Closing date in selling property

We are selling our house and went sale agreed around 11 June 2014. We are buying a different house and went sale agreed in that pending sale of our own property in April 2014.
We had mortgage approval, surveys etc all done and was waiting for our buyers to sign, which they did last week as they were away for a while. The day after they signed they indicated that they want to close in November, which would not suit us as we and our vendors were waiting for them so we can close our transaction. We stated that it wont suit and that we want both transactions to close by end of next week. In meantime we have signed our contracts and so did the people we are buying from.
So all contracts signed and deposits payed. Our buyers came back suggesting 2nd week in October as meeting us halfway as they need to give notice to their landlord.
Again we stressed it does not suit as we are ready to move and we have our own vendors wanting to close their sale.
They came back again saying that they can only do 1st weekend in Oct and if they have to go another week earlier they want a reduction in purchase price to cover their costs for having to close earlier.
Our solicitor wants to try to get an amenable date, but we can't as we are caught in middle of 2 transactions and frankly as their request for delayed closing was very last minute I do not feel that is our problem.
Anybody have some advice on where we stand legally in terms of pushing for a closing date as soon as possible? Or any advice on how to get this moving?
