Does it say it was a United official or just an official of a buying club?

Could of been a pretending to be a Southampton official for example

You are right, it doesn't specifically say United. It says [FOREIGN CLUB]. The news of the player refusing to train came after United's bid though. I can't believe any player would want to go to Southampton so badly that he would refuse to train, and spark this entire row. I would find it highly unusual that Doyen's CEO wrote:

"MARCOS ROJO IS GOING TO SOUTHAMPTON"

“IF YOU DO NOT LET HIM HE WILL BEGIN TO CAUSE PROBLEMS IN THE ACADEMY”

Martinez out for Bayern till the new year, they will sign Vidal or Hummels or perhaps both to make up for it. I'm off on a weeks break form here if we don't sign anyone by close of business tomorrow. Blind faith in Ed has failed me!

That's exactly my point. If Doyen want to sell, and they are guaranteed their money regardless, why are they so insistent he goes to United?

I'm sure they don't care who buys him, as long as someone buys him. United are the wealthiest club interested right now

This is the way I presume it works out:

United pay €16M up front for Rojo
    SL/Doyen pay Spartak €2.2M being 20% of €11M (16-5)
    That leaves €13.8M
Doyen get €10.4M (nice profit on the 3.75M they put up for the fee from Spartak)
SL get €3.4M (still a profit on the €1.25M they parted with for his purchase)

I think SLs main issue is having to replace the guy for €3.4M. They could enter into another Doyen like deal but their actions over the past couple of days would probably make most investors run a mile from them.

    Didn't United already bid €20m?

Perhaps United might sweeten the deal for SL (and keep Doyen out of it) by way of a separate deal for a separate player.

    Just seen this in the united twitter account, grasping at any hope now for some quality new players;

@ManUtd: Please note: any new acquisitions will be handed shirt numbers that are currently vacant. #mufc

I suppose it gives us a little bit of hope.

I wouldn't read too much in to it, it's just their way of saying "It's safe to buy shirts now you guys" without having to close the door to more transfers.

Also they have just updated squad numbers so wouldnt make sense to change again after a week or so.

It's most likely due to the degree of blind faith, you obviously didn't believe enough. Or so my mother would have you believe.

It wasn't clear to me that the meeting and those texts involved the same clubs attempt to buy him. Sporting commented previously on how they received bids for him.

Anyway not important enough to argue as I am only speculating

Sporting President also spoke about trying to get more control over transfers, better deals for them in the market so this could well be part of trying to cut ties with investment groups.

I would not be surprised to see Vidal going to Bayern. If they really feel they need him, they'll go and get him. In the same way that Barca, Real, City and Chelsea go about things.

It'll be depressing, but Vidal is not the only good midfielder out there. We could easily have gotten two solid players for the amount being touted for Vidal.
How much would Bender and DeJong cost us? (sounds like a gay porno title) Edit: not that I would know the titles of any such movie.

The only thing that's more depressing is this gut feeling I have that LVG is going to wait until next summer, when he targets Strootman. It's a dangerous gamble IMO. What if next summer comes around and Bayern or Barca are also after him. Could be yet another midfield saga that ends in tragedy.

I'm so sick of all this transfer window bullsh*t at this stage. I can't wait for September the 1st and the inevitable panic buys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,161 ✭✭✭Cypher_sounds

You could make a faulty towers style comedy about our transfers

I'd say Rojo was 3rd choice, would we even have a 4th choice I don't know

It would last longer than the original series too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,366 ✭✭✭Robson99

If it means Chico, Nani and Ando going to Juve to get Vidal then get it done even if it means with 40m Euro. Nani and Ando are finished at utd and chico is 4th choice. For his sake and for the development of some of the younger players it would be better he go too. Also anyone saying its a bad deal well the wages saved on those 3 would cover Vidals

How many people think we will sign someone, anyone at this stage. I still hold out hope for a Vidal / Di Maria / Hummels type signing or a squad type player, but I'm probably delusional as there doesn't seem to be any hope or sign of anything going on. The only signings managed were ones which were in the pipeline for quite a while. Ed needs to be shown the door if we start the season with this squad (assuming that LVG did give him a list of players and that they all didn't refuse to come)

Can't believe we're starting the league with Blackett in the first 11, come on Ed!

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,292 ✭✭✭Adamocovic

I understand that people want big signings in, but how do we know the likes of Blackett, Keane, James, Powell etc, won't do well in the Premiership?

I'm not saying well win the league or get a top four with them but the experience could help them become key parts of the future of the club.

Who would have thought one of our best players last season would have been Januzaj? I remember people complaining when we were lacking players and he was given a spot.

Hopefully if the young lads are given chances they can go on to show desire and passion and put in some good performances.

The only thing I'd say on this is that he was very impressive in the pre-season game I saw, and apparently has been for all the rest as well.

He will probably play a game or two now as he is back-up to a defence that has a few injury worries at the moment.

Is the idea of strengthening the backline another way of saying "buying enough centre-halves that someone like Blackett won't get a PL game under any circumstances" for some people? Not disparaging that attitude if anyone has it, just curious to see if that's how some people see it.

I can't believe Blackett is starting in the same way I can't believe that Welbeck or Hernandez will be starting instead of RvP.

Blackett had a really, really good pre-season. Wouldn't want him as a long term first choice CB for the season, but he'll be more than capable of playing against Swansea.

He looked good in most of the pre season. But those games, except the Liverpool one, we're played at a fairly slow pace. So it's hard to know if he's capable of dealing with the pace and quality of the PL week in week out.
It's a risk. I think we will know a lot more after the Swansea game. And not just about Blackett. Also James and fletcher and young.
The real thing starts on Saturday.

Is Welbeck's status confirmed fit? Want to take a risk in FF and that involves either him or Chico starting in my team.

Daniel Taylor said he was told that Welbeck's injury was minor. I'd wait until Friday night/Saturday morning to make the decision though, good chance we'll know more by then.

    You can't win anything kids.

You can win a lot with youngsters in the team. Especially when they are surrounded by players like Bruce, pallister, schmeichel, Keane, cantona, mcClair, Irwin, cole.

The youngsters got all the headlines back then. But I think their successful promotion to the senior team says more about the older players ability to protect them and to keep performing to a high standard with so many inexperienced players around.

Ridiculous situation to be in with a day and a half to go until the season kicks off.

I know people will disagree but I'm kind of hoping the lack of transfers leads to some breakout performances from the young lads in the team.

VG has shown before he is very good at bringing youth players up to speed and it would be great if we got the likes of Blackett, Keane, James, Wilson, Powell etc playing well and becoming a big part of the team.

2 average players at best I reckon. United aren't close to anyone from what I'm seeing.

I think we should hire someone who is solely responsible for transfer business, not a director of football, someone who works with scouts, puts together a list of transfers over the course of the year, 100 or more, can have them in a lovely spreadsheet or whatever, manager approves his choices and we go about securing transfers all year round, from one down. Can't for the life of me see why a club as wealthy and successful as Manchester United has a guy like Woodward doing two jobs. Not that crazy, is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,979 ✭✭✭billyhead

I think one more might be the height of it. Possibly that being Rojo if this argument comes to pass. Our best line up will have to be

    De Gea

    Smalling Jones Evans

    Valencia Fletcher Herrera Shaw

    Mata

    Rooney RVP

    Subs:
    Rojo
    Young
    Wellbeck
    Kagawa
    Fellaini
    Lindegard

    It could be worse

Again the madness of letting David Gill and Fergie leave at the same time is highlighted...with the greatest respect to Woodward, he doesn't have the network of contacts that someone like Gill or David Dein has.

The transition should have managed more efficiently with Woodward acting as Gill's deputy for a period.

Agree, need someone who knows how to get a deal done. Football business is a dirty fecking world, need someone who understands and can deal with it.

    The madness?

If Gill and Ferguson wanted to go at the same time, there was nothing the club could or should have done to stop that. It was just unfortunate timing, it happens sometimes.
