarket is the place to be for students in Edinburgh!
Enjoy it!! I wish I could go back and do it again!! ;)

I'm here for the summer so can try to give some advice!

Farmfoods is great for cheap stuff alright. Not just frozen stuff too, things like pasta, tins of tomatoes etc are good value there as well. Nicolson St isn't too far from where you are and has a good few places to pick up food - a big Tesco Metro (which seems to be better value than Tesco at home. There's also a Tesco Express but the Metro has more stuff), Lidl, a small Sainsbury's, the aforementioned Farmfoods and a Poundland (same as Dealz at home, handy for small things).

Really? Not a fan of the place at all, felt completely souless the two times I've been, I'd be recommending the Earl of Marchmont, Bennetts or the Cuckoos Nest if you're in that part of town.

Maybe it's changed, both times I've been there (United vs Liverpool and England vs Scotland) it was great.

The Blackbird (just across the road from Bennetts) is a nice spot too.

Hi, I'm also going to Edinburgh for the coming year. But struggling to find a house to live in as student accommodation is expensive! Does anyone have contact details of private landlords or any houses looking for one student? thanks!

Have you tried gumtree? That's where I sorted accomodation first when I moved over. Right now might be a bad time to look as most places are still in the middle of gouging tourists for the festival.
