Electric Picnic started out as the cheaper alternative to big super festivals.
The emphasis was on art and alternative music with a more mature chilled out crowd.

However over the years, this festival has grown and become totally commercialised, it is now one of the most expensive festivals throughout the year. The last time I was at Picnic there was very little difference between it and your typical Oxegen.

These kinda festivals can't stay true to their beginnings forever, just look at how far the Glastonbury's of today are from the 1970's and 80's vision.

I agree with most of what you are saying, but to say there is very little difference between it and Oxegen is nonsense. It may have escalated in size and price, and broadened its focus musically, but there is still a great atmosphere. There was always the feeling that trouble could break out just about anywhere at Oxegen. I've never felt that way at EP.

I don't think Sam Smith is headline material? He has a good voice no doubt and I listen to his music occasionally and I think he'd be ok in one of the tents maybe, I wouldn't bother going to see him though. I dunno he just doesn't seem like the right kind of act for the headline slot.

I'm a tiny bit gutted that Alt-J won't be at EP.

me too, i saw them at optimus alive in lisbon in 2013 and they stole the show, i'd never heard of them before even tho they won the mercury award that year. they're fecking great

I haven't seen them live yet! Don't think I'll make it to Longitude either.

Re: Sam Smith, I just can't warm to his brand of faux soul. There is something so forced about the songs and his voice. It leaves me cold.

If the promoters were going to spend a bit of money on the pop/soul genre, Bruno Mars and his band create an amazing party atmosphere, and his is a far more raw and honest talent.

End of the Road headliners announced - War on Drugs, Tame Impala and Sufjan Stevens.

Sufjan is a total legend and Tame Impala would be great too... perhaps a bit much to hope EP will bag all of their headliners.... would absolutely love to see Sufjan though.

It's a festival on the same weekend as EP but in the UK and there was at least some overlap between the festivals last year (St Vincent for example).

Lower down their bill are Alvvays whom I would love to see - other acts include Future Islands and Django Django.

    Are you sure?

The official sites seem to have both EP and EotR on 4-6 September....

Well that is true, but it certainly is heading that way, unfortunately!

Btw, what on earth are Ride doing headlining festivals!!! A very much second rate Brit pop act, really?!?!

Groove Armada added to Isle of Wight festival (which has an absolutely cracking line up btw!) im tipping them for EP.

The actual group or the DJ set?

Edit: Just looked at the website, its a DJ set, nothing to get too excited about, their set was one of the most boring sets at Life festival last year it was like they phoned it in or something.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Agree with everything apart from the price bit, EP admission was always expensive, if anything cost has come down with the early bird.

Didn't David Guetta cancel a show because he lost his USB stick?

The Libertines just announced to headline T in the Park. I think I'd like The Libertines at Picnic, Up The Bracket is a stone cold classic but I'm not sure what they're fanbase would be like. I'm tempted to say it would be fine since they're all probably in their 30s at this point but they are the sort of band that could attract plenty of tossers.

They'll more likely play Phoenix Park, Marlay or Viva stadium, they would be an MCD cash cow, they are mainly behind T in the Park too so Phoenix Park serves the former Oxegen punters.

Would it not be Marlay Park rather than the Phoenix Park?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

maybe the smaller area in Marlay Park that they use for Longitude if they're going to do an outside gig.
there's no way they'd sell 40k tickets at the normal gig setup in MP.
absolutely no chance they'll be in Phoenix Park or the Aviva.

Depends who's Djing to be fair. Can't compare the likes of a decent Dj to some band playing a Dj set

It really is a wonderful line up. Fleetwood mac, the prodigy...one could hope the picnic would have bands of that stature....it would have to be sold out before you could announce the prodigy
