It crashed just over an hour ago and all the news channels already have weapons and military experts on for interviews. Can they not just wait until more details become clear before whipping up a load of fear and hysteria?
This is the inevitable consequence of the 24 hour news instant media world in which we live.

He's an ATC in Schiphol, start up control. He spoke to the pilots to give them start up instructions today. Gets home from work to hear this.

Jesus, he must be very shaken up. Hope he's okay. :(

RTE news interview/report mentioned the airspace was NOT closed to Civil Aircraft. It remains to be seen if the different parties follow-up with claims that Airlines and Civil Aircraft were/were not warned to keep outside Russian/Ukrainian border airspace zone/s.

They only people with the technology to shoot it down are the Russians.

They will immediately blame "Separatists" and annex the rest of the non-Russian Ukraine using this as an excuse.

    And we'll let them.

Since when did it become our business, and obligation to meddle in the affairs of other countries? We can't even run our own country.

That's your initial reaction? Stock prices?

Could be a good opportunity to invest seeing as how this will go away eventually just like the missing plane did and stock prices should rise again . The shares could eventually be sold at a profit. People take advantage of bad situations all the time .
Obviously it's an awful tragedy that people died.

Didn't think surface to air missiles could reach 33,000 feet.

Surely the jet has a sensor to know a missile is locked on it which would help identify where it came from once the black box is recovered. Dont think the pilot could do anything once the missile is locked on.

This could get a wee bit intensive......

An air to air missile? Find it very hard to believe a Ukrainian military pilot would engage a passenger jet. Must be ethnic russians from the ground.

BBC reporting it has to have been an air - air missile, who knows, whoever pressed the button on the rocket is a bastard. End of.

They said it could also have been a ground to air missile, but that would require radar tracking at that altitude.

He's more stunned. You can't let this sort of thing get to you too much or you couldn't do the job.

Thanks for expanding on that. Your initial post was as clear as mud. Hope he's ok.

It's got to the stage where Putin is going to have to send in Russian troops to oust these thugs in charge of Ukraine once and for all.

Surely this would not have been the only commerical airliner flying over that particular area today. Obviously, it's a tragedy but a particularly awful coincidence for Malaysian Airlines considering their recent situation.

Awaiting the list of nationalities onboard now, a horrible situation.

Sorry for that, I'm just never quite sure how much I'm allowed to say. He'll be alright after a few whiskys.

Dutch news was showing the live flight tracker, not a single flight is passing over Eastern Ukraine now.

If passenger planes leaving Europe are getting shot down on Europe's doorstep, it is our business to meddle now.

Al jazerra is saying that it was a soviet era surface to air missile. They said it would have been a highly sophisticated large piece of equipment so If Russia did not give the separatists such equipment, how did they sneak across the border from Russia into Ukraine?

Al jazerra also mentioned that this is the 3rd plane shot down in the area and one of them was a Ukrainian military plane shot down yesterday.

Europe should respond and the likes of Germany and France should assist by sending in forces to assist Ukraine to end this now.

The handheld ones (Strelas, Stingers) wouldn't be capable of that, but the big truck-mounted ones could.

    Ukraine have them too.

Would it be any less horrible if they were of different nationalities?

This like a news headline designed by committee, the two biggest international stories of the year somehow connected, melded together.

This reminds me of Gravity too,
Russia shooting down satellites and ruining everybody lives

    RIP to all.

Jesus it would never have entered my mind the thought of being shot down on a commercial flight. It's really shocking stuff if confirmed.

    Has happened before:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Lines_Flight_007

It's so crazy that it's able to happen though.

Yet you think it's ok to pontificate about Israel but when it comes to Comrade Putin you're all "nothing to see here folks"....

No, of course not. I realised it sounded weird as soon as I posted that.
