Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

VRT changes in 2012?

Just been speaking to a car dealer in the UK who has sold many cars for export to Ireland.

He said there's a big demand from buyers for cars registered from 2012 due to 'tax changes' in Ireland.

    Any ideas what this means?

I suspect he means 2010 and is referring to Motor Tax being lower

If you mean the co2 regime, was that not introduced in 2008?

    Changes happened in July 2008.

They happened in July 08, but cars registered between January and June could also be switched back to the new system if it was cheaper to do so.

Is there any advantage in buying a car registered from 2012 onwards then or is the sales consultant mistaken?

There is for the sales consultant, it will make him more money than a 2008-2011 car. As for you, no tax advantage

Only real advantages are lower mileage, better condition and maybe still under manufacturer's warranty (VW for example has a 3 year UK warranty but only 2 here... but NI isn't that far away!)

Oh and if you get a 2012 at least you'll get a proper plate rather than the 1x1/1x2 nonsense they brought in last year.

But no tax benefits over a 08, unless he meant that the newer ones are more efficient and thus lower CO2 than the earlier model and so possibly a cheaper band?

It might work like that in Joe Public's head, but in the real world it doesn't.

On my first ever day in the Motor Trade the first thing I was thought was that there's more money in sh1te than gold.

2012 regs do not get the long 120000 import regs, but then neither do 2011 regs either.

It might make a difference depending on the make and model car you are buying. For example a 2008 model could have higher co2 emissions than a revised version on sale in 2012. Lower co2 can mean cheaper VRT rate and motor tax. Of course this could be offset by the higher purchase price of the 2012 car.
