Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can anyone tell me if they are as bad as people say please?
I've found a clean A4 tdi with one but I've heard they're less than useless!

Here's a pick of the shifter.

    Thank you.

Cheers for that. The truth hurts sometimes I suppose. They're best avoided then would you say?

Unless it's a conventional auto or the newer DSG, avoid it. Multitronic is a CVT and it just isn't strong enough for the job.

Right so. Thanks for the heads up.
    Manual it is.

    Manual it is.

You haven't told is which it is: Multitronic or S-Tronic or Tiptronic ?

The former is awful, the latter two are great.

And if the seller can't tell you, get the VIN and go to an Audi dealer and check it out yourself

Multitronic is a money-pit of a box - they go like stink when working and then cack their internals, whereby you join the legions of other multitronic owners looking for the fabled "good used box", fail, and join the legions of butt-hurt multitronic owners who paid to have them rebuilt, or the ones that still have difficulty walking as they got theirs off an Audi main dealer.

Sorry, I should have said it was an 03 model. I'm pretty sure it's got the bogey one that everyone is talking about.
Damn shame, the car it's in has only done 40k genuine miles since new!

Huh, i've been wondering why even the larger Audi's seem to come in manuals.

Guess I know why now. :pac:

Right, time to resurrect this thread, can some kind soul please tell me if the auto box in an 03 Audi A6 1.8T petrol is the dreaded Multitronic gearbox please?
The owner doesn't know and just says it's a six speed auto if that helps?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Yes it would be multitronic.

They are a horrible gearbox even when working 100% IMO.

Dang, that's what I thought alright. I'll steer clear of it so. Thanks for your help.

The older Multitronic auto box is known to have a good few issues and isn't the nicest of boxes. The S-Tronic is a big improvement but didn't come on that model.

For A8 (2003-2011), I have it on good authority from a gearbox specialist that Multitronic transmission is poor and unreliable and costly to fix - also said that Quattro is the one to go for.

I suppose that that recommendation could also apply to A4 and A6 and perhaps other Audi models. Can't comment on DSG transmission.
