Increase in appetite

Our Kerry Blue Terrier, is nearly 11 yrs old. She has slowed down an awful lot in the last year, due to arthritis, walking at most just over a mile maybe 5 times a week (if she doesn't want to go for a walk, she will hunch down on the ground, and there's no moving her). She's on anti-inflamatory metacam once a day, for the past nine months or so. In the last couple of months we've noticed she's had a big increase in appetite. She would rarely clean her bowl before, but now when she's fed morning and evening, every scrap is gone from her bowl. She get's treats during the day, and would always bum when we are eating, and would literally eat anything :o She's recently trying to raid the bin too, which she would never do before. She's wormed regularaly.

Is this unusual for an older dog?

Not as such really, no. But it can be indicative of a number of health problems, many of which are age-related.
Has she had a full blood panel done in the past few months? If not, that's your first port of call and a vital step.

Thanks DBB, she had bloods done about 4 months ago, she has a lot of lumps on her, but thankfully they are not sinister. I guess we should talk to the vet again, and tell him about the increase in appetite.

I have seen this years ago with an old dog we had It turned out he was just in the very early stages of diabetes as all his bloods were clear about 3 months previous

not saying for a minute that this is the issue in your dogs case vets are the people to diagnose such issues

its usually a severe thirst and maybe a few piddles around the house that we would not usually find

hope its nothing more than just an old age fad that some of them seem to develop

Thanks jimf, will bring her for a full check-up. She's drinking more water lately too, but we were putting it down to the warm weather. It could all be related. Thanks again for the advice.

no bother at all that's what boards is all about we can share our experiences and maybe point somebody in the right direction

shes at the age now where she will most likely start to develop her little age related ailments

    hopefully its nothing too serious
