That would make quite some sense!

What CPU does the laptop have, how much RAM does it have, and how much storage?

It's an i5-7300HQ, 8GB and 128GB SSD/1TB HDD...also has a customisable LED steel series backlit keyboard if that your thing. Only played Overwatch on it so far, but 1080p ultra settings runs at a solid 60fps. :)

Well my desktop is out of action the past few days and I have had to use my laptop and phone. How I miss my desktop, I do not know how anyone can use a phone and laptop full time.

I am waiting on a CPU as my backup bios only works with the first gen CPU on my system and if that doesn't work I will have to pickup a pre flashed bios and desolder the old one off and resolder the new one on. I'm not too bothered as I'm fairly handy with a soldering iron it's just as a last resort but I would prefer not to go down that route due to risks involved.

Then that's some deal. I was leaning to the high-end side of things while I was talking about laptops being pricey.
They definitely have gotten better value over the last year, thanks to the advent of desktop-grade GPUs in laptops. Pascal is definitely something special.

Same. I've a fairly deep rooted disliking of laptops.

In my case, it'd be a laptop for light, everyday work tasks and desktops for gaming and all the heavy stuff.

Spent... more than I care to admit on a HP gaming laptop in 2006. Had a GeForce 7600 if I recall.... Awful choice, last less than a year. Bought a Lenovo Z575 in 2012. Still going. Decent wee job for playing games at 720p/30fps as well. Sometimes even hit 60.

We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

Amazon after bumping all their RAM prices up, pricks.

Thanks Graham. The issue with the flickering during gameplay only started when I upped the refresh rate. Only appeared on some games though.

    Will give that a look.

    That sort the problem?

That all sounds very familiar. :) I got a Dell XPS back around then with a Geforce 6800 go, cost near enough €2,800. I travelled a lot with work so it made sense at the time, I managed to get as 7800 MTM module on ebay and upgraded it, so all in got about 2 years out of it.

Flogged it for reasonable money and got a desktop with an 8800 instead first chance I got.

What was the worst CPU and GPU you've had the displeasure of owning?

OCUK now have stock of the RX580 8GB Red Devil....for £599.

    A card with a £269 RRP.

Forgive me for dragging up an old post, but Scan.co.uk are selling them for £255ish including postage as a Black Friday promotion, and I'm itching to pull the trigger.

Speaking of hard drives, I'll need to buy another 1TB 7.2K drive, as I'm nearly out of space.

Never *owned* a bad CPU, does owning a E5300 that wouldn't stay stable at 3.8GHz count? :p Had to work with some awful ones over the years though, especially the craptops we were stuck with this year... :(

GPU is e-z: GeForce MX440. Proof that nVidia were out to screw consumers and industry with anti-competitive bullcrap since the beginning of time rather than being a "new" phenomenon

Let me see... maybe the P4 (don't know what model).

As for the GPU, the Intel GMA 4500M.

They were of there time. Ran AutoCAD on a P4 just fine at the time. You have to keep inind that when these were released the requirements for processing power weren't there outside of specialised programs, and platter hard drive were very slow.

P4 was a misstep at the time, but it was sufficient for most people who used them. Core 2 came out of pentium 3 I think, and was major jump, but requirements jumped also. In 2008 I was running a very large model, that I split across three core 2 machines and it took nearly 5 days (24/7) to finish running. Frustrating when you realise from the results that there was something wrong and you had to run it again!

I think the worst CPU I owned in terms of it being an actual poor CPU rather than just being unsuitable for my needs, was one of the Pentium Ds. Significantly slower than the AMD X2's at the time, more expensive, and ran seriously hot. I also got a netbook a good few years ago with one of the AMD C-60 processors, I knew to expect very little from it, but it was beyond abysmal - barely capable of even browsing the web.

Don't think I've ever owned a truly bad GPU, maybe similar to one of the above, the Geforce 4 MX420 was definitely not a great one though and was very disappointing at the time I got it. But that must be what, 17 or 18 years ago? It would be rare for me to get caught out by a bad cpu/gpu since then. I don't think it's fair to include integrated graphics, as they simply are what they are and never claimed to be anything but :)

Looking to sell a PC I have. It has an SSD and a HDD, when I run "reset this PC" it'll delete my data off both drives, right?.

You will be given an options along the lines of "Keep my files" or "remove everything"

If remove everything then it will AFAIK then it will do a clean install on the drive the OS is installed on.

The other drive (non OS) will not be touched

I haven't tried recently, but does Win10 handle drive mounting any better than 7?

With 7, it would install the main OS partition on whatever drive you specify, but, if you had another drive plugged in ahead of it, not the bootloader.

So it would mean that you've have a your OS on a drive on port1, but you'd have to set your boot device to hdd1, because that's where it lived.

    The Pentium Ds were toasters.

Didn't the MX420 come out in 2002? You basically implied that it came out in 1999 or 2000. Back then, we had the likes of the GeForce 256. In your book, I'm an unfair person! :D
