What do the following have in common?

    Fairview
    Temple Bar
    Phibsborough
    Ranelagh
    Summerhill
    Stoneybatter
    The Coombe

    That these do not:
    Finglas
    Rathmines
    Drumcondra
    IFSC
    Ballybough
    Terenure

If it is really obvious to you, perhaps put you answer in spoiler tags [noparse]
    Answer

Does it have anything to do with
    churches
    ¿

It's to do with the names and the areas. It isn't about features or people.

    Appear in Dubliners songs?

It's not at all obvious to me, but I'm going to guess with
English etymology rather than Irish, except that doesn't explain the IFSC
    ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,905 ✭✭✭Aard

    I think I know.
Each of the first set is the name of a street, and the surrounding area is named after the street. I wasn't sure about Phibsboro though. The second set refer to the neighbourhoods. There's no such address as "22 Terenure", but there is a "22 Ranelagh" for example.

There's a finglas road and old finglas road though.

^I think you misunderstood what I meant.
Just to clarify, "Ranelagh" is the name of both a street and a neighbourhood. As in, the main road in Ranelagh is called "Ranelagh" with no "Street" or "Road" or anything else added. Same for the rest of the first group. Otoh, there is no street called "Finglas". As you highlight, there's "Finglas Road" however, like the rest of the items in the second set.

Nope Phibsborough isn't just Phibsborough so can't be that.

Does sound plausible bar that though. This is going to annoy me. I am reporting the OP

    Awesome :D

I love finding out about little quirks like that. In a similar vein, there's a
street called "Old Kilmainham". Doesn't exactly fit the bill, but interesting nonetheless!

I think from memory that it may actually qualify.

Edit: a quick check on Google confirms it does.

It's been 6 months, you bring this tormenting puzzle back into my mind again?! I think you could be banned for being a d*ck now!! I should report you. Tormenting users. Help us out a little? I spent six hours today studying the list, writing each place down and their area numbers. Is it a correlation with the names and their respective numbers?

Oh, to punish you all, I found another - Dolphin's Barn (there is also a Dolphins Barn Street, Avenue and Road).
