Where do you all go for your tack repairs? The girth straps on my saddle are starting to separate down the middle (not cracking, rather the front and back leather are separating from each other), so I need to get them re-sown or glued. Not sure if they need replacing as it's only one on each side.

I may also need to get the saddle restuffed so thinking about going to Berneys or Goodwins, but as priority I need to get the leathers sorted.

Can anyone recommend someone in Dublin/Wicklow? And what costs would I roughly be looking at?

The last time I needed the girth straps repaired on my saddle, I brought my saddle to Berneys. I actually got them to replace all 4 straps because one had ripped (i.e. from the one across to one side), and while the other 3 were ok, I thought it best to get them all replaced in one go. I think it cost about 50 quid, but I got them to check the whole saddle also, and they cleaned and treated it, too.

On a somewhat related thread, and without wanting to hijack your thread, can anyone give any recommendations as to someone who could add in an extension on a pair of leather riding boots so that they'll fit me around the calf. There's no zip in them. It'd also have to be a neat job as I need them for showing next summer. - I'm not all that fussy, honest, despite what the above sounds like! :o

Thanks convert. I just contacted Berneys there and they are giving me a quote of €100 to replace straps on both sides of the saddle. Not bad, but was hoping for less :)

Regarding your boots, I'm not sure - I heard there was a good place in Dun Laoghaire, but I can't remember the name!

I'm hopeless at the cost of what repairs should cost. I think I paid about 15 or 20 euro to have a cheek pieces and the throat lash repaired last February after the horse chewed made a toy out of it.

I'll try a quick google and see if I can find any results fro the place in Dun Laoighre.

I actually just contacted Goodwin's there and they will do it for €55. It suits me better too as they are based in Dublin so easier for me to get to. I may get it reflocked as I'm there, looking at €100 for that - is that reasonable?

This is the place I was talking about in Dun Laoghaire - Hughes Show & Leather Repair. Says they specialise in Equestrian Boots.

I've never used them myself but my friends have and give them great reviews.

I always use Berneys, but my tack was bought from there, so think it's as well to keep with them.

If you need something that will adjust the fit, arrange for George from Goodwins to come out to you (only George), it'll probably cost less than the 155 all in and you'll know the saddle isn't just stuffed full, it'll be reflocked to suit the horse

If it does need reflocking, it could be contributing to your wrong leg issue too :)

Will they do callouts for less than the quoted price? I was quoted €100 for a reflocking based on me dropping it in.

I thought that about the saddle potentially affecting her back! She is generally weaker on that side anyway so it may make a big difference overall!

George has done flock adjustments for free when I've needed it but my saddle is flocked with good quality cotton so shes just adding to it, if yours needed to be stripped and flocked from scratch it might be more but I've generally found her really really helpful and reasonable.

convert for your boots try cleggs or bill glennon in naas. Cleggs did a great job for me on boots that were too tall. They cut them down and re did the zips and it looks great you would never know they were altered.

Bill glennon is the tiny little shop up the top of the town (you wouldnt know it was there unless you looked for it). I havent been to him myself but have heard a load of people say he does a brilliant job on boots.

They were quoting me an additional €75 on top of the €100 for reflocking and €55 for girth straps for a call out. It may be that you have a good relationship with them and so the cost differs :) I was a totally new customer.

Anyway, we'll try the reflocking and see how it goes - the cotton has hardened up so Im hoping with a reflock it will remould itself to her new physique a little bit better.
