I expect many people who call themselves Muslims would have not bother. Just like I imagine many catholic competitors availed of the free condoms handed out at the olympics.

Unless this guy registered his complaint with the games organisers.

No, he contacted the Daily Telegraph.

We have two dogs at home and had a guy (who is muslim) stay in our house for a few weeks. He was from a small town in Oman so wouldnt be familiar with western customs. He was perfectly happy petting, walking and playing with our dogs and regularly had them on the couch asleep on top of him.

He did mention that in Oman dogs are not kept as pets and are considered dirty. I totally understand this as nearly all the dogs in Oman would be a street dogs and would be filthy and probably dangerous as its essentially a wild animal. He was shocked when he saw the treatment our dogs got. Wouldnt stop taking videos of the dogs following simple commands like "sit", "Paw" etc. He was shocked that we had such control over them.

He was an absolute gent of a guy and goes to show the importance of seeing other peoples culture before you go judge someone.

    So ridiculous...

I know plenty of MODERN Muslims, in Malaysia, that owned dogs...

This is just the few, at the ceremony, taking offence for the sake of it.

They should have dressed the dogs like ninjas to cater for the Muslims.

It's even less than that - nobody at the ceremony complained, as far as I know - it was two Malaysian Islamists trying to make a name for themselves.

I seriously doubt most muslims gave a damn about dogs at the Common Wealth games. Fecks sake, people seem determined to demonise all muslims because of the extremism of some muslims. I'm not sure if many muslims even watched the games, I know I didn't.

Well TBH these went to the paper, It's not one of them made up stories. If you go to the paper and go on about stupid things to do with your sky wizards/spaghetti monster people will call you up on it. Esp if it’s not even in your country, It’s just looking for offence. Most Muslims probably laugh at these lot just like the rest of us.

Or the paper went to them. This was published in the Torygraph on the same day Cameron announced the new proposals for fracking licences. The opening ceremony was last Wednesday, the paper published the story on Monday, thats some delay.

Some of my British friends put links up to this story and were up in arms about it, not one said anything about fracking, so I guess it worked. Muslims are a very, very easy target in the UK if another story needs to be hidden.

It was the Malay Mail [comments are worth a look] that broke the story, as far as I know, following a text message from Mr Outraged.

I get the impression from their story that he called the Telegraph, not the other way around.

Regardless, he has his five minutes of West-baiting.

I wonder if there will ever arise a non-PC culture where people will simply tell deeply offended Moslems and the followers of all other archaic beliefs to simply f**k off and stop being a pain in the ass?

Nope as you will never find "Religions" on the list of inciting hate crimes. Any people mouthing off Religious views regardless of Religion that is designed to incite hatred should be done for it under the law. If you standing on the street spouting hate, That's incitement to hatred. Not everyone believes in your particular brand of sky wizards, And what he may have said thousands of years ago.

    In Europe and America,
there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Islamists
The Imam said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Muslims love their children too

I never knew dogs were considered unclean by Muslims at all :-\ in fact I thought they were important with breeds like the Saluki.
    Wibbs wrote: »
Exactly. Even though dogs are considered "unclean", even very devout Muslims are allowed by their religion to keep dogs for protection and hunting IIRC. While cats have been seen as both gods and devils at various times in various cultures, dogs being seen as unclean is well odd in human culture. I can't think of another that thinks like that. We wouldn't be where we are as a species without them.

Most Muslims are like most Christians, pretty a la carte about much of their religions tenets.

Took a quick wiki/google of it and it seems there is basically a lot of argument and none of the anti-dog stuff is from the Qu'an itself but from the ḥadīths and even then it doesn't seem like whats being described at the commonwealth ceremony would be considered offensive to even a hardcore fundamentalist Muslim as the dogs are presumably being handled and kept by non-Islamic People of the Book and the Islamic athletes are not in direct contact with them particularly not their saliva.
I'm sure some one with actual knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence could correct me (but this is AH so they probably won't and I can rest assured that my 5 minutes of research will make me seem like an intellectual :P )

Yeah in seriousness I think it came from when dogs maybe were hanging around eating rubbish and actually being unclean. There's no basis for a lot of the dog hatred except some hadiths at most

    Really?

In a thread about two right wing Malaysian politicians getting the hump about a short legged dog named Jock who needed to be carried because he was bolloxed while in the same stadium as some people who happen to be Muslims and could possibly have been offended by the terriers presence?

Somehow Nodin decides to also be offended?

You're asking ME about the level of discussion? In some kind of incredulous or perhaps offended tone?

Jesus. Sorry....eh....Jeepers. How's that? Wouldn't want to cause any more misplaced umbrage.

I'm off to have a bacon sandwich, let the dog lick the frying pan afterwards, then I'll probably have a crap sometime later and wipe my arse with the correct hand in case I shake hands with any Muslims and after watching some Billy Connolly on YouTube. Don't worry though.... The rashers won't be offered to any Muslims, Jews or Jehovah's Witnesses, I'll keep the volume down on Billy in case delicate souls overhear his crude humour, I won't laugh out loud and I'll wash my face after kissing the dog goodnight.

I'll punt an oul prayer out there too and ask for forgiveness, as it'll make me feel good for no valid reason.

    Yeah. Really.

There's a complete difference between being offending due to sensibilities, and being disappointed due to discourse.

Having said that, I am not sure one should be surprised at the level of discourse provided herein.

My issues with PC, especially religious PC, is there seems to be a recent detachment between being sensitive and being respectful. To remain secular, the respect has to be mutual. This is something religion , rife with it's ideas of entitlement, has been woefully inadequate at since it's inception. I really do not expect any sort of remedy, nor will I pretend there is one.

As far as sensitivity is concerned, I also find this varies to such a degree that there is no winning. Sure, give it a try. I do. Afterall, I have to share the world with everyone else, and I just do not have the energy to fight everyone. It seems to me that no one has maturity any more. I mean, you bring a dog to a pitch, say something off-colour about women or gays, etc, and the crowd piles on you. Sure, you probably deserve it. But the thing about it that bothers me is if you intend to parade about how you feel and what you think, that you should be prepared to hear someone else tell you to shove it. At which point, the proper response is to either tell them "Yor Ma" or "Fair enough". What bothers me is the crowd that comes crying to mother. This Malaysian crowd, the religious crowd, et al are no different. Stop being little babies, suck it up, respect yourself and others as much as you can, and don't go crying when someone tells you something you disagree with. That sort of behaviour is for children.

Tbh, if my religion forbade me from touching dogs and some goon handed me a dog, I'll tell him to jog on.

Its the second biggest religion in the world, it's not like its some tinpot religion confined to an island in the middle of the Pacific, not that hard to find out what animals are considered acceptable.

Nobody was handed a dog in this case. The person who picked up the dog of their own free will did not appear to be in anyway upset or under duress. They were holding the dog closely with a big smile on their face, I wouldn't even be like that holding a dog.
Its the second biggest religion in the world, it's not like its some tinpot religion confined to an island in the middle of the Pacific, not that hard to find out what animals are considered acceptable.
Its not just animals, they would have to trace every law going. I doubt people are aware of a fraction of the laws of their OWN religion, which some gob****e could say will cause offence.

I mentioned condoms being handed out at the olympics, the poor catholic competitors must have been holed up in their rooms shaking with fear & stress after that fucking ordeal.

Lads i can guarentee muslims are not offended by this nor did most of them even take notice. Nothing more than "get my name in the paper" attempt. Think of it as Nadia Forde saying everybody in Ireland is offended that Ireland didn't win the eurovision.

Ha "Respect my right to be offended" Love that kind of phrase, I'm sorry you have no right to be offended. Anyone using them kind of terms should be told to jog on. Offence can be personal, It can be a social idea, What offends me may not offend you. You cant complain about hurt feelings or ideals. And I love this day and ages entitlement to respect like it's some kind of gangster film.
