Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Show up consistently in big games when his team needs him?

Scoring 5 goals against one of the worst teams in La Liga at home in a game Real were always going to win by a handy margin, hardly deserves a standing ovation.

Hugo Sanchez was doing that kind of thing for Real back in the 1980's when he won 4 Pichichi's in a row.

Ronaldo fans only argument is goals. By that reckoning Muller was a better player than Maradona and Cruyff. Infact the greatest international player ever was Ali Daei because he got the most goals. Ronaldo can score all the goals he want, but it ain't going to make him a better player. World class striker, average player

Doesnt he hold the record for the most consecutive goals in el classico? didnt he go head to head with ibra against sweeden to send his country to the world cup? and there just off the top of my head :pac::pac::pac:

The amount of bum hurt ronaldo haters in this thread is laughable, can you not just admire them both instead of being so childish ? both are obviously 2 completely different animals...

Just like Hugo Sanchez and Gerd Muller. Nothing wrong with that....but neither are considered amongst the Greatest Players who have played the game.

    And neither should Cristiano Ronaldo.

Based on nothing but goals again. So Ali Daei was the greatest international player ever then?

So you'll agree Ali Daei was the greatest international footballer ever to grace the field?

Your stupid argument might make sense if Ronaldo was banging 40+ goals in some no name league in Qatar however he has shown himself as the greatest in England and up there with the greatest in Spain.

Anyway a Villareal result of any sort would be nice today.

Sevilla to within 2 points of Valencia

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,578 ✭✭✭✭Turtwig

Villareal Valencia should be good. What are the odds on Sky having the audio so crap that we can't get any appreciation for the atmosphere in the stadium? :(

I hate to disappoint but there's really no need to post anything. Everyone has seen Messi in prime form the last few months, they know they've seen the greatest player thats ever played the game, 5 goals against lowly Granada in a 9-1 route isn't going to change my mind and I doubt it will change anybody elses. Messi, whIle a sensational goalscorer, is so much more than goals, he is the very essence of football, he is what every other player and what every young kid in a park with a football aspires to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

    Why?

Because they were mostly poachers, especially in Muller's case, fantastic goal scorers no doubt but they are not the same type of player as Ronaldo.....at all. It's not just goals people are basing their arguments on either, you'd swear with some people that Ronaldo never played a good game.

To say Ronaldo is an average player is frankly ridiculous, there's a lot of average players about and Ronaldo is definitely not one of them. Was it just goals that Real bought him for all that money when he was at United? Absolutely not. I say all this knowing Messi is the better player. But some of this 'Ronaldo is just goals' stuff is laughable.

Of course he's a poacher. His whole game is get rid of the ball to another player as quick as he can, and head straight to the box to look for goals for personal glory

Ronaldo is not a poacher! He does not hang off the last defender. He gets the ball and runs at players. He arrives from deeper positions to attack the ball in the air.

Yeah ,thats very irritating, they block all the atmosphere out .

I watched the Atletico Real match a few months back on Canal + and the stadium was a cacophony of sound . The sound was deafening .
Over on Sky it was filtered out so we could hear Gerry Armstrong dispensing his cliched pearls of wisdom.

Sorry, "untraditional poacher". That better? If you actually watch him over 90 minutes, he never runs at players. Takes the ball out wide and around to the corner flag, because it deflects from the fact he can rarely beat his man.

He doesnt run at players that much anymore thats true but I guess he is getting older and has knee issues, which rob you of pace .

He can still beat a man if he wants ,no doubt of that and is still fast.

With the pace Real had in the team last season ,Bale and Di Maria they did most of the running for the team so Ronaldo adapted his game .
They are lacking Di Maria's pace this season,Rodriguez is not fast and neither is Isco.

Did you not see Ronaldo running at the Barcelona defence time and time again 2 weeks ago ?
How can he be a poacher anyway ,he is a complete footballer.
Two good feet, good in the air, fast ,strong, good dribbler, good stamina ,good technique, excellent reading of the game ,etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,970 ✭✭✭mufcboy1999

So you'll agree Ali Daei was the greatest international footballer ever to grace the field?

No but you're arguement that ronaldo doesn't perform enough in the big games is ridiculously stupid. You sound like eamon dunphy a few years back, who admirably eat his words. Scoring goals believe it or not is a contribution worthy of the phrase stepping up, he's scored and assisted against countless big teams for Madrid, united and his country.

Bottom line is messi is messi and ronaldo is ronaldo, there's no point in comparing them constantly, there both untouchable but yet have very different styles of play and always have.

Messi is undoubtedly easier on the eye, a supreme dribbler of the ball with amazing skill and yes way more of a team player. Ronaldo is more power and speed with undoubtedly imo the best heading ability of any footballer in Europe, he's built for counter attacking football.

Now stop crying and admire them both, we'll be lucky if we ever see two greats in one era again.

People need to stop rising to The Golden Miller. Not everyone's opinions are worth a reply. Threads get ruined that way.

Yes! Come on! Maybe it wasn't too pretty in northern Spain tonight but not a single culé will care. It's 3 points, it's a big 3 points away from home against a very competitive opponent, it's 3 points after the international break and the team isn't in full flow, it's the kind of 3 points that champions pick up and with each passing game, with every 3 points gained, Barcelona look more and more like champions.

Ah you gotta love la liga.

    Player throws boot at linesman.
    Player throws turf at player.

Great result for Villarreal and fully deserved.
Barcelona need Alba back for psg. Especially if Moura is playing.

Felt sorry for celta felt they deserved a draw. Barca were better in the second half. Celta unlucky not to score.

Has anyone got a list of the top six run in final games?

That's why he was sent off. The ref didn't like his disregard for the use of a precious commodity.

Turan throwing boot or lad throwing grass..

Tough times for best LOL in la liga.

Thanks for that. I don't remember Granada being that bad or was it just a master class from Real? They levelled them. Five goals in one game. I can only think of Tottenham scoring 9-1 against Wigan in 2009.

Ouch.....La Real and Moyes could be in for a long night - 2-0 down against Atleti after 10 mins.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭irishguitarlad

Sociedad need a decent corner taker.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,868 ✭✭✭Andersonisgod

Double cover on Messi and a woeful angle to work with? The great man doesn't care, he skips past Edgar, the curl he gets on the ball to beat the keeper can only be described as majestic. Messi is the difference. 1-0

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,868 ✭✭✭Andersonisgod

Don't let Suarez 1 vs 1 in the box, it can only end in disaster for you and that's what has happened. Left foot, top corner, top quality.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,868 ✭✭✭Andersonisgod

It's a plan B you wanted? It's a plan B you've gotten, Barcelona, of all teams, are set piece masters. Marc Bartra this time the one getting on the end of a Xavi corner. 3-0

    Some run they are on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,868 ✭✭✭Andersonisgod

The front 3 all link up for the third goal, it's Suarez's 2nd of the night, he is surely the most lethal hitman in the sport today. 4-0, 7 point gap, Barcelona have eyes on this league crown.

Barca's next few fixtures are incredibly tough. They have to lose/draw at least one game. Sevilla away, PSG away, Valencia at home, PSG at home. That's a very tough set of fixtures for a two week period.

If they get through it unscathed I expect them to win the league.

They won at the Mestalla and Valencia are not great away from home this season so I expect them to win that.

My opinion is they'll draw at the Sanchez Pizjuan and narrowly lose at the Parc des Princes.

A win for Madrid. Gutsy performance from rayo. Actually the better team up until the final third where they were a sack of blighted spuds. Some awful squandering of great positions.
