Right that's me voted.... Looked like about 75% had voted at my station, just over an hour left. Reportedly some stations have closed because they have reached 100% turnout.

Official word is that no stations have closed and all will remain open until 10pm irrespective of turnout. Apparently it is possible to drop in postal votes to polling stations.

Sorry yes, I stand corrected... it was just a rumour doing the rounds.

The incumbent government generally dislikes high turnout so even makes it as difficult as possible for people IN Ireland to vote. In Germany ALL elections are held on Sundays to ensure maximum opportunity to vote. The missus thinks it's amazing that Ireland holds elections on working days mid week and actually she's right...it's insane and no sitting government will change it as it generally works against their chances or re-election.

My post is slightly off topic but relevant to your post. Worse than what you cite, the biggest insult offered to Irish voters in recent years was as follows:
At some referendum or other ( I can't recall what about, ) the government fixed election day to facilitate students voting. I think that subsequently on one occasion they actually spread voting over two days with similar facilitation in mind. So far so good. But then there was yet another referendum, and the government reverted to the old arrangement because students were expected to vote " the wrong way " in that particular poll, and therefore had to be discouraged from voting. So we now have a bigger democratic deficit than ever, with a situation where governments can and will fix polling day or days according to who they want or don't want to vote. It always amazes me that these abuses are generally not challenged.

Perhaps us Irish should be praying for a 'No' vote?

According to a few economists, Scotland would be a big competitor for multi-nationals etc.

I don't agree with this, competition is always a good thing.

Tell that to the Dublin taxi drivers !
A business needs a compeditive advantage, ours is our tax rates for FDI, the last thing we need is a country on our door step which could decide to match our offering, that's not good.

There are as many stupid people who agree with the proposition as do not agree with it, and there are as many experts in the same position. They cancel each other out.

    Sadly, it appears not.

Both BBC and Sky saying most exit poles are NO vote. They're saying Downing St are happy with the feedback so far.

The undecided voters seem to have swung it

Ruth Davidson on BBC Scotland said that initial tallies coming in from counting centres are positive for the no side. Still very very early and of course as she is leader of the Scottish Conservatives this should be taken with a pinch of salt. Plus I think initial tallies are for postal votes

Given how aggressive and nasty some of the Yes campaign has been, if a No vote has been achieved, political and media figures will need to invest in personal security for the next couple of weeks/months.

It's not so much a prediction (as in they aren't making a prediction for an overall result) as a starting point for making comparisons as results come in from various constituencies during the night.

I believe it only takes a handful of angry, bitter people who see the "other side" as traitors to create a tragedy. I don't think there will be strife on the streets, but were I a prominent media or political figure on the Yes side I'd be investing in personal security until tempers cooled.

I am very interested to see if we get a break down of the votes. I'd love to see exactly how the 16-18 group voted.

Probably slightly 'No', but few enough registered (109,000).

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

If it is No, it's disappointing.

Still the Yes campaign deserves huge respect and plaudits for a great campaign against the establishment, the MSM and other vested interests.

If it's No, they should dust themselves down and come back again in a few years. In the meantime they should ensure the promises of more devolution are delivered and build on those extra powers to cement further devolution that will ultimately lead to Independence.
