Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Well Daly has won, I imagine, but Mark hasn't go the pawn onto a safe black square yet so...

    R+B v R is a very difficult ending. I must study it.

Mark has lost now, A brave effort in fairness.

Yes he did very well considering that Heidenfeld was also very bad on time but maybe he could have held out if he kept his pawn on a black square?

Very nice win by Colm. Poor Mark. The R+B vs. R ending is a theoretical draw, but very winnable in practice. Keith Arkell has got to it over a dozen times and won every time (including against Colm), so I guess in OTB play you should only defend it as a last resort.

It seems you can't keep a sufficiently corrupt man down. Kirsan for President for Life?

It doesn't matter what colour square the pawn is on - the pawn will always be lost in the long run. The ending is a theoretical draw but very difficult and has been lost by many strong GMs

Fair enough I didn't realize. I thought if he was on a black square and was defended by the king and rook that he couldn't get killed, because the bishop cannot attack it obviously, but I guess the king can be pushed away etc. Anyway it did look complicated alright and also Mark had 3 minutes to the other guys half an hour at one point.

Zambia next up; looks like a 2400, 2300, 2200 and 2100. Should be winnable.

Uruguay for the women; 2100, 1900, 1700, 1700 and 1650. Tough game, but may be able to get a draw.

Karina and Alex L sitting this one out.

Going by Yreval's post earlier, this means Karina is guaranteed the WFM if she plays tomorrow.

Nothing happening yet as far as I can see but Collins can now take a pawn with a clear conscience?

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Sorry maybe not, I think it might just precipitate a massacre of all four pawn on that side of the board...

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

    He took it anyway.

Rc8 leaves him dead level there...

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

True but i wonder how it works out now. Maybe rook to c4 then queen and then rook take a pawn each but would leave Collins ahead?

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Sorry I forgot it wasnt his move, still looks like all pawns will go on that side.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

It's looking very, very drawish. I'd say at club level, most players would stop here.

But maybe Sam will relish yet more endgame practice!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Carlsen has sacced two pawns as black against Saric in his game. Could be an interesting tie there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

So already that looks very even which is true also of Baburin. Daly is defending an unbelieveably isolated pawn but he is now pushing back his opponents pieces, first the queen and maybe a bishop if he wants to? Heidenfeld is entertaining himself with some mesmerising rook pawn stuff but he is clearly calling the shots though in that game. Given a chance I wonder will he go rook to d4 and complete the piledriver?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Queens off now in Collins' game. Even more drawish. Opposite coloured bishops, f, g and h pawns each and just a rook to make it interesting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Absolutely, so it could be drawn on the top two boards then maybe.

Baburin's level, not drawn. 15 moves in against an opponent 200 points lower-rated than him. Give him time.

I hope Sam doesn't forget and move his rook off that file...

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

I suppose you are right about Baburin but he is inclined to offer a draw anyway a bit earlyish?

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

    Can't see it here tbh.

    Sam has agreed a draw.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

So Collins agreed the draw, pretty inevitaible, while Colm could squeeze the space out of his opponents white square bishop if he wanted to. If he decides on that he will have bucketfulls of space to create something maybe.

If Heidenfeld goes rook to c1 does he get the pawn on c7?

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

He didnt do that but he is in charge here. Will he go rook to d5 and then the queen takes the pawn on a6?

Baburin has a great position assuming he doesn't get mated he will have a nice pull in nearly every position.

Computer likes Mark's position but it will be extremely difficult to win due to blacks b3 pawn and Mark's open king.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

I agree I think Mark's opponent is hoping for something like a perpetual out there but if he doesn't get it he will surely lose.

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Does Baburin's opponent have a kind of perpetual if he keeps checking and maybe Baburin will want to repeat his moves? I think Mark will just pull his queen back to defend the pawn and then coast forward with his passed pawn maybe. Colm is looking great with two lovely bishops and total control of the centre.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Sorry thats not going to work for Babburins opponent. I dunno I guess it takes a grandmaster to see the advantage in his position because I dont think it looks that good?

Big swing for Mark the last couple of moves. Opponent gone wrong?

c3 less of an issue now, and the a-pawn could get legs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Now he pushes his rook to c7 preparing another step for the pawn?

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

I think Heidenfeld and Daly to win with Baburin to draw although I know most others around here reckon he should win. Daly is really suffocating his opponent and Im sure he will work out a pawn attack soon enough.

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Thats a good move by Mark, with the queen on that spot, having retaken the pawn, he is defending his own pawn and setting up stuff on g7 when his rook goes to the 7th rank.

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Daly has taken charge of the open file in a cramped position, for his opponent anyway, he will surely win and presumably Baburin can take up a pawn now.

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Baburin is in the wars, his opponent took advantage of his weird king and threatened mate so his moves were forced.

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

So looks like Baburin will lose and maybe Daly will draw so it will be a drawn match maybe.

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭macelligott

I hope Colm Daly doesn't do anything mad like he did in the R+p ending in the last round of the Irish Championships against David Fitzsimons. Just accept it's a draw!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Poormina takes a draw by perpetual in a position where the computer gives her +3.5! She must have missed Nf6 (instead of Nd6), stopping the mate?

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Baburin is playing on although he is facing two passed interconnected pawns. I was sure he could have taken one of those pawns at one point, I'd say he is regretting it now!
