Van hire for trip to France

A friend is trying to hire a van to transport some stuff back from France but seems all the hire companies only allow travel in Ireland and the UK. Has anyone come across anybody who would allow travel further afield?

For the price of the hire they would be better of buying an old van surely?

I checked this before and could only get AA insured as far as mainland UK. It'd be worth checking if you could get a French insurer separately for when you're on French soil or flying to the UK to rent from a dealer that does mainland Europe insurance.
