Hey ding dong you ought to remember that 4 or 5 of these lads played in hugely important games, in fact games that are of much more significance than a mickey mouse warm up game in Dundee. . And many of these boys are doing their Leaving Cert chasing 500+ points. Many of them are at boarding school where they havent been home for a month or more. They led 10-3 at htime and understandably got tired and disjointed in the second half when many switches were made. So before you give your silly throwaway remarks just give it a little thought. These guys are 17-18 year old kids giving of their best in trying circumstances.

not as if the Scottish 18s don't have important exams soon, as well as some going to boarding school, so that can hardly be used as an excuse.

How long were Scotland together? Ireland would've only met up a few days ago after loads played in cup finals?

At least 5 key players on that team had one of the most important games of their young lives just last Tuesday and were out with their friends late in to tuesday night. Give the guys a break.Better to judge them on their FIRA performance and the clubs team have their own tournament.

Personally I would not have selected anyone of the finalists in Schools Provincial Cups as winner still probably on too much of a high after winning and losers on too much of a low. In the great scheme of things not a particularly important loss.

Isn't the Junior final on today?
    Any updates?

    It's on Setanta.

    16:15 kick off

22 mins in and Rock are 5-0 up and look the slightly better side

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

    5-5

Great Terenure try finished by the Winger Mernaghan

    Conversion missed

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,178 ✭✭✭Quint2010

Don't quite know how Terenure are still in this game! Some great back play from both teams but 'Rocks pack look way better drilled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

Rock losing McMahon for the second half is a big blow.

Dardis is the stand out player for Nure.
Really good defender and strike runner.
    Very impressed by him.

Rock aren't using Liam Turner effectively yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

La Grue missed a penalty and then knocked over a subsequent one.

    8-5 Terenure. 25 mins left

Great maul by Terenure and over in the corner by Vaughan wearing number 3.

    Conversion missed.

    13-5 Terenure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

Rock turned down kickable penalties on a couple of occasions and managed to get over the line.

2nd Try for the Rock 7 McGagh converted by Caputo

    13-12 Nure.
    Game very much on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

Terenure gave away a penalty in front of the posts.
    Caputo slotted it over.

    15-13 Rock.

    Time almost over

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Inspector Coptoor

    All over.
49th junior cup for Rock and third in a row.

There'll be some strength in depth in their senior set up next year

Feck it anyway but well done Blackrock they deserved to win.

'Is it just me , or do many genuine schools rugby supporters find that what Gavin Scummiskey writes in his match reports is the greatest load of ****e that was ever written. He ought to be writing about soccer in one of the tabloids .I do hope that he enjoyed watching the munster and connacht lads storming the RDS on tuesday last. His hero- worship of Madigan, Fitzgerald, Timoney etc would make you want to vomit. He openly criticises 17 and 18 yr old young fellas who have spent countless hours in pursuit of success for their schools.Obviously he never made the grade during his time in Williamstown. .Contrast his bitter twisted style of reporting with that of T.Ward who always comes across with notes of praise for these kids . Our Gav has
obviously got a plank on his shoulder.' Rugerhugs

Totally agree with you, he's dreadful, so biased he should be working for the KGB. Tony Ward is way fairer, he understands the whole system perfectly, the cups are not just about 'Rock, Clongowes, Michaels. That's why to see Roscrea win it this year is so heart warming, their tradition of giving everything in the cup competitions win lose or draw over the years means all that effort and all those players and past pupils who have represented and supported the school deserve a share in this glory. The kind of guff Cummisky writes is deeply disrespectful to those people who have been in and played for the smaller/unfashionable schools if all he can see is the usual suspects. And don't get me started on the two clowns who commentate on the games for Setanta..

Cummiskey praised Roscrea very highly after beating Rock and even made them favourites for the final against traditional powerhouse of Belvo. Really think people are going OTT on Cummiskey, I think he's a good reporter and I don't think he's as harsh with the pen as some people are making him out to be. He doesn't slam or massivley criticise players.

He offers critiques that are unfortunate truths without exploiting the player but a hush-hush job of any mistake made in the match and for flat out only praise would be ridiculous IMO.

I don't think any player would or should turn down chance to play for their country. In greater scheme of things not an important loss but the side needed a game ahead of the FIRA competition and the guys who played in schools finals will be needed in that competition so get everyone up to speed in game ahead of that competition

Cummiskey doesn't deserve all this criticism and Ward has his faults as well...

Is their many more competitions to be finished across the provinces? Development/Emerging Cup finals in Connacht are Wednesday in Sportsground but many other finals to be played?

Jarleths Tuam won Junior Emerging Cup beating St. Tiernan's Crossmolina 19-14
Calasanctius Oranmore won Connacht Junior Development Cup beating Presentation Athenry 5-0
Bish beat Clifden Community 7-0 in Senior Development final

Ridiculously tough conditions in Sportsground for all 3 games. Kept on getting worse and worse. Lucky for their to be scores in 2nd and 3rd games with conditions so horrible

Finals will be streamed on the Rugby Europe Chanel on Dailymotion but other games will not be streamed live. Will have to rely on twitter for opening two games

England beat Portugal 85-5, Italy beat Wales 14-13, France beat Scotland in opening quarter finals in Rugby Europe u18 quarter finals

Ireland drew with Georgia 8-8 in normal time but lost 3-1 in penalty kicks so will be in the 5th-8th playoffs

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭its_phil

No harm on the lads and good on Georgia but that's dreadful stuff

Italy must have decent side, especially as Wales beat their English counterparts:
    www. inattheside.com/wales-u18-beat-england-u18-in-swansea/

(I cant post links because too few posts)
For Ireland to lose to Georgia, yes i know their still teens but, that is awful. We should be putting a cricket score on them. Although i am slightly pleased, it shows the game is growing very very well in Georgia.

Could be wrong but Italy recently made drastic changes to their age grade development system and good to see improvements in their sides at under 18 level.
I wouldn't say we should be putting a cricket score on them. Georgia are producing huge numbers towards the pro game and primarily through the pack...

Interestingly also heard in recent days the Irish u18 schools will not be competing in this competition next year as Easter/this competition will be very close to Paddys Day and the schools finals so the u18 clubs side will compete next year

Does this mean that the schools side will compete in the tri nations event, with the England Clubs and Schools u18 xv (academy players non-eligible) and France fed u18 XV? Or just not have any fixtures at all? I know that Wales, France, Englaand all go to South Africa for a tournament in the summer but since Ireland do not do this surely not competing in the Fira will mean the side is all but done? Feel free to correct me if i am wrong on any of these points.

Blackrock beat St. Michaels in Junior 2nds Final in Donnybrook yesterday, clean sweep for them at Junior Level.

A lot of talk about big shake-ups in coaching staff in Terenure and St. Michael's next year according to a few people who work and attend those respective schools.

Don't know about the tri-nations competition but they may just play a set of friendlies.
By not playing in FIRA the schools side is certainly not "done". The youths side wasn't "done" by being shunted out of the FIRA a few years ago so why would that be the case with the schools...

I hear Blackrock lost 33-7 to a touring side, Monument High School (ranked 5th in South Africa) yesterday. Can anyone confirm if it was the 1sts?

From what I heard it was the House 2nds and a few 3rds (next years SCT without the guys who started in the cup this year.) basically the best fourth and fifth years minus the top 10/11 players.

It wasn't firsts. It would have been one of the House sides, House 2nds.
That Monument side had 2 sides over here and have played games in Limerick, Galway and Athlone already
Saw their second team beat a Galwegians Under 17 team.

Not really. Exiles at 19s are not normally anywhere near as strong at under 19s as under 18s
Some in the squad listed with clubs in Ulster like Hugh Sloan had only moved to Ireland this season. Sloan had been in school in England and had been involved with Bath..

A few surprises, both in and out of the squad. Reilly hasn't played for tarf for a while as he was banned, so shocked he's there. Squad doesn't fill me with confidence I must admit.

All proceeds are going to Aidlink and The Hope Foundation.

As an English person, (with irish roots nd a interest in Irish underage rugby), I know a fair amount about schoolboy rugby over here. Something that i have noticed is a big difference is the contrasting attitude toward SEVENS.
Over here 7's is played widely. (Tournaments start around early february) with all the big schools competing in multitudes of festivals all around the country all culminating in the Rosslyn Park Nationak Seven's (282 schools competing in two u18 divisions).
Over in Ireland Sevens appears to be all but non existant?
Is this just an ignorant observation or is sevens not really played at all?

Its at all levels sevens isn't played much. There is some schools competitions for 7s held in Munster every season for the past few but it isn't any bit serious like in England and there has been some club 7s competitions over the past few years but again nothing like in England.
Just isn't the interest/background in playing 7s like elsewhere

Irish Schools losing at the moment
Georgia gone to penalty kicks for second game in a row. Currently in one with Italy in semi final. Game finished 6-6
    Georgia won that 6-5
    France beat England 23-19
Scotland drew with Portugal 0-0 but won 3-2 on penalties to make the 5th placed playoff

Georgia v France in the final

Correct. And, typical of Ireland, now, even thoughSevens has become an Olympic event, Ireland lags behind half the world in recognising the potential for Olympic success. By the time Sevens gets serious here we will be playing catch up to the half of the world referred to.

When will that be? Sevens is a joke, the Olympics won't change that.
