It's worth giving the dell outlet (both UK and Irish) a call too, sometimes cracking deals on there.

I heard its better just call them before buying with dell. They throw some better prices.
899eu is good proce for spec, but I wonder which model it is. I read a lot about that gaming inspirion 15, its a good laptop for price, but screen is complete and utter garbage.

Perfectly I would want allienware 13, msi g40/43 14inch or that pcspecialist 14inch defiance 3. It would be pure couch and bed gaming device, so would love smaller size.

I will go monday to pcworld and have a look at 15inch laptops. Just to see size and weight.
If its okay, I might look in to hp omen, which actually really cracking laptop for the price.

You could get a Founder's Edition & Arctic Accelero Hybrid III 120/140 right now - around €800 + an hour's modding.

Sickened with Asus at the moment. Bought a cheap Asus RX480 8GB 'Dual' thinking "It's Asus, has to be half decent"....wrong. The card's cooler is the worst 3rd party I've ever experienced - under load it sounds like the reference R9 290 (remember those?).

What's worse....once it hits 65-67c, it hard locks up the computer. The only way it runs without crashing is to run fan at 80% manually and then it works just fine. But then it sounds like a tortured hoover. On automatic fan control, it locks up within a few minutes. The second it hits above 65c = hard lock up.

A painful lesson - never, ever buy any model card from any vendor, no matter how reputable, without googling. The second I googled "Asus RX480 Dual crash" I found tons of people with the exact same issue....hard system lock playing games.

I remember the 290 as I had a reference up until a few months ago. Man was I glad the jet engine sound was gone. I play with ear phones on during game play so never really noticed it but if I went to the kitchen and left the door open you can here it really loud. On standby though it is silent.

    I got mine in overclockers,

My first question was why is it so cheap :pac: he couldn't answer me.
I haven't had any locks, but its very noisey, I'm going to be getting a vega gpu. Tho I may try pick up 2 rx 480s crossfire apparently is really good according adored tv which seems quite good?

have you thought about underclocking it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

I've a Sapphire 290 and it's stupid loud. The PC is also silent when I'm not gaming, all you can hear are the hard drives.

Then the 290 hits 40 degrees, you'd hear it two rooms away.

I'd hate to have a reference model, god only knows how bad they are compared to this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,410 ✭✭✭Icyseanfitz

reinstalled my reference 7970 for giggles 2 days ago and that was a loud ass card, its like a plane taking off :D

Go to Argos, buy this, turn it on and leave it on your table beside your PC and you have a fully working AMD Radeon R9 290 Reference Simulator.
have you thought about underclocking it?

Yes, but it sickens me that the user has to apply all these workarounds just to get a functional card! I can't believe Asus would release a card like this. It's the noisiest third party card I've ever seen...heard.

Thankfully I have a spare R9 290 that I'm using which works just fine and isn't really even that far behind performance wise. Those cards have lasted amazingly well. I bought mine for €360 from Dabs in 2013....still running the latest games at 1080p ultra quite well.

Yep, that's the one. I actually only read reviews after you mentioned that and even people who say they usually couldn't give a crap about screen quality find it absoutely horrible. Was thinking about buying one but not anymore! Very short sighted of Dell. Save a few $ per laptop....and destroy the reputation of the entire range.

I noticed there that there was no audio coming out of two of my 5.1 speakers.
I had a look around and I'd changed it back to stereo.

It took me a while to figure out why (must've had this problem before and gave up).

Looking at my motherboard (ASRock z77 extreme 4), it has outputs for front, bass and rear audio, but 5.1 uses side audio.
Does that mean my mobo can only do surround through a digital cable and the jacks are just for quadrophonic?

Is there any way to trick the rear output into thinking it's a side output?

If I change it to 7.1 and test it, the rear speakers (the ones that weren't working) sound off, but the side speakers are duplicated on the front.

    Any idears?
It seems weird to me that something so lo-tech has no software workaround but I can't find anything online.

5.1 doesnt use side audio. in the original spec, the surround speakers were diagonally behind the listener, neither directly to the side or behind the listener. the speakers were quite commonly referred to as rears. in fact, even though it's been a while, i'm pretty sure the spec doc i had from dolby when doldby digital was the current standard referred to them as rears.

the jacks will work just fine for 5.1.

If you've speakers at 90 and 270* you've got things incorrectly setup.

    Motherboard's back panel:
    Z77%20Extreme4%20IO.jpg

The spec for them lists center/bass (orange), line in (blue), rear (black), front (green), mic (red).
There is no sides jack (so at any rate, I can't do 7.1, without the black optical cable).

When I go into my Realtek Audio manager thing, for 5.1 it lists the center, subwoofer and side speakers as options.

In the diagram if you click on a speaker it sends out a little tinkle.
The test works for all the speakers except for the side speakers, which are silent when I click them.

If I change the configuration to 7.1, clicking on the rear speakers produces the tinkle from the correct speakers. However, the side speakers are sent out of the front.

It looks like this for me:
    105170d1486578779t-realtek-high-definiton-audio-logitech-z-5500-a-soundman.jpg

The "rear" speakers are greyed out.
However, looking for this image on google I also found this:

    realtek51alc888.jpg
Note that their "sides" are greyed out and they can use rear.

So there must be some way to get it to change.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

That's weird... its the side speakers that should be greyed out, they were only added in the 7.1 specification  Try moving some of the cables around, the sound block may be wired up differently for your mobo and may have black supplying sides and the grey jack providing the rear.

The google image is useless as it references a completely different mobo from a different manufacturer and probably from a different hardware generation :o You sure you have the latest sound drivers for your specific mobo?

Normally if you unplug a jack and plug it back in it brings up a box with an option to select what speakers its assigned to.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,775 ✭✭✭✭Gbear

I unplugged everything several times last night but I just did it there again and now it works for some reason.

I didn't even get the option to reassign it. I just clicked on the popup that said "you've plugged in a jack" or something and it didn't seem to do anything.

    Oh well. :o

    Thanks.

Yeah, my trial ends in about two weeks...suffice it to say, I shall not be renewing it. Seems absolutely pointless in the RoI.

Just going back to the 850 Evo's, neither Amazon.co.uk, .de, .fr, .es, or .it would deliver them to Ireland (some 3rd party sellers did but I prefer buying direct). Following the advice here, I punched in my Parcel Wizard address...exact same result on ALL sites - "This Item Can't Be Delivered to the UK - Northern Ireland". Fook me, hardest damned thing I've ever tried to buy on Amazon. Pulled the trigger on the Komplett listed 500GB one in the end, seemed the best value* @ €185 plus delivery.

*ssd's have gone up dramatically in price over the last few months!

An posts parcel forwarding thing has an address outside london if you ever need an item like that again.

I would like to be able to cancel my trial and actually have it end right now so I can go ahead and order

Try using an posts service https://addresspal.anpost.ie/
They use a mainland UK delivery address

There's a glitch there. Been getting supersaver delivery on prime for months no bother. Sounds like Amazon themselves might have been out of stock but Marketplace lads had it.

Using Prime for a while now, got it for %50 off, worth it in my eyes. Every order is sent ExpressPost and reliably arrives on the day after dispatch between 9.45 and 10.15AM. Like clockwork. Supersaver delivery. Dispatch can be a few days depending on where stock is.

With AP being the way they are at the moment regarding mail from China I'd be much quicker to recommend Parcel Wizard than Address Pal.

I can't seem to create an account with PW.

I get to the phone verification phase, and I get the text, but the site throws an error, and email activation throws me back to the homepage, rather than a verification success page. Account remains inactive no matter what I do.

I'm finding with my Prime trial, that items are taking FOREVER in the pre-dispatch phases, and once dispatched, arrive the next day. Can't see any real difference to compared to Super Saver personally, though it is only a trial so maybe that's why

That delay is a necessary evil.

To send it express it comes from D17, so Amazon ship it from Bristol/Fife/wherever to Dublin, then its sent out. That dispatch time is really UK-IE transport.
