Landlord Convicted over failure to register

For any renters out there who's landlord hasn't registered them with the PRTB point them to this story.

The Private Residential Tenancies Board has secured two criminal convictions against a Landlord who failed to register his tenancies.

The properties had been referred to Dublin City Council for inspection by the Department of Social Protection which had received an application for rent supplement payments to tenants at the addresses, and had a concern about the standard of the dwellings.
On review, it appeared that the tenancies were not registered and the matter was referred to the PRTB.
The Landlord failed to attend Court and was convicted in his absence.

Landlord must have decided not to engage with the PRTB at all. My understanding is that an enforcement notice is issued, giving the landlord X days to register the tenancy. If that is not done the it goes to court.

It should be a reminder to landlords

It's great to see the system working, even if the results are few and far between. I would hope that stories like this would encourage people to follow the rules and start reporting where applicable so we can get more results like this.

I'd prefer to the see the system completely reform, where by the tenant who is generally offered the most protection has to register themselves. or that the landlord registers the property and that is it, why the requirement to register every single tenant at an additional cost?

Of course, a tenancy which is not registered has absolutely no effect on the tenants rights.
