Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What resolution is your friend playing at? I'd assume 1080p but good to be sure.

Yep 1080p. He personally wont be playing pubg. I just installed a few games from my own steam account to to see how the pc was running

It's the CPU that's the technical bottleneck, everything else is fine. Replace it with an i7-4770 or i7-4790 (or equivalent Xeon if supported) and you'll be fine for the more intensive games, especially games like Battlefield which love cores/threads.

PUBG is terribly optimised though, and not overly CPU heavy and an i5 should be OK, so in that particular case he may just have the settings too high in-game. I'd say an RX480 would be at best able to manage medium settings if you want a rock stable 60fps.

The 480 is the reason I bought it for him to be honest. 1080p 60 fps at decreasing graphics qualities for the next few years at least. Other than that the option to upgrade to an i7 down the road is always there.

In the mean time, I'm hoping the 4460 doesn't need to be replaced for about a year? And by then maybe the i7's will be a bit cheaper.

I don't think the systems are comparable to be honest? An over clockable i5 with a slightly higher base frequency and a GPU that stomps the 480 in every way.

Yes as I said, PUBG is not very CPU bound, so in that particular case it is the RX480 is the weak point.

As for when you will need to upgrade the CPU? There's nothing the 4460 won't play; and some titles will run perfectly, while others will struggle, it really just depends on the game. You mentioned he likes shooters, so for example if he tried playing the new Battlefield online - it would run, but the framerate would be all over the place.

However, most single player games, e-sports games (Overwatch, as well as COD, etc), and the majority of RTS games, would still run very well on the i5-4460.

For RTS games, a 30fps lock, or a varying framerate from 25-60, is usually pretty easy to deal with but it can be very irritating trying to play an FPS with the framerate leaping from 30-60 all the time.

One solution to games where the i5 won't hold a stable 60fps and the stuttering is irritating, is to lock the framerate at a figure that will hold stable (eg 30fps, or whatever)...this will also allow you to ramp up the graphics settings as the GPU is no longer under strain to pump out as many frames.

An i7-4790 or 4770 at this point would cost about €150-160, the i5-4460 would probably get almost half of that back, so it's not a huge outlay and it would make a major difference in CPU intensive titles.

You can always adjust GPU settings to achieve the desired framerate (60fps or otherwise), but when you've got a CPU bottleneck, there is nothing you can do except introduce FPS caps.

Good advice, thanks! As I can't see him changing to anything new for a while Ill leave him with the 4460 and look in a few months to upgrade. Didn't think the 4460 would sell to be honest!

That is an insane games package, like if the card is even remotely priced well it'll sell.

Initially I was thinking of the Nvidia GTX -90 cards, and thinking it was a dual RX580 single PCB card!

Not sure about the card though, really depends on pricing. Just like the RX580 is a better RX480, this seems like just a decent improvement on the RX580 but how's it going to slot in against the Vega 56 and 1070.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

AMD are very quiet about it's release. I have been following the leaks the past month or two so I knew it was not a dual card.

It will be interesting alright to see how it fairs against the 56.

I doubt their will be much overclocking headroom as the cards I have seen are close to 1600MHz and one card has a 1600MHz turbo. I wonder would it perform better if they used GDDRX but I suppose that would bring the cost up.

I seen some comments online thinking $200(NOT A HOPE) I reckon it will be close to €300, could be more though considering the prices at the minute yes the crypto boom is over but cards are still keenly priced.

    Looks like a 2.5 slot card ?
Do they fit in it cases ?

Yeah it's 2.5 slot, but I expect other vendors will have 2-slot cards.
Most mini-ITX cases fit 2-slot cards max.

Yeah with the new RTX cards I'm wondering if I need to move to an m-atx case if newer cards are going to be 2.5 slot

I'd just invest in water cooling; the temperature drop from 2.5 slot cooler to 120mm AIO in my GTX 980 Ti was insane (30 or 35C!)

I'll be keeping my eye out for a Samsung SSD for black friday/cyber monday. Looking to upgrade to at least 500gb. Personal preference is Samsung with them having the better SSD's but what would be the next best options for an SSD be?

Videocardz reporting its MSRP at US$279

    Also it's using 12nm FinFet Polaris 30.

Officially a 12% boost in performance over RX 580; would be interesting if these just run cooler or if they can also OC heavily.

Went from a 1700X to a 9600K and much happier now with performance, the Ryzen was OK for average framerate but really under-performing in minimum frames. And the 9600K overclocks like a champ too.

I'm currently using an ageing GTX 970@1440p. Any thoughts on if it's a worthy upgrade? Cheers.

Any black fri prebuilt Desktops about? Just after a higher spec i3 with 4GB RAM, SSD + HDD. Maybe a GPU if it's going but not necessary.

I got a game pack with my new CPU - Black Ops 4, Evasion, Killing Floor 2 + some random Adobe software....don't suppose anyone is interested for say €25? It's still €50+ on the key sites for just BO4 so I'd say that's pretty fair! It might require some tomfoolery with me having to log into an account created by you temporarily to validate my hardware, hence why I'd prefer not to do it with random people via adverts.

Had to do the same with Assassins Creed Odyssey for someone here before as it needed to validate the RX card tried to the promo was installed. This step might not be needed at all in this case but just in case.

    Is it just for browsing/media?

Could build a barebones, really small but you can fit a lot inside.

Well I started having problems with my PC when I came back from town this evening. First the computer hanged at login screen and then hanged for a minute or two after logging in. Rebooted and that turned into black screen of death.

I thought my SSD was on the way out but after a good long while of trouble shooting it seems windows is corrupted or so I think anyway tried a lot of fixes. Safe boot black screen, windows startup fix finds nothing wrong. Internet points to re-install of windows which I done on a SSD I had lying around. At least my files are safe on old SSD so if there is a fix I find I can always re-install said SSD again.

The problem seems to have stemmed from the windows update I done yesterday or day before. I may also have got a silent update, who knows.

There's not much to it - check out the manual here:
    http://www.shuttle.eu/fileadmin/resources/download/docs/spec/barebones/NC02U3_e.pdf

All you do is remove 1 plate, plug in the the RAM, SSD & HDD (they only fit 1 way) and put the plate back on.

10 years old? Any chance there is a component that has been deemed “unsupported “ by windows all of a sudden? Happened me with an old gfx card in a family machine, suddenly was getting bsods and it turned out support for the old ati gfx had been dropped in an update.

I've ordered Like New stuff before and it means just that. The only thing is it probably depends on the person at Amazon who certified that. You should be ok though.
