    Hi everyone,

So a group of us are hoping to go camping soon. We will be in a small town called Murphy's for a day and that weekend we are all hoping to camp somewhere between Murphy's and San Francisco.

Does anyone know of a good camp ground in that area? We are hoping to be near water so we could do water sports etc.

    Thanks!!

Well if you look at the map there's a lake called Lake Melones about 5 miles from murphys with camping and a marina etc.

I dont know anything about it though. Looks kind of bleak and in the summer heat it could be tough. Remember camping in extreme heat can be dangerous, no fun being in a tent if its over about 22 at night.

Your only a couple of hours away from the bay area too so I wouldnt count on camping any closer.

You'll be only a few hours south of Lake Tahoe, I'd go on there. Not back towards the bay area.

Its on the border with Nevada, half the town is in Nevada with all the casinos and bars and high rise hotels and the other half of the town is in California with low buildings, motels etc. Its a unique place and somewhere you should visit if you're in the Bay Area anyway. Spectacular drive too into the mountains. Its a major ski area in the winter. They may even have had the winter olympics there in the past? Not sure about that.

The area is stunning. Really beautiful. I dont know about campgrounds but there must be many. Certainly water activities. There's miles of beaches. Fresh water beaches.

Sister in law used to have a house there so we went a lot. It'll take you a few hours on small roads from murphys but there's an easy fast road back to the bay area from tahoe.

I'd also go with Lake Tahoe for camping. The scenery is amazing.

If you head to the South Shore you'll be close to South Lake Tahoe, where the casinos and nightlife are.

This is a really nice place for camping on the South Shore - http://www.camprichardson.com/

There are plenty of private and state/federal campgrounds in the area, but the only one I've been to is Camp Richardson, so I can't comment on the others.

The nice thing about Tahoe in the summer is that night time temperatures can drop under 10C, which is great sleeping weather.

+3. For Tahoe. The area around Murphy is a little rustic. Tahoe gives you the best of both worlds, it's beautigul and cooler up there.
We're having weird weather in CA this year, drought is everywhere and its way more humid than normal as we are getting affected by the southwest monsoon. Tahoe is a safer and cooler bet, and fun to boot
