unfortunately on consoles they don't seem to be any cheaper(most times more expensive) than buying the actual game somewhere like on Amazon.

Any digital download I purchased for the PS4 has been the same or less than Amazon. The few minutes it took to setup a US PSN account was more than worth it.

Did you use an address(state) with no sales tax?

I know, but 21% on top of all the actual expense is A LOT. People are a bit deluded if they think that Gamestop makes that much of money from second hand sales.

On the other hand, it would be interesting to see how Gamestop doing when they started selling all next gen games at 70eu+ point. What is the actual RRP prices for Ireland? I know that in US they were selling games for 60$ and they still sell next gen stuff for 60$...

VAT is actually 23% in Ireland the last few years. Also I assume VAT is paid on the profit they make on the game and not the price they sell the second hand game at. So if someone sold it for €30 to Gamestop and they sold it on for €50, VAT would only be liable on the €20 profit. This method is used by car dealers so I assume it is the same for this.

Oregon has no sales tax, thats why your getting it so cheap.

Tis a loophole that can have no real comparison to prices here which include tax. For it to be an effective comparison you would need to take VAT off the price here for comparison.

For example a game that €60 here,€13.80 of that is tax. Leaving the "cost" of the game at €46.20.

So yeah, can blame the government as well as gamestop:)

EDIT: Just did a quick currency conversion there,€46.20 works out at $61.82. So we actually are paying a similar price to the yanks. Its just tax over here kills us:(

I'm well aware that they have no sales tax. That's why I chose them when setting up the account.

The point I'm making here is that I can purchase the games while here in Ireland. You don't have to be in Oregon to buy them or even use a real address. It is a perfectly valid alternative to the rip off that is GameStop

If you're going to use maths, use it right.
Your example is based on the fact that Gamestop give zero Cash, zero store credit or zero money off on another game.
It's also assuming a title is still going to €50 second hand one year later which is an Absolute minority.

    Game costs:
Player 1 buys game at €60 (current Gamestop take = €60)
Player 1 trades it in: Gets €30 cash back (i'm going to use cash to keep it straightforward.
Player 2 buys game at €50 2nd hand (current Gamestop take = €80 factoring in)
Player 2 trades it in: Gets €25 cash back
Player 3 buys game at €45 3rd hand (current Gamestop take = €100)
Player 3 trades it in: Gets €20 cash back
Player 4 buys game at €40 4th hand (current Gamestop take = €120)
Player 4 trades it in: Gets €15 cash back
Player 5 buys game at €35 5th hand (current Gamestop take = €140)
Player 5 trades it in: Gets €15 cash back
Player 6 buys game at €30 5th hand (current Gamestop take = €155)

So Gamestop have made €155, of which it is not all profit and a certain % must go back to the distributor, even assuming that would be 66% of the RRP (so €40) at launch time, they have still only made €115 in a year off one title that has been through the cycle 5/6 times.

I'm not defending Gamestop, I'm defending maths :p

The point was outlining their return on the recycle of second hand games. No point being convoluted in regards to how they distribute back to the customer, as you could argue that comes from seperate revenue streams.

Point still stands. And while we might not think on the surface that a game holds that value, the research and investigative journalism that was done on this, through the course of their research, the titles still held the large part of their original value.

Went in yesterday to see Destiny for 75 euro. Now thats a rip off

I buy everything digitally now. Xbox, playstation, Pc, 3ds, whatever. Once I finally got myself off of 4 meg and onto fibre, it's the only thing I've used.

Sure EA were charging like 70 quid for the Sims. My sister is a huge sims fan but even she balked at that price. I found it for her for 31 euro online. That is a massive difference.

Why pay 75 euro for big games like Fifa, Destiny, etc. when I can get them online for 40 euro? If you have good internet and can download them, save your wallet and buy it digitally.

Its strange how the fallout and the elder scrolls games seem to be like 20e cheaper than the going price of other games on the console for the first month.

Bought a PS4 / Destiny bundle and a couple of games the other day, got a barrage of questions which ended up with me:

    - getting the two games pre-owned, so at a discount - great!
    - being told I could later add the purchase to my gamestop loyalty card (I thought) but when I went back in they said it wasn't possible.
    - cashing in Destiny (I only wanted the console), which they put against Assassin's Creed Unity, but I've no record or receipt of this so I'm worried I've just given them a "€75" game for free.

If you pre ordered something, you should have got a receipt.

It's their Loyalty System that's going to stop me from buying from them.

Their Level 3 system allows you to return a new game within 7 days for a full cash refund. Took me a while to figure out why they were pushing it so hard as a reason to sign up. Then I realised it's so they can get the game back (where they would have only gotten a percentage of the original sale), then put the game up for second hand sale for about a fiver less and they get all of it.

One of the staff trying to sell me on it even told me you could do it as many times as you like. Though he then told me there was one guy who was doing it once or twice a week so they decided to limit him to only once every two weeks.

    Is this true?

    Astonished. What the **** like.

A lot of the stuff they used to do is now loyalty card exclusive, like the 25% extra trade in towards pre orders and what not.

The quicker the better everyone goes digital.

I was hoping the new generation of consoles would do away with disks and let these Gamestop gangsters go to the wall. Should of been gone years ago.

I agree but don't forget Microsoft were lambasted for taking this approach when they announced the xbox one. Although gradually it's getting better pricing is still a major issue in many markets, digital shoild be on par if not cheaper then physical copy. Again there are some sites that sell redemption codes the a good price.

The last game I bought in gamestop was gta v, with game protection, disc got damaged and they wouldn't replace even though I had all the receipts for some reason the game protection was not listed, since then it's been ganes from Amazon, eBay abd digital downloads but you need patience for these in the xbox one and ps4 if you are not on a fast connection.

    I hate consoles.

No PC elitist but I have my reasons. Consoles are overpriced, outdated, closed shops.

Sigh, Can't wait for Valve to annihilate these f*ckers.

Was looking around in the local gamestop today and over heard the fella behind the till saying that you can't trade in unless you are a member. Did I hear right that you have to pay for this membership loyalty thing. Give me Amazon any day

Not sure! I didn't explicitly pre-order anything - they suggested I could trade in Destiny and I said fine. They said I could put it against an individual game, and I mentioned AC Unity. I checked the receipt last night and it makes no mention of AC Unity - I'm hoping they made a record of it as otherwise I've no proof.

My standard answer with Gamestop going forward is "No. I want what I just handed you, nothing more or less". :(

Not quite, the level 3 card is €16.99, which is the 10% extra on trade ins, returning your games and stuff. The level 1 card is free, and with purchases you make, you buy your way up to level 3 essentially.

And you definitely should have got a receipt, I'd go in and ask.

So your telling me to return a item you need a level 3 card that costs €17 euro ?. No wonder i buy all my new games online now  expect Fifa 15 witch i got in Super Valve as it was only €50 for next gen ....

So you must pay for a higher "loyalty" card?

I dont ever see myself buying from Gamestop again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

Basically. Either the 16.99 to buy it out right, or you pay for it with what you buy, a euro = 1 carrot, 1200 carrots to go up a level.

Depends on what it is. I bought back Killzone and your man was going on about this is`nt a rental shop.

Over here in Canada, which I assume has much the same policies as Europe, you can return it as any level of Edge member with no questions asked within 7 days for a full refund. After 7 days, you're bang out of luck and it's a case of trading in or keeping it

Thread seems redundant imo, starts off with we hate gamestop mentality followed by nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah Gamestop ending with WE LOVE THE LEADER, I Mean GAMESTOP...

Tomorrow morning I am going up to Lisburn to buy games in GAME as for reasons still fully unknown to me I am not allowed to shop in Gamestop, IMO they are a bunch of overpriced bullies with no knowledge of what gamers want, continue to shop with them at your own peril.

Its mainly laziness on my part, to be honest. I go to Newry/belfast every 2 weeks, but by the time I've done my main shopping with a very fidgety 9 year old, I always forget or cant be bothered to go to Game, and I have a gamestop 10 minute walk from my door.

Corporately, that's probably pretty fair. For the staff, it's a job. They're working in a shop at the end of the day, they're not going to care all that much about the customers, no more than the lady in Tesco gives a toss about whether you enjoy your bread.

However, by the same note, anyone who continues give GameStop their business forfeits the right to actually complain about them. There are no shortage of alternatives these days, whether digital downloads, online stores or whatever.

Fine if you've never had any actual experience with GameStop before, a complaint there is par for the course, but if you're familiar with who they are and how they work and still complain, then I don't buy that the problem is them.

They're a horrible company, but they're a horrible company that people continually spend money with, and for that reason they're going to continue to be a horrible company

I don't know tbh, I had a war with them this time last year that ended with me being unpolitely told to fcuk off, they have been bullying me for years tbh and I don't ever want to give the cnuts any business ever again and would love to see them gone which will happen soon either way I will probably be taking legal action soon so I won't say anymore.

All I will say is be careful what you buy and trade with them as that loyalty card is a sneaky way to track what each customer is doing and tesco isn't really a good comparison as tesco don't buy from you.

Amongst other things I have OCD, an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, I like being able to buy my games in a store rather than over the internet, I have a very repetitive nature I am not really sure why I kept going back i thought some of the people in the stores were nice tbh, it really is a prime example of the basis of insanity in that I do the same thing over and over and expect different results, I am 100% serious here I have/should say had been shopping in Gamestop since the place opened as Gamesworld in the mid to late 90s.

I thought some of these people were my friends, they were not, since about 1999 they have called me a very bad name which to this day almost 16 years later every staff member from former members that work in different stores now and even post on this site to their ****ing area manager I haven't even met use this name as a slur towards me, I have been singled out amongst tens of thousands of Irish customers and been barred for as far as I can tell trading in too much which in a store thats prime purpose is to except traded games it makes no sense I vow to sue the next one of them to do with this company in any way shape or form that slanders me again.

I was barred from gamestop recently too.

I have been buying games accessories consoles there for years. in the November headset sale I bought a tango headset for 129 euro I rang head office and said I wanna change order to astro a 50 and they said no problem and debited my card. package arrived my wife checked inside box and headset was in there but it wasn't the headset I ordered and she knew no better. she put headset away as was for Christmas and first week in December we were wrapping presents and I spotted the headset was the original one I ordered and not the astro headset. so I rang gamestop head office explained that was the wrong headset and said I need it for Christmas. so they said we cant take it back prior to Christmas as too busy and risk of it being mislaid. I then said can I return it to local gamestop and head office said that's a good idea. so I went to gamestop newbridge and was told no way would they return without an email from head office. I again rang head office and they told store staff to return it for exchange or refund because of mixup etc.

so when I called into gamestop following day I was greeted with hi ray and store manager took headset from me cut all seals on box and searched box for content and to see was it opened before even though box was sealed. after he did what he had to he said to me by the way in future you are no longer allowed to trade in gamestop in Ireland I was like wtf.... infront of several customers he made utter **** of me and when I asked why I was barred he said take it up with head office I am not talking to you about it now leave please. so I am walking out raging carrying my daughter and I was utterly embarrassed.

I rang head office and they said yes you indeed have been barred by the manager, I was like what do you mean by that why am I barred?? they said the manager told the area manager I was an unimportant trader customer and I had threatened staff... I am a big guy but I am a soft soul I would never threaten anyone.........

so I asked to speak to senior management and eventually got talking to area manager and he went through what happened and spoke to manager and basically he said I traded too often and only really bought stuff on special so I was a nuisance customer basically.

eventually the area manager said that I was not barred and apologised stressing that the manager was obviously under a lot of stress with his job and not to take any notice of him.

I have not bought there since and I will never darken the door again unless I absolutely have to and it suits me....

sorry this post is badly put together btw but I am rushing

btw all those shops have a returns policy where managers are punished for taking faulty stock back so know your rights lads as the companies set managers task of pawning you off or trying to get you to not return faulty goods.

Werent you the dude, who bough a game in Gamestop, then ordered same game on Amazon, then you brought it for full refund amazon version to gamestop? So you would play game on launch, but not pay Gamestop price?
