Consulting - How does VAT work?

    Hey guys,
    Just wondering if anyone could give me a steer. I'm hoping to start consulting on a part-time basis and I'm just wondering how VAT works?
    My first client will be paying Ex Vat every month - can anyone give me an idea of what process I need to follow here?

    Discuss with your accountant.

    If your sales go over a certain threshold then you must register for VAT. If your sales are below the threshold you may optionally register.

    If you are not registered for VAT then you do not charge vat. If you ARE registered for VAT then you do charge.
