PIO, 10% calving difficulty but never had an issue with him at all before. Cow was only two weeks over too, the other cow was just a week over to a BA so was expecting a far longer wait. There's at least 20kg between the two calves.
Something could have spooked them last night I guess but they hadn't seemed anxious this morning. Don't know what I'll do with her yet, she's still down, trying to get up but just not able to get her right hind leg under her to provide the 'spring'. Have left the door open so she can work towards the door.
Bollocks that anyway, bad year for us. I was only talking to the dead lorry driver at the neighbours the other day, I'll soon be on first name terms with him :(
you get years like that , dont dwell on it

Story could be worse Kovu, lost the best springer I had this year and her calf after a calving like that. Was right thick over it for a few days but we are nearly finished calving now and thats the only casualty and if it stays at that it will be one of our better years. Never go a year here without losing something. The year my mother died everything in the place had a go at it aswell.

It went tits up. Whatever could go wrong, did go wrong. No progress by 2 so decided to bring her in, that was about an hour after the first bag. All she was doing was getting up and lying down again.
Had to bring them up through four fields as typically they were down beside the river. She was having none of it and ran back twice, then jumped into the field below the shed.
So it was about four by the time we got her in, wouldn't go up the crush at all. Stuck her mother up in front of her and she followed her up.
Handled her & huge feet. Jack and ropes.
Got jammed around the chest area, cow went down on top of the jack, not even fully down, sitting like a dog and couldn't get her head free until I knocked he headlock bars out of the sizing parts.
Went the full length of the jack, had to take ropes off and put them up above the knees, gave up on the jack once we got past the navel as it was a hindrance more than a help by that stage.
Got calf out, no movement, no sign of life. Tried everything, even mouth to (nose) mouth. So fook it anyway. Cow is still down too.

But the other cow had a nice heifer calf, so that's good!

Ah **** , I hate hearing stories like that, but sure we all have um. At least you have one good healthy calf. If you can get her to the field I'm sure she'll be fine, chalk it up to experience and move on.

Ta for all the replies everyone, the second wee calf certainly cheered me up a bit. Now just have to get her sucking, glad I left her in earlier. Both of them calved out last year by themselves so I took my eye off the ball a bit with them :(
Have one more heifer in the same field and she'll be brought in now next week for 3 weeks of hay.
On the plus side, another cow went incalf to that expensive bull Queenshead Altea. Always look on the bright side of life, de du, de du, de du de du de du.

Still down but out the field which is good. Taking water and hay. Gave her a shot of antibiotic as a precaution, couple of cuts on her knees .

Sometimes. It's just frightened they are and confidence goes maybe try the tractor and hoist if she's not making an effort tomorrow

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,241 ✭✭✭✭Kovu

Have no hoist here! She'll make it on her own I reckon. Eating away and drinking so with a bit of luck she'll pop up in her own time.
Was dragging calf out to the lower shed for dead lorry, have attached pic with the calving jack for scale, so warning, dead calf photo :pac:
She would never have calved on her own but I regret not taking her in earlier yesterday, might have had some chance then. No point dwelling on it though, won't bring him back to life.

That is some massive calf. May the harm of the year go with him - as the old people say around here.

I wonder can there be an extension put on to a jack or are some jacks longer than others

I reckon you could be able to source a longer bar alright, but it would make it even more unwieldy if you're in a tight place. Also the longer the bar, the more force you're going to be exerting with less effort when pushing down; more chance of damaging the cow without realising it.
Think I'll stick to putting ropes on above the knees if needs be. The extra few inches could make all the difference with some calves.

Serious calf. Pity he didn't make it. It happens us all some time. Don't beat yourself up over it. I tried that years ago an it doesn't work!

Is he standing in a hole? Serious back end on him I presume that's the mother in the corner of the picture? I can't understand more lads not using a touch of blue through the cows.

Hes kinda down hill in abit of a depression I spose. Hes serious all over to be fair to him. The picture doesn't really do him justice. He's got muscle everywhere.
Ya she's a blue out of a limo. Nice drop of milk in her and a great cow to drive a calf so I'd be hopeful that the calf will turn into a serious weanling.

I think I have it figured out. The app won't let you add an attachment so have signed in on the touch site

Hopefully this works it's just a few heifers we've put to the bull. BB on the left hand side is home bred the rest were reared on a bucket.
