Just found this good documentary, from PBS in the US, recently added to YouTube:

The Transatlantic Cable : Documentary on The First Communication Cable Across the Atlantic Ocean.

Many in the maritime industry and few outside realize just how far back the submarine cable industry goes.
The start of a whole new maritime industry and a huge impact on communications and society.

Begins at 1:40 after some in-line commercials.
