I don't know to be honest you will need to ask these stat guys on here. Well Baburin has a bad knight and Colm's opponent is getting behind Colm's adavanced pawns in a dangerous way but nothing much else happening.

Daly looks in a bit of trouble alright. Hopefully he can get out of it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Yes Colm looks to be in potential trouble because his opponent looks like opening up both flanks now. Meanwhile Baburin still looks to have a dead piece and we are doing even enough on the other two boards.

Its early days yet, if we get a win today do we finish above our seeding?
Very hard to say, for the same reason as it's hard to call where you'll finish by winning your final round game in Bunratty, say.

After round 10, we were placed 76th and seeded 62nd in the Open. So if we don't win, we certainly don't beat our seeding.

In the women's tournament, we're 95th and seeded 89th, so pretty much bang on there.

    Colm's king surely can't last long on a3! :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Unfortunately we might very well lose, Colm is now defending for his life here.

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

And Baburin's queen looks semi trapped, we could lose both those games...

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Absolutely it looks really hairy out there. I wonder will he try and bring his knight back to shore up things? But I guess it might arrive too late...

I wonder will Baburins opponent play something like c5, the idea being to threaten to trap the queen and in the process open up the pawns around the king? And it looks dangerous?

Its amazing that Colm's opponent let him get in that rook move? If his opponent could have moved down the pawn earlier it would have been better?

I have hope that Colm can defend this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Colm's opponent is taking his time with this attack and letting our man back into things...

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

    Its possible...

Poormina goes from a level position and walks straight into mate in 3!

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Baburin looks in more trouble, three of his pieces are pretty hopelessly locked in a corner while a first class attack on both his king and queen is building up slowly. His opponent now has even got both his rooks mobilised to join that attack as well as both bishops and a knight.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,166 Mod ✭✭✭✭L1m1tless

ouch, perhaps she just lost concentration for a moment. I would have thought someone of her skill would have seen that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

If Colm gets that knight back to defend then I would say he is in the lead. Will he go knight to f5 maybe?

Nf5 or Rg1 are the 2 top computer moves

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

I think Baburin's want to get a proper escape spot for his queen there with that move, if the queen is pressed she might now go to c8 rather than the dodgier b7 but it still looks like his facing a huge assault here.

King to f5? I suppose rook to g1 is to try and trap the bishop and looks interesting alright.

    Knight I meant

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,166 Mod ✭✭✭✭L1m1tless

Daly is out of trouble. Good man!

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

The knight is well in the fray now so we can say officially that the attack on Colm's king is pretty much over now, a houdini thing or what! But I think it was his opponent that let it slip a bit..

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,166 Mod ✭✭✭✭L1m1tless

he may go on to win it now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Collins is facing two bishops which do look dangerous alright but he certainly has the better pawn structure. I don't think Baburin will hold on while Colm might be a bit ahead now and Lopez about even.

I wonder would Baburin take the knight now? He would gain a knight and a rook for the queen and a pawn which is not too bad and might stabilise things out there a bit?

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

If Baburin can shift his king back towards the other side can he escape yet?

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

I'll bet Colm will be day dreaming about f5 and then f6...

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

No he has gone the other side with the pawns,, preferring to keep the opposing queen bottled up for a while longer.

    http://www.orwellianireland.com

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Baburin is swapping/sacrificing his pointless pieces to get some play with the remaining ones. Might as well.

Daly got in his pawn attack so with the queen well placed and the rook to come later its a lethal attack. Colm should win now.

Nice. Colm has the win now!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,266 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Not the first time he's wangled victory from the jaws of defeat this tournament I think. Good shtuff!

China 1½-½ up against Poland; need just one more point to win their first ever Olympiad.

In their win, the Polish player ended up with more time than he'd started with.

Should get two draws, quite possibly a win and a draw, from the last two.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Thats a classy move for Daly to finish with, when the pawn takes the knight then it will be rook on the same line as the opponents king and queen in a couple of moves. So another good win for him there.

China now 2-1 up, with the remaining invincible Yangi Yu winning with -2.34... Looks like it's theirs! Great bunch of lads.

Diana has won; ends on 4½/9.

I see wiki says a WCM is for women who reach 2000 at any time. I thought there was something about getting a 50% score in the Olympiad as well though? There's certainly a few WCMs who are below 2000 that I could mention! Anyone able to clarify this?

The other teams are lucky China didn't bring their highest rated players ;-)
I believe there were a 2 or 3 2700+ rated players "rested" by the Chinese team !

There is a link on chess-results which give title results WCM etc

Seems Diana has WCM because she earlier had 3.5/7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭macelligott

Seems like Baburin was badly out of practice. Perhaps, preparing for his blindfold simultaneous exhibition distracted from Olympiad perpetration ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Lopez has lost in a swap his well placed knight but now he has a genuine attack on his opponents king? Should be interesting, he has his bishop, pawns, doubled up rooks and even his king out there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭brianhere

Yes Baburin didn't play too well I guess at times but still he was playing the best of the opposition so who really knows would anybody have been any better on board 1?

She's on the list anyway. Well done Diana! Two titles in the tournament. Even if the WCM seems a bit easy.

Oh his opponent's king is getting out of there in a hurry, wise man!

Lopez's opponent looks like weathering the storm a bit while Collins is beginning to roll with a rook and two knights, and soon a bishop, tormenting his opponent's king.

China win the last game - an interesting opposite coloured bishop ending - to win 3-1 and take the Olympiad outright.

Russia beat Bulgaria 2½-1½ to take the women's title.

Collins' opponent has dealt with that attack but now he looks very restricted but material is still even.
Lopez is now opening up stuff around his opponent's king so he might make progress yet.
