there is no value any more in gpu's as before you would get a new card that is several generations newer and be double the speed for the same price now whereas you now get this

quick one lads - where would i get a cheap cheap temporary cpu cooler for my 8600k? Was transferring from one case to another last night and spent hours fighting with the dark rock 3 cooler. then just gave up as it wasn't cooperating and the little c spacers weren't cooperating and just couldn't get a secure fit.

Decided i'd get something temporary to get me through til next week while I order something decent. Naturally don't want to power on the pc without a cooler :P

Any bricks n mortar stores carry anything? Or has anyone a stock intel cooler that might do the trick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,307 ✭✭✭Xenoronin

Stock cooler would work, I'm sure someone in Dublin would have one on adverts, or someone here has one lying around collecting dust.

Would old Intel stock coolers from previous socket boards (X58) fit as if so I think I might have some.

The X58 is LGA 1366, and only LGA 11XX coolers are interchangeable. So as far as I'm aware, it won't work.

I've a Noctua NH-U14S on the way, so should hopefully have it by Saturday.. will kill me inside thought having a half assembled PC sitting in the living room!! [girlfriend will kill me] :P

Thanks lads! If anyone does find one of the LGA 11xx stock coolers in the mean time though, do let me know and i'll take it!

Is the Vega 56 a good buy at £350?

    https://www.overclockers.co.uk/powercolor-radeon-rx-vega-56-red-dragon-8gb-hbm2-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-193-pc.html

Also what do you think I'd get for a Gigabyte 290x?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

So what's the general consensus on the Noctua Chromax NF A14 PWM fans? Thinking of picking up a 3 pack to replace the standard case ones I currently have.

Possibly the best you can buy.

Pretty good value, and there's no better AMD cards anyway.
You can still get at least 130-180 for a 290x

    B-stock GA-X99M-Gaming 5 motherboard has revived my PC :)

Now the only question is, what to do with the old mobo?
Sell for cheap, or try to get it repaired first?

Is there any interest anymore in building off the x299 boards? Or is there any place that would buy or trade one for something else? I got one, but have no need for it, and no takers so far on the usual buy/sell/trade sites, so just wondering if it is something people would not really use for typical builds.

In the enthusiast world, x299 has been steam rolled by AMD and even without that, very few people buy that platform due to the cost.

Hmm with the 10% off ebay UK today, would you go for the Vega 56 for £360 delivered or a 1070ti/1080 from ebay for a similar price?

    I'd get the 1080.

    Debating between a 1080 or a Vega 64.

Throughout all the RTX2070 reviews during the week, I couldn't help but notice the Vega 64 was very close to the 1080 and 2070 in most tests (I was looking at 2560x1440 mostly).

If I thought the Vega 64 was that good, it would mean I could get a FreeSync monitor rather than GSync and potentially save a lot.

Well at that price the Vega 56 would be new (with 3 new release games), I can't imagine you're getting a 1080 for anything less than about £460 new?

Big problem with Vega 56 is that it needs a much beefier power supply as it eats up a lot more power.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,399 ✭✭✭xtal191

Yeah the 1080 is refurbished but slightly cheaper than the Vega 56 and the 1070 TI is the same price as the Vega. Kinda leaning towards the 56 cause I'll more than likely be getting a new 1440p monitor soon enough and freesync is a hell of lot cheaper.

    Undervolted Vega 56 is grand.
A full system shouldn't draw more than 400W

Aye, spoiler warning, the silicon is really thick this time around. Die lapping by -0.2mm shaved 13degreesC off the stock temps.

The 9th gen chips are soldered so heat dissipating should be better than 8th gen cpu's but I don't see 5.5 mhz overclocks happening as having 2 extra cores over the previous generation, will make hitting that mark much harder than the 6 core chips. My guess is somewhere around the 5.0-5.1 mark will be the norm.

Intel...struggling with 10nm...but AMD will wow us with 7nm next year....yeah right.

Upgraded an I5 4440 to an I7 4790 and now my system is acting a bit odd.
Playing Doom the other night, it crashed leaving a red screen and loud static noise.
Did a hard reset and all seemed fine
Powered on this evening and there was flickers across the screen.

Do I need to keep an eye out for a new PSU ? or could it be a cooler issue ?
There is a 500watt powering everything at the moment.
    Cooler is a 120mm AIO
GPU is an rx480 8gb on factory settings

Let's wait and see. A couple of years ago Ryzen would have seemed like wishful thinking too.

AMD and Intel are in completely different market positions at the moment. I could see AMD being willing to accept tradeoffs that Intel can't.

Intel's crown means they have to prioritize reliability or suffer reputational damage - high failure rates and chip infant mortality problems aren't really an option for them.

In contrast, AMD can skate a lot closer to the wire since they've less to lose (and what would be a failure for Intel would still be a gain for them).

Its TSMC's 7nm, not AMD's. And its up and producing chips in volume. Because of the mobile market, Intel has lost the process node lead they held for years. And 10nm was meant to go live this year, not some time in 2019.

That's a pretty significant problem for Intel.

    Idling at 38/40 Degrees.

Is it more likely to be an overheating issue ?

Can't tell without having a result from CPU under stress.

Mobile chips are small and the yield is great, AMD have to produce big chips, multi-core monsters. AMD's brute force through core count approach to Ryzen may not scale down so well, and whatever GPU chips they order may have yield problems too. I think al lot of the problems we are having at the moment are due to the simple fact its getting harder and harder to increase complexity, reduce costs and decrease process size. Its physics and AMD are no more immune to the issues than intel, TSMC have no magic sauce to improve yield, and I am sure AMD customers will not accept increase in cost to balance that.

AMD makes very small chips, 44mm2 I believe. Zen+ might be smaller. That was the main point of Zeplin, make small power efficient 4 cores and put them on a interposer.

In comparison to the 9900k, at 355.52mm.

    This ^^^.

    https://www.techpowerup.com/235092/intel-says-amd-epyc-processors-glued-together-in-official-slide-deck

This stacking or "glueing" is what Intel tried to mock AMD over when the EPYC and RYZEN lines were launched until it turned out to be a really smart and efficient way of doing things. AMD can just stack modules togeather and could make a 2800X 12/24 chip with ease unlike Intel who has had a terrible time moving up to 6/12 and 8/16.

One thing to be aware of is you don't get enough of the coloured anti-vibration clips to do an entire fan in a particular colour as you only get 4 of each colour pieces per box which is a big crap considering the price.

Why would you want the same colour on both sides? One is going to be against the inside of the case. Just use one of the neutral colours on the inside like black or white.

Edit: I can see a point if you are mounting them on the heatsink

Easy to do. Look at the HW Monitoring in your BIOS settings and set them to PWM control. What mobo do you have again?

I was planning on using the black clips where the fans are screwed to the case and red clips facing into the chassis. But if you were really working on a design theme or using them as a cooler fan it would kinda suck. The Noctua round fan chromax replacements for their own coolers seem to come with 8 of each colour.

Not installed them yet as waiting on some fan dual fan header extensions to arrive. As Grahamer72 posted, its best to use the PWM fan curve settings in bios to control case and CPU fans but there could be a windows programme from you board manufacturer that would do a similar job.
