Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Delighted he got a good send off last year, but sad to see him go. Loved how easily he got the team arguing. Legend.

Really sad (and sudden) news. Growing up, he was always on the telly with the soccer. His retirement was sad enough but he was still out there somewhere. Now he's gone. RIP Bill.

Very sad news. Such a gentleman and was fantastic in front of the camera.

Thanks for the memories Bill. Rest In Peace.

"People will only realise how much they miss Bill, when he's gone".

    Too right!

RIP and thanks for all the memories, picking us up off the floor at the losses and letting us lose the run of ourselves after the wins!

Poor man barely got to enjoy his retirement. Thoughts are with his family.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

R.I.P. ... always came across as a decent, friendly, humble person. A brilliant broadcaster - played such a big part in Irish sports fans highs and lows. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

I'm no expert.....but would it be fair to say that we lost a huge figure in Irish sport today.

Okie doke. We'll leave it there so. :(

Rarely does a celebrity death raise more than a "that's sad" comment from me but this news has made me genuinely sad.

My earliest football viewing memories involve Bill or Elton Welsby from ITV.

He was been part of my football viewing experience right up until he retired and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Thanks for all the wonderful memories and moments Bill and rest in peace.

    :(

    Very sad news.

Having never met the man, I felt like I knew him inside out. One of those constant sporting figures all through my life.

Certainly didn't seem to have an ego about him. Just a man chatting with friends about football among other things.

I don't think I've ever heard a bad word against him which speaks volumes for him.

    Rest In Peace.

i never get choked up at these 'celebrity' deaths.

i just watched that RTE tribute from when he retired.

    good grief, I'm a state.

Grew up listening to him. He seemed like such a nice man.

He was a master at stirring the pot and he could relate to all his viewers, regardless of their age or demograph.

    RIP :(

Watching Ireland play hasn't, nor ever will be, the same without him.

    RIP.

Masterful broadcaster. Take's intelligence to wind up people to get the right answers out of them. All while appearing to ask the silly question.

    Poor fellow had only retired

Second captains did a great interview with him last year

One of the best presenters about, knew that his job was to get best out of the panelists. Something a lot of presenters overlook and try to take the limelight themselves.

It's funny how the death of someone like this can really shock you.

Been busy all day and only just heard it on the 3pm news. I'm sad.

But he was only a guy in the TV, a presenter who I never meet or knew from Adam, but you feel you knew him, don't you?

Rest in peace Bill, you were a true pro at your job and will be missed.

Truly gutted to hear this news. Not much I can add to what's already been said. Such a brilliant broadcaster who I grew up with as he chaired that brilliant panel with superb professionalism and efficiency. By all accounts, what you seen with him is what you got, a gentleman.

RIP Bill. Will never be forgotton.

I don't know if anybody follows Roddy Doyle on Facebook but he posted this and pretty much sums it all up.

    -See Bill O’Herlihy died.
    -I can’t believe it.
    -I know – . Same here.
    -I can’t - . He was brilliant.
-The best – him and the other lads. The best thing on telly.
-He was one o’ those people - . Did yeh ever meet him?
-No, but I know wha’ yeh mean. It was like we knew him.
    -An’ liked him.
    -Loved him.
    -He took the football seriously.
    -Like politics.
    -Exactly. He took us seriously.
-He’d have the lads riled up an’ you’d flick across to ITV an’ there’d be
ads, and yeh’d flick back to Bill an’ the lads would still be shoutin’ –
an’ yeh’d flick to BBC an’ they’d be analysin’ Thierry Henry’s fúckin’
cardigan. An’ back to RTE an’ Bill an’ the lads would still be talkin’
    abou’ football.
    -No shíte or fashion statements.
    -Except Bill’s ties.
-D’yeh know what it is - ? He made me happy.
    -Yep.
-After watchin’ him. I might be shoutin’ at the telly. But I was always
    happy.
-You can’t say more abou’ the man, really, can yeh? He made us happy.
    -Okey doke.
    -Good night an’ God bless.

Legend. He is what we call in Cork a character. The soccer coverage on RTE is a lot poorer without him. Maloney just doesn't have the charm and talent Bill had.

76 isn't a bad age and going in your sleep is what we all can only hope for. Still you would have hoped he could of enjoyed retirement.:(
