I've just bought a new flashgun for my old D70s, and I can't get the camera to fire with the flash on board!

I've fitted the flashgun and switch on, the camera tries to meter, but doesn't release.

I can't see the flashgun illuminating and I'm wondering if I need to change a setting on the camera to get it to talk more to the flashgun, or is the flashgun faulty.

With no flash gun the camera's own flash pops up - after fitting the flash gun it doesn't, so SOMETHING is working.

It's irritating, all I get is the buffer size when I fully depress the shutter release!

Any help very much appreciated, even if it is just a better forum to ask.
