The best thing about transfer day? Realising that the deadline is only for submitting papers, meaning that the bulls**t can go on for another hour or so.

I think we will see more and more of chambers in the DM role

In time we probably will BUT he's a bit raw still.
Some day i'd like to see him alongside Arteta as a partner in a two man DM position maybe against the likes of Chelsea away. His pace would compliment Arteta's. Wenger needs to change things for games like that against the likes of Chelsea's power. A 4 2 3 1 formation so to speak. Might work.

Worst transfer deadline day ever in every regard.

Arsenal have applied for an extension for the Welbeck deal

OK heading to sleep here. Hoping I wake up to find Wenger snuck through a world class DM in on the sly :) (God I am an optimist!)

Jasus all these 21 yr olds making me feel ancient Tayto must feel like a relic.

I'm a relic who feels like a 21 year old. (act it sometimes too).:)

    One of them hugely inexperienced.

United fan here. Just dropping in to see the feelings on Welbeck. Think he will be a smashing player for Arsenal, his pace alone will be a huge weapon for Arsenal. Disappointed to see him gone and with a good run of games he has potential to be your Sturridge.

Were just gonna have to promote pleggy or Hayden

Suppose we only have to get to Jan and reinforce then but we 'll need abit of luck

DONE DEAL: Valencia have signed Alvaro Negredo on a season-long loan deal from Man City. (Via @valenciacf). pic.twitter.com/THWBd5d7zz

They would never have loaned to us I guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭kev250

We survived it last year lets hope we can do it again.

Sagna had the ability to play cb which was a a bonus, we did look very streched last year at the back still.

Negredo off to valencia, would have been a half decent deal if they would have sold to us.

How long is Gibbs out for? Extra important if Monreal needs to play CB now

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,254 ✭✭✭shano_88

Looks like Monreal is our 4th choice CB. Not ideal at all. Really suprised we didn't get one in. Could really cost us.

    Happy with Welbeck.

Happy enough with Welbeck. Not signing a CB is a complete disaster though. We were light there last year too now we're one man lighter.

So we're including "upgrading" Bendtner (8 league apps), Miyachi (1 league app) and Fabianski (1 league app) as meaning something? Why not just go with how the young players are a year older and therefore we've strengthened, it probably represents a bigger upgrade.

    Thanks for the stats.

Now we know that if Campbell, Ospina and Welbeck make more than 10 league appearances between them this season, we have got upgrades.

Look forward to discussing this with you in May. Until then.

"Arsenal have got the deal sheet into the Premier League regarding the signing of Danny Welbeck. That means they have got a couple of hours to submit the relevant paper work. It shows the commitment of both clubs and the player in going through with it. I understand the fee is in the region of £16m."

Woeful end to the window from us. Not signing a CB is embarrassing.

Overall, a mixed window. We've improved, but lost some depth in the area we could least afford it, defence. Not signing a DM is very disappointing. Sanchez is the obvious highlight, hopefully will turn into a great signing for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52,428 ✭✭✭✭tayto lover

The important thing now is to get all our players fit and hope we have no serious injuries to CB's. The players need to get into winning ways and kick on. I never paid much heed to Wellbeck but i hope he is a success and scores plenty of goals.
I do have serious doubts about the season ahead though. Hope i'm wrong.

    Come on you Gunners.

Ridiculously lacking in cover at the back. Suspensions and injuries are likely to cost us plenty of goals this season

Feel free to bookmark this for discussion then. I'm sure even a one point improvement will be evidence for all of those players being super-important upgrades.

There would be the odd good deal to be had in January.
Its not a total disaster yet, we should manage till the new year but a cb has to be signed in January

underwhelmed by the whole welbeck thing. don't understand why we just don't give Campbell more playing time. hes had a good world cup and his confidence must be high. just throw him in there.

unless welbeck steps straight into the team and starts banging them in then its pretty much a waste of 16m for me. I agree with the poster a page or two back who said sooner or later were gonna have to bite the bullet and splash out on a real top centre forward - all were doing at the minute is just putting it off.

hope it works out but to me he just seems to be a pure athlete rather than a footballer. I think if he was that good van gaal wouldn't have let him go especially to a team that could be considered a direct rival

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭Ed Winchester

£16mill is too much money for Arsenal to pay for a bench warmer. He'll be straight into the starting XI I'd say. Doesn't fill me with much confidence.

75 pages of posts on this thread today! That's a lot of guff!

Turned my phone off at quarter to 9. So it's Welbeck for £16m, maybe, and nobody else???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,906 ✭✭✭✭PhlegmyMoses

Welbeck will be really good for you guys. Gutted to lose him.

So is it safe to assume the Chambers is the third CB, and Bellerin will be promoted to number 2 specialist right back? He seemed to look ok from what I've seen, and obviously has speed on his side if he broke Theo's sprint record.

Still seems strange to send Jenkinson out on loan with the way things have worked out.

That wouldn't be all bad IMO.

I know the vermaelen deal was too good to turn down but we shouldnt have let him go until we had a replacement. Would have helped the DM area too by allowing Chambers to deputize there, now he cant.

The falcao bit yeah but we seriously need another CF option.

No CB is a disaster. Really shocked we couldn't get someone in. Kos is already injured. We have a tough.run coming up with important Pl and CL games coming up. Mert and kos can't play all the games. Didn't like the look of Monreal at CB at all preseason.

Can't help but laugh at the guy who's represented by a pic of winger making this statement.

Understand Arsenal fans being aggrieved at the lack of defensive signings but at least wellbeck should mean Sanogo isn't starting and once Giroud comes back he (wellbeck) will be a good squad player IMO. Lad works hard for his team mates too

The difference is how they play through the middle. Watch Welbeck's highlight reels, all his best moments come through the middle, whereas Campbell has largely looked at his best in the wide positions where we are already over supplied. In the World Cup at least, Campbell looked very isolated at times in the central positions. That's why Sanogo starts ahead of Campbell, because even though Sanogo has yet to find his feet he links up far better with those around him.

I actually beginning to think this could be a good bit of business. Welbeck never really had an opportunity to shine at United because he had Rooney and RVP ahead of him for the central position. He's also an extremely hard working player, so even if Giroud or Sanchez end up ahead of him for the central positions, his work rate on the left could be invaluble for the big games.

Still, it's all irrelevant. What the **** is going on with the CB position? Miquel goes permanently yet we've brought nobody in. Does this mean Hayden is our fourth choice CB or does Wenger think Monreal can do the role and Flamini slot in at LB if we're short? I haven't a bloody notion.

So is Isaac Hayden fourth choice centre back then? Probably Monreal which is disgraceful from Wenger. He isnt even good in his natural position.

    Auto correct but yeah.

Wonder are there any defenders floating about out of contract ATM and therefore could still be signed

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,756 ✭✭✭emergingstar

I'd say Monreal is 4th choice but I hope he gives Hayden a chance

Happy with his reign, but honestly can't remember the last time we've gone through a transfer window and I've thought to myself "We've addressed all our problems, let the games begin!". Disappointing, oh well!
