Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

After being almost clipped from behind for the n-th time this morning, I figure I need a rear camera to compliment my front-camera.

    Requirements:

    - 1080p
    - Must continuously record even once card is full (overwriting previous content)
    - Weather-proof
    - Max €150

    any suggestions?

I'm still waiting to receive mine from the kickstarter they ran last year, but this seems to tick the boxes:

Interesting thanks, although I'd be keen on having a camera that would be on for the entire ride in case I wanted to record non-accidental footage

SJ1000 or SJ4000 should be fine for what you want. But the rideye looks cool too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,891 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

    hmm seems to be 720p

    Do these do continuous recording?

And the price is rich for what it is. I have a contour roam2 which is pretty ideal, and you could probably pick one up on adverts, or cheap enough on ebay.

    Yes, both offer continuous recording,

I would imagine (but I'm not certain) that when you hit the button to "save", it'll save everything up to that point in the ride, achieving what you're after.

Perhaps if you're this concerned and worried about your safety maybe change your route/cycling style to allow you a more 'enjoyable' cycling experence.

ha.. surprised it took this long to get a post like that! Good old predictable cycle forums

Yea, you get that that in chat rooms. Mad eh.

    Genuine query here.

Do you believe a rear facing camera will alter driver behaviour? Is there evidence, even anecdotal, to support this? (I don't know the answer)

Are you satisfied your riding style is optimal to deter unsafe driving? I thought TBW post was a genuine one.

As for cameras I can't assist,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,891 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

huh? It's nothing to do with altering driving behaviour, it's to cover my rear so I can present evidence of dangerous driving to the Gardai (I've already had success presenting evidence using my front camera... but I want to get a better camera for the rear as the front one is only 720p)

And no, this particular section of road does not allow for altering cycle behaviour as there are no alternatives.

    Anyway this is off-topic.

I've been reading good things about the SJ4000. You'll need to purchase from www.banggood.com to get the legit model as a lot of people are reporting fakes on aliexpress.

Did you use one of the brackets it came with to mount it?

    Handlebars or helmet mounted?

Techmoan seem to rate that and the SVC200 very highly.

    Is this the same SJ4000?
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/QUMOX-SJ4000-Silver-Waterproof-helmetcam/dp/B00HHRFHG6

There seem to be a good few cameras called "sj4000" on amazon/ebay, although this one has good reviews and only £75 with free delivery

I've the sj1000 mounted on the front of my helmet but the mounting kits are crap. The first one broke just putting it together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,891 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Btw for the SJ4000 does it have to be used in the waterproof case or is it somewhat water-resistant?

The one thing I like about my current camera is that I don't need to remove it from the mount to charge it or get the microSD, so it would be important that I'd not have to disconnect it every few days to charge it.

The rideye mentioned up thread supposedly will last a month of commuting, can't do any better, hope they come through to market soon.

yep the mounts are top notch!
couldn't fault them and they work with gopros also.
I mount it on my stem i had it on my helmet first but it was tough the get a good spot on MY helmet maybe not others and I had it up the front of the helmet so my head felt hevier and helmet fell forward.

the handlebar mount is very good and theres a little rubber insert you get that does aroud the stem to dampen shakes and I couldnt believe and still can't.

the screws to connect the two parts of the handlebar for my mount were to short for my girthy handlebars so i got two bolts and nuts that i had from an aldi kit.

You use the SJ4000 in it's plastic case, which is fully waterproof (submergible).
The case is fully compatible with GoPro mounting systems.
The camera with out case would not last long in the rain!
If using it as a dash cam, there is a mount available without the case, but it's not advisable to use this camera in car, due to it looking like a €400 camera, which will attract thieves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

The only trouble with the SJ4000/GoPro option is the shape/size of the device. They really are awkward. Helmet mounts look plain ridiculous, and even on bike mounts look a bit mad. But I do have an SJ4000 (clone...) and the quality is fantastic.

I have been out in the rain several times with the non waterproof door i wouldn't advise it but the rain didnt get in at all and the rain was heavy.

Do you need to unmount it to open the case, or can it just flip open without having detach the waterproof case from the mount?

I leave the mount on my bike and never take it off,
you can just open the case from the top and the camera can slide out takes 2 seconds.

will post a pic to explain when I get home.

Cool thanks, though I'll be using the seat-post mount so it'd be great if that's similar.

That's what drove me to the SJ1000, on the front of my white helmet you can barely see it, from the side you notice it alright.

I like the remote on the TCL 200 (https://joovuu.com/gb/new-products/142-svc-200-remote.html)
but £75 (incl delivery) for the SJ4000 can't be ignored

I don't think so, according to the specs they are the same resolution but have a different lens.

Regardless I was more concerned with not having an square box on the top of my head.

This isn't me but exactly what I wanted to avoid.

fair enough, although when i have the sj4000 on my head i don't have it mounted like he does i have it to the front of the hemet just above the bell logo.
    alot better looking imho.

If anyone's looking for a genuine SJ4000 (and don't mind waiting few weeks for delivery) FoxOffer.com are selling these with extra battery and charger for around 72 euro (incl delivery)

For any of those with SJ4000's, could anyone advise what the battery time is on them. I was speaking to someone who says it is little over half an hour. Which for a long commute daily or a sportive type event is far too short.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,891 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

I think it's up to an hour. Probably best to get a spare battery as in the link I put up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭aFlabbyPanda

I can only comment on the SJ1000 and it lasts around 90 minutes recording full HD with the lcd off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 369 ✭✭codrulz

My sj4000 has a battery of about 100 mins lcd off full hd.
Will be getting extra batterys though just to swap at food stop in sportives for piece o mind.

Was in pc world tallaght yesterday and saw a very interesting action cam down from 180 to 70 full hd mounts the works.
It was basically like an s74000 but branded for piece of mind, instant collection and cheap

A mobius from banggood is only 55ish euro...and (as you mention...) it is not water proof out of the box. I'd say this is not terribly suitable given the application.

If you research them you can see that there are Chinese replicas available which don't give great quality recordings , so you check the person your buying off , which would mean avoiding the likes of banggood etc.
With regards to not being suitable because of not being waterproof out of the box , I think that's why there are waterproof cases available , just like go pro cameras .
