Is water the new oil? Some Wall Street vultures seem to think so. Peter Brabaek (ex Nestle CEO) thinks that water isn't a fundamental human right and merely a commodity to be sold and profited from.

Get out and protest today before its to late. If you think the water bill in January will be bad, it will be far worse down the line. A mass effort can put a stop to this.

People are being played by the hard left political parties in Ireland.

If you think this march is anything other than an attempt to shore up political support for the likes of SF, PBP or AAA, you're only kidding yourself.

A tiny minority of the population are about to dance to the tune of these pied pipers - won't make a blind bit of difference to water charges coming in.

Let our Government, who are one of the highest paid Governments in the world, and the likes pay back the debt!

Not the likes of families who have joint incomes of between €400-€600 a week and have to pay mortgages, other utility bills, property tax, petrol, tax, insurance and have just enough left for a bit of food shopping at the end of the week!

People laughing at the marchers today you should be ashamed of yourselves, God forbid you ever ended up in a similar situation you wouldn't be so quick to laugh at people standing up for themselves.

I'm laughing at your belief that the government salaries could pay back the debt.

Hard Left is something I will never be. Centre Right I am. We do not have straight forward centre right politics in this country. For me this is about fairness. People simply do not have the money for this. Both FG and FF have shown themselves to be as bad as each other.

Why to you feel the need to try and insult any posters intelligence because their opinion differs to yours. What is your interest in IW? Its fairly obvious you have some link to them.

It's handy for them to be able to spin the line that the money collected by IW is going to foreign bankers. But how would they explain why countries like Norway and Canada which escaped a banking crisis charge their populations for water. Just as countries like Greece and Iceland which had banking crises do.

Our unique position among developed countries goes back to 1977 (when local taxes which paid for bins and water were abolished along with Motor Tax). The only people now putting faith in that failed model are SF and the groups you mentioned. Everyone else including FF themselves have recognised that to depend on income tax and VAT to fund nearly everything is just economic lunacy.

They will still fund a portion of the cost of water but that is normal. They fund a portion of the cost of every train and bus journey but people don't protest that some of the cost should not fall on the end user. As a PAYE person I am glad to see other sections of the population having to pay a bit. Even if it won't help me since I know that the country will still have to keep borrowing. Well off people with big houses and accountants at least can't avoid property tax and water and bin charges. We have unique socialists in this country who want no tax on private property and no service charges.

Long before any banking crisis, previous governments tried and failed to bring in property tax and water charges. They did suceed in reintroducing Motor Tax and they brought in bin charges. The failed 1977 gamble has gradually unwinded.

But I am not discounting the possibility, even probability that SF will get into power and reverse the whole lot again.

Typical 'someone else needs to pay for it' rubbish.

    How would you know?
Carried out a survey have we and then elected ourselves spokesman of 'the people'?

Try to cut services and you'll have the exact same people and the exact same political parties out marching - funny that isn't it?.

Well they're the ones that caused the country to be in debt why should we pay for it when we simply cannot afford to? It's not "the typical someone else needs to pay for it" rubbish as you said either, we're paying tax and property tax already.

We've been paying water taxes for years, are those taxes going to be reduced?

So the huge amount of people who took out silly mortgages and can't pay them back now aren't to also blame?

Politicians didn't put the country in debt. You could argue they failed to prevent it but the cause was the economy expanding too fast and then collapsing when the property bubble burst.

And yes, it's looking very likely there will be a tax reduction of some sort this year.

It really shows the attitude of some of these protestors.

All it is is ah sure its the governments fault were in this mess.

I said it last night, there is around a 100 people sleeping rough each night in Ireland.

Everyone else has a roof over their head. Its not as bad as these mobs are trying to make out.

It really is a tiny amount but you have Simon and whoever else making it sound like an epidemic to guilt people/government into giving them funding.

Some of those 100 may prefer to be on the streets because some hostels etc. won't let them drink or obviously do drugs like they can on the street

No they will be put towards reducing our deficit even further which needs to be done. Just cus you don't like the fact that we are running a massive deficit and need to pay it down doesn't make it not true.
