Agree, need someone who knows how to get a deal done. Football business is a dirty fecking world, need someone who understands and can deal with it.

    Damien Comoli to the rescue?

Again the madness of letting David Gill and Fergie leave at the same time is highlighted...with the greatest respect to Woodward, he doesn't have the network of contacts that someone like Gill or David Dein has.

The transition should have managed more efficiently with Woodward acting as Gill's deputy for a period.

True. They should have told Fergie he wasn't allowed to leave. "Postpone your hip operation there, Alec. And forget about the loss of your wife's sister. Gill is off. We need you here for another couple of years."

Thing is: Evans, Jones, Fletcher and RVP all have bad fitness records. How often are we going to be able to play our strongest 11?
And it's when we have three or four of them injured that we'll struggle.

I really like what I see with Tyler Blackett. Remember when Louis Van Gaal took over at Bayern he immediately promoted Thomas Muller, David Alaba, and Holger Badstuber to the first team despite Bayern fans thinking it was pretty strange.

I think he was more referring to keeping Gill on for a transitionary period.

If Gill and Ferguson wanted to go at the same time, there was nothing the club could or should have done to stop that. It was just unfortunate timing, it happens sometimes.

There is actually. One of them wasn't in his 70s and was paid a fraction of the other's salary. A strong and competent Board would recognise the problem and offer Gill a significantly enhanced package to stay for a fixed period to manage the transition. The couple of million that it might have cost is insignificant compared to the cost of a badly managed transfer policy.

Gill had agreed to move on before SAF decided on his retirement. There was nothing to be done except move on.

    Maybe they did?

I also don't think Gill was all that he was cracked up to be either.

This isn't a case of a manager promoting youth because he thinks they're good enough though, he's already stated that he has a shortage of defenders.

I think Blackett would have played on the tour of the US regardless. And if he wasn't picked for the tour squad, nobody would have batted an eyelid. Van Gaal picked him, played him, liked him, played him more.

He definitely has benefited from a lack of transfer activity, but he looks a proper player.

Thing is, we don't really know why the club has been relatively inactive this summer.

    1. LVG is still assessing the squad and hasn't given Woody a list of targets.
    2. LVG gave a list of targets, and those players didn't want to play for us, or have chosen other clubs (Vermealen, Kroos, Hummels)
    3. Woody has not been able to do his job properly.
    4. LVG gave the list of targets, Woody did his job, but the price was too high for the Glazers to approve (Vidal, Di Maria)
    5. Some sort of devil's hybrid of the above

The obvious answer to this is, why on earth was there not a longer list of targets. We miss out on Vidal. Quickly move on to DeJong, Bender, McCarthy, Pjanic, Gustavo, Carvalho, Koke, etc, etc.

True. The club isn't aggressive enough or organised enough in its pursuit of new players.

Manchester United are in discussions with Sporting Lisbon in an attempt to conclude Marcos Rojo's proposed move to Old Trafford.

Sporting have rejected United's £15.9million bid for the 24-year-old.

A complicated contractual situation may turn into a legal row, with Rojo's advisors threating action.

But with the start of the Premier League season approaching, United are attempting to resolve the issue through negotiation.

I still live in hope that deals are nearly done for the likes of Di Maria, Vidal and a defender or 2. Its the transfer muppet inside me:P, and its just a matter or crossing a fewe ts and dotting a few is before an announcement is made. United learned from last Summer not to leak any info to the press so its possible lots of work in getting deals completed is happening behind closed doors.

    Things we do know.

    We finished 7th last season.
    We've bought 2 players.
Every other team in the league has strengthened more.

Not directed at you from here on.

I'm saying 5th if we don't buy a CM or a world class CB.

This **** is not acceptable for our club. Demand and expect better from it.

Totally agree. City, Arsenal and Chelsea are nailed on for the top 3 as things stand. Liverpool are probably stronger than us right now. Spurs under the new manager will be stronger than last season without a doubt. And there is also Everton.
Everton have a strong midfield. Barkley, McCarthy, Barry, Gibson. Osman, Mirallas, Pienaar. Matches are won and lost in midfield.

1 main thing we know is that LVG > DM, which should count for at least 3 league positions.

Van Gaal is a better manager but he isn't a miracle worker, if what we have now is what we had to work with for the season I think we would miss out on CL football again

Hopefully there's a few names going to come in but with every passing day you'd expect prices to go up, clubs not wanting to lose their better players so late in the window

Is the idea of strengthening the backline another way of saying "buying enough centre-halves that someone like Blackett won't get a PL game under any circumstances" for some people? Not disparaging that attitude if anyone has it, just curious to see if that's how some people see it.

No I'm worried about the defends we have!

Jones as has been well discussed on here, is at the moment, a bit of a liability, and I think this is more pronounced in a back three, granted there is heaps of potential.

Evans I really like, and I think playing in a back three will suit his game in many respects, pace aside, overall I'm pretty happy to have him.

Smalling I have serious doubts over, and I'd rate him as the weakest of the three. He has always reminded me of a player lacking confidence if given a decent run he could come good.

So for me this is the issue; we've got a poor defense, albeit with decent potential, but there all injury prone, and we're relying on inexperienced unproven players to take their place. I'd have no problem having Keane etc as backup to Ferdinand and Vidic in their peak.

    Just off the wires
LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The injury sustained by Manchester United defender Luke Shaw was caused by too many training sessions from new manager Louis van Gaal, former Wales assistant coach Raymond Verheijen said on Thursday.

England left back Shaw, signed from Southampton in the close season for around 30 million pounds ($50.06 million), may be out for a month with a hamstring problem and will definitely miss the start of the Premier League campaign at home to Swansea City on Saturday.

Verheijen called fellow Dutchman Van Gaal (LVG) a "great appointment" by United but at the same time accused the former Netherlands manager of "incompetence" and of working his players too hard.

"What LVG proves is that top coaches are not perfect. Even the world's best have deficiencies," Verheijen said on his Twitter feed.

"LVG is tactically superior to most other coaches but planning & periodisation is not his strongest point: double sessions & muscle injuries," added the Dutchman, an expert on football fitness and a frequent critic of the methods of top coaches.

"The Luke Shaw case is the climax of Manchester United's predictable pre-season injury crisis due to 'too much training too soon'."

Verheijen questioned why Shaw, 19, cut short his post-World Cup break and said he reported back for pre-season training too early.

Van Gaal accused the left back of being unfit on their pre-season tour of the United States.
    ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

"Luke Shaw had to do extra training to get fit. Who was in charge of his individual programme?," asked Verheijen.

"LVG's coaching skills & tactical superiority often compensate for this periodisation deficiency but there is clearly room for improvement."

Verheijen suggested Van Gaal's methods were responsible for a spate of injuries among the Dutch players before and during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, a tournament where they finished third.

"During the World Cup preparation the Dutch players had to do frequent double sessions so not surprisingly the muscle injuries accumulated," he said.

"At Man United, in the first few weeks, LVG has applied the same approach and, as expected, with the same result.

"But who is gonna tell a top coach that he has to raise his bar in a certain area? The 'yes-men' in his coaching staff? Journalists? Who...?"

Last season Verheijen attacked the training methods of Van Gaal's United predecessor David Moyes after Dutch striker Robin van Persie was injured.

He has also been critical in the past of top managers like Roy Hodgson, Roberto Mancini and Chris Coleman.

Raymond Verheijen is fitness specialist plenty of stuff from him if you google his name.

We'll get 2 or 3 more in over the next couple of weeks but my main reason for optimism is the system that VG plays which the players seem to be buying into.

Yeah, **** it! I've been on the positivity train most of the summer too and it's turned into a farce once again.

Sorry to say, but it all goes back to Fergie neglecting the midfield and then making a ludicrous appointment.

In a parallel universe we finished 2nd under Mourinho last season, still have Vidic, and have bought Fabregas and Matic and more.

I still give to the end of the window, but it ain't looking good.
