Unfortunately I haven't seen the game, but what a dissapointing result for Georgia...
From some georgian comments it was the worst performance under Milton Haig era
Georgia led 9-6 until the minute 64

Georgia beat Japan 35-24 today which is a great result for them.

20,000 at the game which must be close to a sellout. Seems like they got decent entertainment for their money. Great up and coming rugby nation.

Some highlights of young centre Merab Sharikadze (21 years old) with Georgia

He made 22 tackles against Ireland!

Interesting battle in Top14 today between Stade Français and Toulon.

3 georgians are in the starting line up of Toulon :
    - Levan Chilachava, tighthead prop, 23 years old. Was on the bench against Ireland
    - Kote Mikautadze, lock, 23 years old. Started the game against Ireland
    - Mamuka Gorgodze, eightman, 30 years old.

Chilachava will go head to head with Stade Français georgian loosehead Zurab Zhvania. Zhvania (23 years old) was also on the bench against Ireland, while his teammate Davit Kubriashvili (in the starting XV against Ireland) is on the bench.
Zhvania had some strong performances this year both for Stade Français and Georgia

Other georgian players in Top14 for this boxing day include Clermont's tighthead prop Davit Zirakashvili, Montpellier's loosehead Mikheil Nariashvili and 22-year old prop Lekso Kaulashvili from La Rochelle. Kaulashvili, usually a tighthead will play at loosehead today while Vasil Kakovin is on the bench with Toulouse. Brive will play with Karlen Asieshvili at loosehead and props Goderzi Shvelidze and Anton Peikrishvili on the bench.

    In other news,
    - loosehead prop Val Rapava-Ruskin (22 years-old) is the current Worcester's top try scorer in Championship. He scored 6 tries in 6 games and also scored a try in British & Irish Cup.

    - 20 years-old tighthead prop Saba Meunargia played his first game for Connacht first team against Bayonne in Challenge Cup two weeks ago. Meunargia came to Ireland at 16 years old and plays for Buccaners. He represented Ireland U19 at international level.

    - Here is a list of U20 players in french academies. Georgia can use some of these players for the next JWRT (JWC second division)
    • Zaur Kharebava (1995, loosehead prop, La Rochelle)
    • Giorgi Neparidze (1996, hooker, Bordeaux-Bègles)
    • Beka Kakabadze (1995, tighthead prop, Clermont)
    • Roland Kvachadze (1995, lock, Clermont)
    • Mikheil Babunashvili (1996, lock, Tarbes)
    • Besik Gogoladze (1996, lock, Tarbes)
    • Tornike Zoidze (1996, lock/backrow, Clermont)
    • Beka Gorgadze (1996, eightman, Mont-de-Marsan)
Georgia can also call up Leeds Carnegie prop Toko Tedoradze (1996) and Leinster's loosehead Vak Abdaladze. Abdaladze played for Ireland U18. Toko is the son of the pro MMA fighter Tengiz Tedoradze

Think I heard a reporter say there are 19 props from Georgia in top14 squads. That would be crazy!
So much forward talent generally and particularly the front row. If Georgia could someone get a few backs together they could suprise a few sides.

If a Fiji or Samoas backs joined with Georgia's forwards it would be quite a team.

Those are remarkable numbers! Is rugby a minority sport in Georgia?

Rugby is considered as the second team sport in Georgia.

Soccer is #1, with ,according to FIFA website, 26 786 registered players and 209 clubs

For the 2011 RWC, Georgian Rugby Union had 4 181 registered players, with only 878 senior male players (the only team from the RWC under 1000 senior male players).
According to the official rugby europe website, Georgia has now 6 544 registered players (+56% in three years), it was 2013 statistics. We don't know for 2014 stats but Bradley says in an interview there are around 8 000 registered players.

Georgia produces some good athletes in Judo and Wrestling

Yeah no geographic links so wouldn't happen unless it was some sort of Babas variation but I reckon they'd be able to take on any team.

I've been thinking for a while that the best thing that could realistically happen for Georgia is the growth of the Russian league. If it could get to Pro 12 standard within 20 years there'd be huge money put into Russian academies and Georgians would be a very sizeable proportions of those academies imo. Now how many of those Georgians would end up playing senior rugby in a Russian jersey is another matter.

Now how many of those Georgians would end up playing senior rugby in a Russian jersey is another matter.

centre Davit Kacharava who captained Georgia during November internationals plays in Russia for Enisey-STM while a prop, Mamuka Khechikovi plays for Krasny Yar.
Until last season, there was a team called Spartak Moscow in the russian championship. About an half of the players were georgians but the team disapeared for financial reasons. Most of the georgians from Spartak plays now in the Georgian league. Some georgians plays for Russia national team, brothers Tsnobiladze (Grigory - loosehead and Valery - hooker) and Giorgi Minadze (lock) but they refused to play against Georgia.

About budgets of eastern european clubs
    Russia - Professional Rugby League - 8 teams :
Enisey-STM (current champions) and Krasny Yar (2d): more than 200 000 000 RUB (actually a bit more than 3M€, it was 4M€ before the crash of the ruble)
    squad Enisey-STM : http://estxv.blogspot.fr/p/blog-page_26.html
    squad Krasny Yar : http://estxv.blogspot.fr/p/krasny-yar.html

I guess the budget of VVA Saracens, the team from Yuri Gagarin Air Force Academy who signed last season a partnership with the Saracens, is about 1,5M€
    squad VVA Saracens : http://estxv.blogspot.fr/p/vva-saracens.html

    Fili Moscow (6th) : 30 000 000 RUB = currently 480 000€

    Romania - Super Liga - 7 teams
Timisoara, winner of the Romanian Cup and semi finalist of the Super Liga anounced 2,5M€
    squad Timisoara : http://estxv.blogspot.fr/p/rcm-timisoara.html

Before the season, Farul Constanta anounced 3M€, they was finalist of the championship
    squad Farul : http://estxv.blogspot.fr/p/farul-constanta.html

Not sure about Baia Mare's budget but as current Super Liga champions and Romanian Cup finalists and from their squad, I guess it's at least 2M€, maybe 2.5M€
    squad Baia Mare : http://estxv.blogspot.fr/p/csm-baia-mare.html

    Georgia - Liga Umaghlesi - 10 teams
I don't know the budgets, I just know each club receive 400 000 GEL (= 172 000€) from the federation, local authorities give money and there is sponsorship so I guess budget are about 500 000€, maybe more for some club, a bit less from others.
The current champions are Lelo Saracens Tbilisi
    squad Lelo Saracens : http://estxv.blogspot.fr/p/20142015.html

Current leaders of the championship, unbeaten after 11 days, are Kochebi Bolnisi
    squad Kochebi : http://estxv.blogspot.fr/p/kochebi-bolnisi.html

I find the growth of the game in a country like Georgia very interesting. Must say I really enjoy this thread and taken a keen interest in Georgia's progress as a result.

For 2015 I hope they produce a couple of decent backs and particularly a good No.10 to guide the team a bit more.

Zurab Zhvania scored again a try for Stade Français against Toulon tonight!

Lasha Khmaladze is a decent flyhalf. His game against Ireland was not his best for sure but Georgia had only 36% of possession. But he played well in defense (he made 15 tackles and missed 2)
That's him in action for Tbilisi Caucasians against Rovigo during Challenge Cup qualifying competition :

IMO the weakest positions are fullback and scrumhalf...

Croket you are a legend! Do you have any connection to Georgia? My parents are Russian so I have a little bit of an interest there, but I'm very interest in Georgia's progress. Very interesting and beautiful country.

No connection to Georgia. In fact i'm french, but Georgia is my second favorite national team. I think it's the team that grew the fastest. They played their first international game in 1989. In the 1990's they lost their both games against Poland, they had a draw against Luxemburg and they were smashed 55-3 by Netherlands. In the 2000's they played their first RWC in 2003, they lost 46-19 against South Africa and they played 2007 RWC with a lost 14-10 against Ireland. In the 2010's, they played 2011 RWC and they only conceded 9 tries in their 4 games. they won their first game against a team from the top10 IRB (Samoa in 2013) and another win against a Top10 IRB team the following year (Japan).
I'm also a big fan of Gorgodze.

More generally, I follow closely the emerging European nations

I'd like to see an eastern europe pro championship. 10 teams with the 5 strongest clubs (squads and budgets) and 5 franchises

    4 romanian teams :
    - CSM Baia Mare (current Super Liga champions and finalist of the Romanian cup)
    - Farul Constanta (current Super Liga finalists)
    - RCM Timisoara (Super Liga semi finalist and winner of the Romanian Cup)
    - Bucharest Wolves (who select players from other Super Liga teams, Dinamo Bucharest, CSM Bucharest, Steaua Bucharest and U Cluj)

    3 russian teams :
    - Enisey-STM (current RPL champions)
    - Krasny Yar (RPL finalists and 2013 champions)
    - Russia Select XV (based in Sochi because the weather, with players from VVA Saracens Moscow, Slava Moscow, Metallurg Novokuznetsk, Fili Modcow, Imperia Penza and Bulava Taganrog)

3 georgian teams - franchises from Georgian Rugby Union.
    georgiafranchiseshsd.jpg
We can imagine the Georgian Rugby Union can take under contract 12-15 georgians in ProD2/Federale1 to play for their franchises
    - Tbilisi Caucasians (Lelo Saracens - 3d ; Locomotive - 5th ; Armazi - 7th ; Jiki - 8th ; Armia - 9th ; Universiteti - 10th)
    - Kvemo Kartli (Kochebi Bolnisi - 1st ; Kharebi Rustavi - 4th)
    - Georgia West (Batumi - 2d ; Aia Kutaisi - 6th)

Georgia's captain Irakli Machkhaneli (73 caps, 13 as captain, 24 tries scored) retires from international rugby.
Mostly known for his big hits, the winger played 7 years in France, including 4 in ProD2.
He was injured during the first 2014 November test against Tonga so didn't took part of the game against Ireland

2 of his spectacular international tries :

Two good games to finish the ENC in Russia & Romania.

Hopefully they'll get the two wins over Tonga & Namibia in the WC. Surely they'll be expected to beat Namibia but the Tonga game will be key. I tried to get tickets for that one but didn't get anything through the ballot and it's now sold out. 16,500odd in Kingsholm will be a great atmosphere for them.

I see Mamuka Gorgodze had a cracking game at the weekend making 18 tackles and missed none. Was the Toulon man of the match although they lost.

Pity he didn't play against Ireland in November, such an important player for the team.

Yes, and he is more than an important player, he is the leader of the team. When the team is in a bad period, just pass the ball to Gorgodze and the team returns in the right direction.

The other important miss against Ireland was Clermont's tighthead prop Zirakashvili, who is more than a excellent scummager.

As for the last Top14 day, in addition of the Gorgodze performance, Mikheil Nariashvili was named in the team of the week, in particular for having taken over Carl Hayman in scrum

Vasil Kakovin hit on Benjamin Kayser

He is the first choice at loosehead with Georgia when he is fit. And first choice ahead Gurthro Steenkamp at Toulouse. But unfortunately he is sooo often injured...

would Georgia be at the same level now as Italy, or have they a bit further to go before they match them ?
Following the AI they would be a long way off Ireland , I assume a place in the 6 or 7 Nations would be a short/long term objective , be nice to see , great country.

IMO, Italy still a little better than Georgia
But I think in 3-4 years Georgia will be ahead Italy

Here are results from U18 european championship
    2014 : Italy 15-13 Georgia
    2013 : Georgia 17-12 Italy
    2012 : Georgia 20-18 Italy

Also, most of best italians are thirties : Ghiraldini (30), Castrogiovanni (33), Cittadini (32), Bortolami (34), Geldenhuys (33), Zanni (30), Parisse (31), Orquera (33), Garcia (30), Masi (33) and I don't see a lot of players able to replace him.

In the Georgian team, only Gorgodze (30) and Zirakashvili (31) are important players aged 30+

During last november tests there was a bunch of players born in the 90's : Mamukashvili (24), Nariashvili (24), Chilachava (23), Zhvania (23), Mikautadze (23), Lomidze (22), Tkhilaishvili (23), Bitsadze (23) for the forwards
Khutsishvili (22), Mchedlidze (22), Aptsiauri (19), Giorgadze (20) for the backs. A lot of them have a lot of potential.

But unfortunately, I don't think Italy want play against Georgia

    No idea sorry...

In other news, good game from Mamuka Gorgodze against Ulster this weekend. He entered on the pitch at the 58th minute. One try and one try-assist to his credit. Also 3 tackles (0 missed) and 16m ball in hand in 4 runs. His teammate, the lock Konstantin Mikautadze also had a good game, 10m ball in hand in 2 runs, 3 tackles (0 missed) and he won a turnover. He came on the pitch at min 63.

I'm not sure how much money goes into rugby in Romania in total but clubs in the superliga receive a fair bit of public money. Here is a bit of inofrmation about it, it certainly seems to be a growing league.

All the teams are fully professional and they all include foreign players alongside Romanian ones. 1-2 matches from each round are broadcasted live by the public TV station TVR and the remaining are live streamed online by the Federation

5.55 M€ is not the full budget of GRU but only state funding. There is also IRB grants and sponsorship.
Each club from the Liga Umaghlesi (georgian championship) receive 400 000 GEL (= 177 000€) from the GRU
So on aggregate 1 770 000€ to the 10 clubs from the championship

AFAIK, the romanian clubs don't receive money from the romanian federation.
Super Liga teams have strong budgets (2-3 M€ for the big three) thanks to local authorities and sponsorship.
A link shows public money allowed to some clubs :
    http://www.prosport.ro/sportbiz/statul-roman-finanteaza-sportul-prin-consiliile-locale-si-judetene-cu-peste-80-de-milioane-de-euro-care-sunt-cele-mai-generoase-judete-13475854

The CSM Bucharest receive more than 1 000 000€, Timisoara receive approx 867 000€

About the FRR (romanian federation) I don't think their budget is very high...
    I found this link http://www.prosport.ro/sport-life/special/exclusiv-mts-a-impartit-bugetul-pe-anul-2014-top-3-ramane-acelasi-suma-totala-60-23-milioane-de-lei-11997956
It seem in 2014 the FRR receive 780 000€ from the Ministry of Youth and Sports
They also had a main sponsor, CEC Bank. CEC Bank appears on the national team jersey and on all Super Liga stadiums (and national team stadium). Also the Super Liga is named "Super Liga CEC Bank".
And the FRR receive IRB grants

Zirakashvili : Team of the Week, Champions Cup

Davit Zirakashvili (Clermont): Classy as ever as Clermont's pack won the overall battle of the forwards in the Salford rain. The 31-year-old Georgian tighthead always seems to deliver. A mention for Toulon's bonus-point try scorer, Martin Castrogiovanni.

I never seen Meunargia play... I know he came to Ireland at 15 or 16 years old.
His caps for Ireland U18 and U19 and the fact he played for Connacht first team in European Challenge Cup makes me thinks he is a good prospect.

When you put the words "Georgian" and "prop" together, it's always a good prospect, no need to say this:pac:

Not really Georgia but I thought this was the best place to put it.

I hear the Romanian League is making great progress at the moment with a few new teams being added to their second division. Also I see the Wolves are playing their match against Newcastle this weekend in Transylvania in a stadium in Cluj.

I believe they have matches broadcast on national tv too.

Yeah, Romanian Super Liga made great progress since 2 years now with a lot of strong foreign players.
For the 2015 season, the Super Liga will have 7 teams (the same as the 2014 season), from March 29 to May 30 only. Then, national team will prepare the RWC with an extented squad and the Super Liga will resume after the RWC for the play off.
A new domestic competition will take place while the internationals prepare for the RWC. It will consist of the 7 Super Liga clubs and an 8th one selected from the best players of the second division. They will be split in two groups, the competition starts on June 13 and the final will be on September 5.

The second division will have 10-11 clubs, Barlad (the current champion), Navodari, Poli Iasi, Petrosani, Suceava, Arad, Galati (all these teams played in second division last year), Buzau (2013 second division champion and back after a blank year), Farul Constanta U23 (a team created by Farul Constanta and the french ProD2 side Béziers, who will send some of his own U23 players to play in Romania), CS Manastur (a team from Cluj created by french students and with a lot of foreign students - almost french- and young romanians) and maybe CSM Bucarest reserve team (the club had 45 players under contract last year).

I found other budgets of federations
    Romania = about 3M€
    Spain = 2.5 M€

The budget of the italian federation is 45M€
It include 5M€ from state funding, 19M€ earnings from 6 Nations, Pro12 and EPCR, 5M€ from IRB grants
    http://www.ilguastatore.it/la-ricchissima-federazione-rugby-finisce-in-rosso-di-bilancio/

    In other news,

    - Georgia national team will have his proper stadium, all financed from private funds. 25K to 30K, designed by the same company who made the Aviva Stadium.

    - The Lelo Saracens (current champions of the georgian championship) will also have his proper stadium
    f5f628a32781664f10b422e1b5b06afc.jpg

    - hooker Jaba Bregvadze signed for the current leader Kochebi Tbilisi. Great to see him back after a serious neck injury... He was forced to retire and he is finally back. Bregvadze (27 years old) holds 24 caps for Georgia and played for Toulouse from 2012 to 2014 (24 Top14 games).

    - Davit Bolghashvili was named head coach of the Federale1 side Lille. He is not the only georgian to coach a french side. Viktor Didebulidze coaches the ProD2 team Massy, Akvsenti Giorgadze is the specialist of the hookers at Toulouse and with the french national team.

Georgia's coach Milton Haig named a 27-men squad for the first two 6 Nations B games, against Germany and Portugal
    Player | Position | Birth | Caps | Team
    Vasil Kakovin|Loosehead prop|1989|24|Toulouse (France)
    Mikheil Nariashvili|Loosehead prop|1990|21|Montpellier (France)
    Shalva Mamukashvili|Hooker|1990|27|Sale Sharks (England)
    Zurab Zhvania|Hooker|1991|13|Stade Français (France)
    Davit Zirakashvili|Tighthead prop|1983|44|Clermont (France)
    Davit Kubriashvili|Tighthead prop|1986|38|Stade Français (France)
    Levan Chilachava|Tighthead prop|1991|18|Toulon (France)
    Giorgi Chkhaidze|Lock|1981|78|Lille (France)
    Giorgi Nemsadze|Lock|1984|44|Tarbes (France)
    Konstantin Mikautadze|Lock|1991|26|Toulon (France)
    Vakhtang Maisuradze|Lock|1987|22|Albi (France)
    Mamuka Gorgodze|Flanker|1984|57|Toulon (France)
    Shalva Sutiashvili|Flanker|1984|43|Massy (France)
    Giga Tkhilaishvili|Flanker|1991|16|Batumi R.C
    Lasha Lomidze|Eightman|1992|6|Béziers (France)
    Beka Bitsadze|Eightman|1991|9|Locomotive Tbilisi
    Giorgi Begadze|Scrumhalf|1986|26|Kochebi Bolnisi
    Vasil Lobjanidze|Scrumhalf|1996|0|Armazi Tbilisi
    Lasha Malaguradze|Flyhalf|1986|51|Bagnères (France)
    Lasha Khmaladze|Flyhalf|1988|34|Lelo Saracens
    Merab Sharikadze|Centre|1993|28|Aurillac (France)
    Tamaz Mchedlidze|Centre|1993|21|Agen (France)
    Davit Kacharava|Centre|1985|76|Enisey-STM (Russia)
    Sandro Todua|Winger|1987|45|Lelo Saracens
    Alexander Khutsishvili|Winger|1992|0|Kochebi Bolnisi
    Merab Kvirikashvili|Fulback|1983|80|Montluçon (France)
    Giorgi Aptsiauri|Fullback|1994|1|Aia Kutaisi

This team looks really impresive, the forward pack is stronger than the team who played against Ireland. Kakovin, Zirakashvili and Gorgodze are back with Georgia, Zhvania is usually a loosehead prop (he played loosehead when he came on the pitch against Ireland) but Stade Français turned him at hooker to cover injuries and he do very well. Basilaia, who started number 8 against Ireland, looks out of the radar both at club (Perpignan) and national team and replaced by the powerfull 22-years old Lasha Lomidze, who is impressive this season at Béziers in ProD2 and was named MOTM for his first start for Georgia last November against Japan. Clermont's flanker Viktor Kolelishvili (the guy who put his foot on Ryan's eye) is out for the season (knee injury - ACL)
As for the backs, it's about the same who played against Ireland, only 2 changes : scrum half Vazha Khutsishvili is injured and replaced by a promising 18 years old player, Vasil Lobjanidze, who is a regular starter in the georgian championship. winger Muraz Giorgadze is replaced by the uncaped Alexander Khutsishvili (choice of the coach)

In other news, Zurab Zhvania will still play for Stade Français, he signed a 4 years contract!
That's him in action, he is very dynamic :

I watched a bit of the Stade V Grenoble game and Zurab Zhvania looked very good. Made a great break for a try. Looks very athletic and playing him at hooker will work out very well for Georgia as he'll have two monsters of props beside him. Wouldn't particular like to play against that front row! Also good to see some younger players are coming into the backline, good idea to blood them before the WC. Hopefully a few of the younger backs get contracts in France.

Great to hear about the new national stadium, I see it's that really rich businessman that's putting the money into it. The IRB gave him some sort of award before Christmas. I presume for normal matches aginst Germany and Portugal they play in the new stadium then for bigger games against Russia and Romania they'll play in 55,000 seated stadium?

Only 2 home games this year for Georgia, against Portugal and Russia. IIRC both games will be played at Mikheil Meskhi Stadium (27K seats). Maybe the 55K seated stadium is used by soccer the week of the game against Russia

a game against them for entry into a 6 nations might be a good idea or whoever bottoms 6 nation (long term). it would certainly liven things up for any of the dead rubber games

I always thought this myself. Obviously there are other issues to consider, but given there's the Six Nations B and other European leagues which have straight promotion/relegation, so one would think in the interests of fairness and the development of rugby as a whole, there should really be more of a reward for the Six Nations B winners.

In recent years, it's nearly always been Italy or Scotland that finishes bottom. Apart from the anomaly of two years ago when France did.

Now the play-off doesn't have to be a once-off game, it can be like they do for the last World Cup spot and play home and away, with the aggregate number of points over the two games deciding the winner. Which would reduce the likelihood of a shock upset. But still provide the possibility for Six Nations B teams to compete.

I think Georgia or whoever should definitely be given a chance to play Italy or Scotland. I doubt they would win (at the moment at least) but the opportunity should be there.

I suspect there are two main issues at stake here. Firstly, the IRB probably doesn't want too many mismatches in the Six Nations. Which, if say Romania or Georgia somehow got promoted, you'd likely see a lot, especially in the away games. We saw what a second-string Ireland did at home a few months back to Georgia. You generally don't see many absolute thrashings handed out (say over 50 points) in the Six Nations, even in games involving the weaker teams.

The second problem is money. I'd imagine that one of the main reasons Italy was admitted back in 2000 was that its rugby federation has got quite a sizeable budget. Plus it's a very significant country internationally. And Rome is a great place to go for a weekend, imagine the mutual benefits of 10-15000 travelling fans going there. Same with Edinburgh. Now I know nothing about Tbilisi I must say, but I'd imagine there wouldn't be the same interest in going there for away fans. It's a lot further geographically for a start. Plus as we've already seen in this thread, their federation can't bring as much to the table in terms of finances. In addition, there's always the disastrous possibility (albeit extremely unlikely) of say a traditional power like France or Wales coming last and losing the play-off. Therefore not taking part for a year.

So I don't think the status quo is going to change for a while yet sadly.
