Aldi seem to have completed a deal to purchase the Gala Supermarket in Cahirciveen and will open in November.

Gala have just started a closing sale.

In case someone think a Gala would not be big enough - the one in Cahirciveen is. (its just under 14,000 sq ft)

This will be the second occasion when Aldi have tried to come to Caherciveen.
Should bring people from other areas to the town & encourage some locals to shop locally.

If I remember the previous time they tried to get the old sock factory re-zoned to retail use. That was always going to be difficult.

The deal they have done with Gala is straight forward as no additional or change in planning is required - simply a change of internal layout and a new name.

Which also means objections are pointless :)

I suppose they wouldn't be so successful if locals were providing a similar service.

While Aldi is great for consumers, not sure a small local business can really hope to provide a similar service because of the scales they operate on. There is a train of thought that such shops can benefit an area as they draw more consumers in, but think the best hope for shops hoping to benefit from the increase in traffic is to provide a different service. Even in retail parks you thus will get a Harvey Normans, Woodies, Debenhams, Marks and Spencers etc. because they provide a variety.

There is also a new Aldi being built in Kenmare currently close to the current Lidl and Supervalu offerings adjacent the Kenmare - Kilgarvan Bypass linkroad.
