Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The BBC have a snapshot of the minorities of the Ninevah Plain, currently being obliterated by thugs.

but true. When Nineveh was at it's height the rest of the region and much of the known world beyond it was composed of primitives scrabbling for life and signs in the dirt.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Outstanding performance learning English.

Thanks. I was born in Ireland, however, to Irish parents. Themselves of Irish descent. That's as far back as I know. You're doing ..... Ok on the usage of English yourself.

Being obliterated by those who believe that Allah the almighty has sanctioned this and appointed them. Credit where credit is due.

We should give them refugee status.

They might give us that, one day.

Why, when there are safe countries closer to Iraq? A person would have to move through safe countries to get to Ireland.

What is going on in this thread? Is this not about the ISIS attacks on Christians in Iraq?
I'm sorry, but the standard of debate here is very poor. This is not about Israel and the Palestinians - there are plenty of threads on that issue.
I am also amazed how many Irosh people want to blame the US.
Just to be clear, it is a bunch of Sunni Muslim thugs who are doing this. They are beheading people and filming it on the mobile phones.
I hope the US protect us all from these weird vicious bastards. No one else will intervene. And yet the US will be slated.

Strange. I criticise hardline Islam all the time, yet support the Palestinians. That probably blows the "You're 100 per cent with us or else you're agin' us" crowd's minds.

nit picking there Nodin. I don't know why you bother. Yes, many are wahhabi but they are also a loose alliance of a number of factions, primarily drawn from disaffected Sunnis who lost power and influence after Saddams collapse.
My point remains - these are the knuts who we need to be focusing our anger at.

A colleague of mine has family directly involved. Seems there will be a way for them to move into exile in Turkey. That's the news he was getting today. He's an extremely pragmatic man. His family were ardent Saddam Hussein supporters. There was no tyranny against Christians. But he understood the invasion. It's refreshing to hear a perspective that isn't biased by cheap Western ideology. The fallout of a failed invasion has had devastating consequences.

Reading a lot of it I cannot help but think they are but another now almost nomadic people like Romani or the Jews until Israel.

It has turned into very violent tribal blood feuds as in eastern Europe there is a terrible power vacuum in the middle east. Only feeble dictators who attempt to rule under boot and cannot even do that.

I've seen some of the videos on YouTube and photos of what they are doing to Christians and moderate Muslims, anyone who defies them or stands up to them is beheaded in the most horrific way. They even beheaded a little Christian girl.

Then they display the heads in the town square and crucify the dead bodies. Just the most horrific middle age kind of stuff.

If they have one redeeming feature. Is that they've outlawed smoking.[B/]

So they're against sin. Well that's ok then, isn't it?

It needs to be contextualised: our unemployment rate, emigration of our own 20s generation, national debt, being screwed over by EU on retrospective bank bailout, enabling ethnic cleansing by accepting displaced persons etc. it serves no useful purpose to Irish society.

    What about humanity?
Should we just expect everyone else to do it?

Fascinating time on After Hours isnt it?

America the Great Satan on some threads, and Oh god when will America help those poor people in other threads.

Hamas must be cursing ISIS, just when muslims were getting some sympathy in the world we have images of christian children being beheaded by koran chanting fanatics.

The only option is to blame the whole thing on israel and the western media...

What can/should Ireland do about it?

    1) Do nothing.

    2) Wait for someone else to do something.

    3) Say nothing.

    4) When efforts fail, criticize those who tried.

    5) Say "I told you so."

    6) Blame George Bush

    7) Return to step 1)

In regards American intervention, well dammed if they do, dammed if they don't. They intervened in Libya, got slated and blamed for the mess that resulted...
Didn't intervene in Syria (Anti-war nutjobs were delighted), chemical weapons and 160,000 dead two years later, well blame America cause sure they have no oil...
ISIS gain control of Northern Iraq, start beheading Christians and non believers.. humming and hawing.. US launch air strikes and the anti-war nutjobs will be out on the streets condemning this intervention...

Isn't it great to be able to sit in a comfy chair in Dun Laoghaire pontificating about the wrongs of the world and getting paid by the tax payer to do it.

With the Arab Spring, I reckon Saddam would be fighting against the Shiite majority and going back to his old genocidal ways. Then you have ISIS advancing from Syria and recruiting any Sunni who opposed Saddam's secular regime. America would then back the Shiites like they do now, so the country would be in turmoil anyway.
