I'd be for soldering the IHS. But you've got an interesting point.

Since I'll start getting my allowance soon, it might be a good opportunity to upgrade.

To those who doubt the Vega. Check out this video beating the 1080.

I always leaned towards the 1080 for its power efficiency.

The thing is the Vega 64 costs as much as a 1080ti, not a 1080. The ti blows it out of the water out of the box with air cooling. Probably miners screwing the prices but that's the reality. So you need to buy a Vega64 at 1080ti prices, stick a custom loop on it, do a fiddly under volt overclock and you get around 1080 performance while using around 100w more power? That's a failure and why people doubt it.

The pricing of the V64 is ridiculous. So have the prices of certain GPUs been this year.

This last year or two has really pissed me off. I know miners are to blame for it really, but it's incredibly frustrating. The value for money the last year or so has been the worst it's been in over a decade I'd say.

Only areas where GPU's have truly shone in an affordable sense is the GT1030/GTX1050/1050Ti (1050ti less so due to performance, but the fact a 4GB card that can run modern games at 1080p med/high @ 60fps just from the pci-e lane is amazing).

    Same with RAM.

The RAM prices have been something else this year.
What solutions to the GPU price problem do you have in mind?

Well said. One solution I had in mind was to shut off mining functionality on standard consumer cards like the GTX 1060, RX 580, etc., forcing miners to buy mining specialised cards.

It wouldn't make for good business however, selling cards for less than the market will pay for them!

It's been a mixed bag. Definitely big improvements on the cpu front but ram and gpu prices are cancelling it out. The 1050ti is the only value proposition. AMD is sorely missed in the entry level gpu segment with no competing product to the 1050ti. You can still build a pretty great 1080p gaming PC for around €500-600 though which is good as it's ever been.

Sipping power at around 150w full load as well on a Ryzen 1200 / 1050ti system.

Its just raw compute so nuking mining would probably kill video editing etc. Makes the cards pretty effin useless.

Locking down mining functionality on gaming cards would force users to have 2 GPUs in one machine if they want to game and mine on the same machine.

Insightful point you have there. I take my solution back, if I'm to believe what you said.

I'm happy enough with the performance of my PC even though it is old. As I also have a Xbox One X to game on. When I do upgrade I'm hoping RAM and GPU prices will have dropped down to reasonable prices. As it will be a Ryzen build I will be aiming for the best 16GB's I can get with tight timings just to eek out the most from Ryzen.

We've gotten great CPUs this year, but terrible GPU and RAM prices.

Vega is meant to be a beast with certain alt coins, so the miners don't care.

The 8GB of ram I purchased in September for ~£80 is now ~£110...
Was hoping to upgrade to 16GB in the new year. Guess not!

From my order page on amazon, October 2016:

    The same RAM now: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0134EW7G8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was about to comment on the Titan V. The Titan text on the upper section of the shroud brings me back to the day of the leaked photo of a Titan Volta card. Does anyone remember that?

Really sorry I didn't go for better vengeance and settled for the 1600. Looking to upgrade now not happening won't be paying extortionate prices!

Have you it overclocked? And what do you use the PC for? You should really wait it out and buy the Zen+ once they are release sometime next year March or April I think they will be out maybe even sooner depending on how ready the 12nm node is.

I haven't. Might do so in the new year just haven't had the need to OC yet. Use it for Music production.

The Titan V doesn't look spectacularly faster than the 1080 Ti in gaming. Probably to do with the GV100's FP32/FP64/Tensor-focused nature.

4k ultra at 144fps should be bare minimum for a card that price, what's the point of it?
