Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So if i want to replace the coolant on my 02 corolla(new shape) can anyone recommend a coolant? My haynes manual says any quality glycol ethanol coolant but I've read various places it's important that it's silicate free.

Approx 30 notes for genuine toyota coolant from dealer. Not a rip-off at all. :)

It says 5k miles or 6 months on my haynes manual #4791

    The oil was this stuff

http://www.intrexcarparts.ie/car_accesories/engine_oils/motul_engine_oils/full_synthetic/p489. It was that price after delivery.

    Thanks for that link.

5k or 6 months is way before the interval, the Haynes manual must have a misprint tbh.

The oil you posted above is the same spec as the oil I posted so nothing really between them only price :)

using this coolant in my own corolla. been near 3 months in there now and it seems fine. still a good colour (no corrosion etc). got it in the local top part, think it was around €15 for the gallon. silicate free :)

I'd agree with John €55 is very expensive for oil. i got a gallon of mobil 10w40 semi synthetic in halfords for €35 which is suitable for the corolla, even tescos do castrol edge for €40.

i'd also echo that 7k miles is a nice time to do oil changes, or twice yearly if you cover less than the 7k. if your corolla is anything like mine, you can still see very clearly when you dip it if the oil is a good colour or if it is getting worn out. my oil has been in around 4k miles now and it is still very clear.

When your indicator light is flicking really fast on and off, does that just mean it needs the bulb replacing or is there a deeper electrical issue?

^ Thanks! And since the spirit of the thread is stupid questions, I have another one:

My tyre pressure seems to always be at the 30 mark, give or take 2 up or down. I check monthly but it always seems the same, I dont do massive mileage monthly but drive it a good bit around town so it gets a fair whack of speed bumps, the odd bad kerb and stoney roads, I would have thought the pressure would go down a bit more than that every month?

Depends. Some cars have bulb holders with no wires and it may just be a bad connection. Peugeot front indicators are prone to this.

Some alloys/tyres are just really tight and won't let much air out. Keep checking monthly though in case things change.

Heres one for you, I've been doing an awful lot of brakes in work lately, and noticed there's a very fishy smell off the new pads, whats the story there?? Isi the oil on the back of them or what?

Cleaning a MAF. What to use?

Electrical contact cleaner? Or something specialised?

I've used contact cleaner before, I think it is the specialised :pac:. Don't physically touch the wires though. Just blast them with the spray.

    ...or similar. :)

Brake cleaner out of a plastic spray bottle is what I was taught to use. Less harsh than the high pressure carburettor cleaner out of cans.

So I've read somewhere that in relation to the corolla 1.4vvti

"when servicing make sure to drop and clean the sump and the gauze as it gets gunky and can lead to the car starving on oil but it's ok when cleaned every few services"

Is this something that should be done?

personally i would say no. i've had numerous 1.4/ 1.5/ 1.6 vvti cars and never done this (nor have i heard it mentioned before this thread) and it's always been ok.

my current car, although i've only owned it around 4 months, has 150k miles on it's 1.4 vvti and it's going great. with the rocker cover off it looks like there is no problem with oil supply (or lack of) to the head.

now, if you had a saab on the other hand :pac:

I dropped the sump in mine at 110k miles, The gauze was free of any sludge or dirt as was the rest of the sump. Just for the sake of it while I was in there I removed the gauze and cleaned it but it was a pointless exercise tbh because nothing came out of it.

I have 166k miles on my 1.6 avensis and never had that gauze cleaned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

If I was selling one with high mileage and was unsure of the history I'd definitely drop the sump. If the oil light takes longer than usual to go out after an oil change I'd do it too. It is not a common problem but it does happen. Regular servicing is the best way to prevent it though.

If you change brake caliper should you bleed all the brakes afterwards or just that one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,855 ✭✭✭nd

Any one have an idea of what is causing the humming in the background here?

If you clamp hose and can be sure no air gets drawn in to brake pipes then you can get away with just bleading one caliper.

But its ideal opportunity to renew the brake fluid, and bleed all 4 corners

Personally I do all 4 as even a small amount air can make the brakes feel spongy

So should be ok for a corolla? I know it's pretty much the same price as Toyota official coolant but halfords are easier to get to.

    should be fine :)

always nice to do the thermostat when doing a coolant change i think. you have the pipes off anyway if you are flushing/ rinsing and a thermostat is only around a fiver. not essential by any means but a nice way to complete the job.

I think one of the clips on the air filter housing is not on properly. If theres air getting in there, it would give that type of noise too.

Nope def not a fan. From googling I suspect it's the idle air control valve.

Looking to get some axle stands but one of the cars has a thin metal seam along the underside which looks like it will deform if put on a stand.

The standard jack has a cut out for it when jacking it that way.

What do I need to do to not damage the seam?

Look in the owners manual and find out where the jacking points are in your car.

Get a piece of wood or something similar to what joujoujou has above and cut out a grove similar to that of the jack and place it securely on the Axel stand. Then Put the Axel stand under a jacking point.

Personally I'd choose blocks over Axel stands though.

I'm going to replacing the fan belt on my car soon and plan on changing the water pump on it as well. It's a 2004 Ford Focus 1.8 tdci estate. Looking at the Haynes manual for it, it mentions the water pump on both the timing belt and the fan belt. Can anyone tell me which one it's actually on?
