Every parking spot at the International Space Station is currently occupied
ATV-5 is notable as the European Space Agency’s last resupply mission to the ISS. The ATV, or Automated Transfer Vehicle, is a beastly spacecraft with a payload of up to 7,700 kilos (17,000 lbs) — about twice that of any other resupply spacecraft. It too lacks the ability to return to Earth, instead burning up in the atmosphere.

    ^^^^

They stuck a Camera on the ATV to film it burnup on reentry.

This Disposable Space Camera Will Record Its Own Destruction on Re-Entry

    ISS_Small.jpg

From Last night taken at 22.21. I was hoping for clearer skies.. this is as good as I could get from behind the clouds.
Had to process the image in attempt to bring it out from behind the cloud a little, hence quite a bit of noise in the photo.

The story for tonight is more cloud

    Fri Aug 15, 9:31 PM 5 min 57° 22 above W 11 above ESE

    Fri Aug 15, 11:06 PM 3 min 24° 11 above W 24 above SSW

MET eireann are saying... Mainly dry for the evening with clear spells.

I would love to know where these clear spells are, because like last night, it was complete cloud cover.
    Tonight

Many places dry for tonight too with clear spells persisting in the south and east, but becoming mostly cloudy overnight through western and northern areas with a little showery rain developing in coastal areas. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

Good pass . Barely a cloud in the sky tonight in the south east .

Can anyone tell me what satellite I am seeing. It seems to be high in the south . It is a bit dimmer than iss and slower .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,404 ✭✭✭✭vicwatson

    Clear in Rosslare currently

I just saw the second pass over West Cork. At 9 .31 there was too much cloud cover but the skies are clear now

You could try working out from the following list which one it was http://www.heavens-above.com/AllSats.aspx just set the date to 15/08/2014 and then select evening.

It could possibly be either Cosmos 1633 or Cosmos 1340.

Heavens Above.com is excellent for this kind of stuff, especially for working out Iridium Flares.

Tonights pass 1018pm. weather not so good though -This evening and tonight rain and drizzle will spread gradually southwards to all areas, followed overnight by clearer weather, with scattered showers. Lowest temperatures 10 to 12 degrees, with moderate to fresh westerly winds, veering west to northwest and remaining strong and gusty in northern areas.

I just randomly went out about 11:30, didn't expect the sky to be so clear and managed to see 2 satellites randomly in the 5-10 mins I was out there :D

After this, I decided to search for an App on my Android and a website to see what's in the sky above me. Found these the best for anyone else interested:

Android app (ISS Detector + Satellite Tracker) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.runar.issdetector&hl=en

Website for showing what satellites are directly above Ireland right now:
    http://www.n2yo.com/whatsup.php

They might be of some use to some other newbie like me :)

1 pass tonight starting at 2129,lasting just over 5 minutes. Starting in the west, ending in the south/south east. there should be some good clear spells for viewing.

The last visible sighting from the ISS for the next while coming up now at 2129. go out and have a look!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 938 ✭✭✭Ice Storm

I couldn't see it, even though the sky was pretty clear.

A little disappointing as it seems it won't be visible again for a while.

She will pass over Ireland many times , but there will always be times when she is NOT reflecting sunlight and therefore will NOT be visible .

It seems that there'll be some excellent passes between the 11th and 20th October this year. If there's a clear frosty evening it'll be spectacular.

Hopefully some good viewing opportunities tonight and the next few days. Times for Dublin tonight are 20:09 and 21:44 but the second one will be lower in the sky.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Just caught it there, waiting for the next pass now!

Nothing new, but it's cloudy again in North Co. Dublin. Who would have guessed.

Showers will largely die out or become very isolated this evening and early tonight, leaving the skies generally clear. Hopefully.

Just caught it myself. Luckily it's not too cloudy.

Yea, that was a good one, next ones to short.

5 min one tomorrow but may be a tad early/bright for it at 19.20 but one at 20.56 should be good, 2 and a half mins but fairly high at 40 degree.

    Quick question:

What does "10 above SW" mean in relation to the position of the ISS?

    Thanks

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,288 ✭✭✭mickmackey1

Well it simply means 10° above the southwestern horizon. If you hold your fist out at arms length against the sky, that's about 5°, so twice that.

I forgot to check whether the ISS would be lit by the sun on this pass. It might be visible in the far west of Ireland. Doh, I should have checked that first.
