3 georgians in the RWC team of the week by Planet Rugby :
1 Mikheil Nariashvili (Georgia): Dominance in the scrum was at the heart of Georgia’s win at Kingsholm with Nariashvili playing his part. The loosehead prop also made seven carries during an impressive 60-minute outing.
8 Mamuka Gorgodze (Georgia): The Georgian giant turned in a match-winning performance for his country, leading from the front and scoring their first try. This was Georgia’s first win over Tonga since 1999 and Gorgodze made an eye-watering 24 tackles, along with eight offloads and five defenders beaten. He edges out Samoa’s try-scoring captain Ofisa Treviranus and France's Louis Picamoles.
9 Vasil Lobzhanidze (Georgia): The tournament's youngest-ever player wasn't overawed in the slightest for Georgia's opening clash with Tonga, marshalling his forwards magnificently. He wasn't afraid to try things, with a couple of sniping runs, and played a key role in helping them to their biggest World Cup win. A word for Aaron Smith who came up big when the All Blacks looked to be under the cosh against Argentina.

Georgian scrum half looked very lively alright
Would have given the Japanese scrum half the nod for best no 9 of round one though

Delighted to see Georgia win on Saturday. Hopefully they beat Namibia (which I assume they should) and put up a credible fight against Argentina. It will be one hell of an experience for them to play NZ as well.

There seems to be some good young talent emerging in Georgia and hopefully World Rugby and the major European powers back them to develop further.

They have nothing to lose on Friday and every to gain. Argentina have a lot of injury worries. Slim chance but they have a chance, playing the big teams now they must love it.

18 years old scrum half Vasil Lobzhanidze received offers from France, England, Ireland and Wales :
His World Cup performances will have turned a few heads and there has already been talk of a lucrative move from current team Armazi Tbilisi, the Georgian top division side that he has played club rugby at since the age of 11.

England, Ireland, Wales and France all hold potential destinations for Lobzhanidze but, for him, it's the latter that seems most appealing.

"These countries are awesome and they've got all got top level championships. Maybe France [would be best] because the majority of my Georgia team-mates play there, so it would be ideal for me. But I would consider offers from any top clubs, I would jump on it."

great scenes , and good to see some backs coming through, the centre 12 looks good too, but you seriously need a quality 10 to really push on.

Usually, the flyhalf is Khmaladze but was injured. Malaguradze is not a good attacker and plays #12 with his club, but he was good in defence.
I think, in a near future, the flyhalf will be Revaz Jinchevalashvili, he had a great U20 tournament last May

The 12 in Merab Sharikadze, he plays in french ProD2 with Aurillac. Born 1993, so I hope he will play at higher level soon

Quick question doesn't Zurab Zhvania play hooker too? Georgia really need to a good hooker, that one who plays for Sale isn't great, maybe a bit harsh as he was coming back from a really bad injury.

Hopefully the scrum half gets signed in the coming weeks.

Does every Georgian that ever makes it play outside of the country now?

Or is it leaning that way?

That's an enormous amount of players playing in a neighbouring country. Does much talent stay in their leagues?

Joining the list of questions here.

Where are the players coming from? Clubs, schools or are academies collecting people at a teenage level and training them?

The reason I ask is just because of the lack of backs. I find it amazing that there is such a culture of churning out forwards.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy for Georgia. I hope automatic qualification for 2019 doesn't mean they end up missing potentially use Di qualifying matches, and instead get some more tour games.

Yes he play both. Last year he plays Top14 games at Loosehead and Challenge Cup games at hooker and with Georgia he played 6 Nations B at hooker and november tests at Loosehead

I hope Lobzhanidze will sign for a good club

The standard of the georgian championship is pretty low. But salaries are also low that's why there are so many players who signed outside Georgia. For example, fullback Beka Tsiklauri (who scored the try against All Blacks) played in Poland until 2013. But most of georgians are going to France, from Top14 to amateur level.
The Georgian Rugby Union helps youth players to join professional academies but sometimes helps financially a club when a player wants sign for an amateur foreign team.

There are 2 academies in Georgia : Shevardani (at Tbilisi) and Kutaisi.
I think quality backs are coming.
    At this RWC :
scrumhalf Lobzhanidze, 18 years old (19 today)
centre Sharikadze, 22 years old and 40 caps
    centre/winger Mchedlidze, also 22 and 35 caps
wingers Aptsiauri, Pruidze, Giorgadze all born 1994, scrumhalf Khutsishvili born 1993; centre Talakhadze born 1994, missed the RWC out of injury.
All these players can still progress.

From the U18 team, who reached european championship final, scrumhalf Aprasidze was really promising, and able to kick penalties from his own half! Centre Saba Svimonishvili is currently in South Africa with The Sharks Academy.

From the last U20 World Rugby Trophy, flyhalf Jinchvelashvili and fullback Svanidze were outstanding. winger Ioseb Kikvadze looked very skilled.

And a bit younger, Ardash Darboevi, centre winger or fullback, fast and very powerfull!

I forgot Matthew Janney. A 23-years old centre who plays for Oxford University. Also played for Saracens in the friendly against Bulls few months ago. Already capped by Georgia 7's thanks to a georgian grandfather (Janashvili), georgian coach Milton Haig is very interested by him

Hooker Jaba Bregvadze signs for Worcester Warriors. He is the second georgian at the team, with youth loosehead prop Val Rapava-Ruskin.
No, I hope thanks to their good RWC, flanker Giga Tkhilaishvili and scrumhalf Vasil Lobzhanidze will sign for a top team
Also, hooker Mamukashvili and flyhalf Lasha Malaguradze still unattached I hope they will find a club

    Giorgi Tsutskeridze (Brive)

    Backs
    Davit Kacharava (Enisei-STM)
    Tamaz Mchedlidze (Agen)

Suprising to see U20 flanker Giorgi Tsutskiridze in Brive's squad, I hope he will get some gametime!
Also, Worcester hooker Jaba Bregvadze is missing (I think he signed after the teams had to give their 38 names to EPCR). Brive loosehead prop Karlen Asieshvili is also missing, other first team players are missing and some youth players (including Tsutskiridze) were added.

One week after being the first georgian back to start a Top14 game since 8 years, winger Tamaz Mchedlidze scored twice against Pau :

He started the season for Clermont as RWC cover of Kayser.
He is the 4th georgian to play for Toulon this season with Gorgodze, Mikautadze and Chilachava

God thats an impressive stat!! If they were in the EU (ie had alot of money) they'd already be in the 6/7Nations I reckon.

    Well done to them!!

Interesting fact : Andorra's front row who faced Cyprus yesterday is 100% georgian, thanks to the 36-months residency rule.
Galaktion Gagnidze now plays for Castanet in french Federale1 while Jamrulidze and Rekhviashvili still play for VCP Andorra

Scrumhalf Bidzina Samkharadze (60 caps) started the romanian Super Liga semi final for Baia Mare against Steaua Bucharest. His team won 19-13.

breakthrough scrumhalf Vasil Lobzhanidze played flyhalf for his club Armazi Tbilisi this week

1996-born eightman Beka Gorgadze made his ProD2 debut last week for Stade Montois

He is the second U20 georgian player to made his professional debut after tighthead prop Giorgi Melikidze with Stade Français.

Usually flanker, powerfull Otia Giorgadze (also born 1996) played for the first time at lock for Clermont esporis (U22 team) and he scored 2 tries.

These 3 players will surely be in the Georgia U20 squad who will play the Junior World Cup. They will join other talented players, like scrumhalf Vasil Lobzhanidze (already 10 caps for the senior team, including 4 in at RWC), rumoured to sign for Brive soon, and fullback Irakli Svanidze (1 cap)

Georgia will be in the 2016 JWC Pool A, with New Zealand, Ireland and Wales

Georgia U20 will play 2 tests against Argentina U20 and 2 others agaisnt Uruguay U20 next february

The team included 4 Junior World Rugby Trophy winner, tighthead Giorgi Melikidze, eightman Beka Gorgadze, scrumhalf Vasil Lobzhanidze and flyhalf Revaz Jinchvelashvili.

Its Great to sea Georgia continuously improve, and I think that they will be hear to come for years, I dont think it will be a generational think as they are churning forwards players regularly who are playing professional rugby, however they need more backs, if you look at there World Cup Squad the Back-line contained a couple of players not playing at the highest level and I think that this hurt them in there ability to grab a try form nowhere(The intercept against the all blacks an exception).
Are they just concentrating on producing Forwards over there? I mean that young Scrum half they produced was exceptional (Vasil Lobzhanidze). They need to get more of there back-line playing at a D2 level in France I think... or am I wrong?

  • Registered Users Posts: 251 ✭✭croket

    Yes, backs need to improve.
Currently, centre/winger Tamaz Mchedlidze plays for Agen in Top14 and is a regular starter.
centre Merab Sharikadze is the first choice at inside centre for Aurillac in ProD2.
centre Davit Kacharava played European Challenge Cup with Enisei-STM in Russia and scored twice against Newcastle Falcons.

Vasil Lobzhanidze signed a 3-years-deal for Brive in Top14. I hope he will have some gametime.

Other promising backs are 20-years old flyhalf Revaz Jinchvelashvili, who played against Germany and scrumhalf Gela Aprasidze, born 1998, and started both games against Argentina U20

Georgia U20 played 2 tests against Argentina U20.
They lost the first test 36-17 but the score was 22-17 after 60 minutes
They lost the second test 49-11, while both sides maked some changes.

Tought, I don't think these results mean anything, because Georgia U20 played without their 4 best players :
    - scrumhalf Vasil Lobzhanidze (12 caps, 4 RWC caps)
    - eightman Beka Gorgadze (4 caps, regular starter for Stade Montois in ProD2), future Gorgodze according to Georgian coach.
    - tighthead prop Giorgi Melikidze (1 cap, played 3 Top14 games for current champion Stade Français this season.
    - flanker Otar Giorgadze (2 caps, he impress a lot with Clermont academy, always praised and scored a lot of tries for U22 team.

But also without all foreign-based players except Neparidze and Tsutskiridze : prop Tabidze (Bordeaux), hooker Nefaridze (Stade Montois), lock Zoidze (Clermont), backrow Javakhia (Lyon), flyhalf Gulmagarashvili (The Sharks Academy), centre Svimonishvili (The Sharks Academy) and winger Yurini (Lyon) + Gorgadze, Melikidze and Giorgadze. But also winger Kveseladze, injured, who played last season for Auckland Academy and played 2015 U20 World Trophy despite he was born 1997.

I hope Georgia will play 2016 Junior World Cup with a full squad .

In other news, Toulon's coach Bernard Laporte praised a lot 1995-born hooker Badri Alkhazashvili "he is very professional, and very strong. I think he will play against La Rochelle. He is a beast! He makes very good throwing in the lineout, he is passionate, he will be the next hooker for Georgia. He was at school in New Zealand with the son of Diego Dominguez and 3 years ago he said to Diego "one day I will play for Toulon". He has a big potential".
Other georgian hooker at Toulon, Iuri Natriashvili, scored a try last week

Georgia won the Championship - again easily - they should be pushing the Powers that be for a 2 legged game agains wooden spoon - Italy - for entry to 6 Nations - if they win , then Italy deserve there place , if not ...

    From todays telegraphy

In contrast, Italy were decimated and dreadful and with Georgia attracting more than 50,000 to watch them beat Romania and so once again win Europe’s second tier championship their desperation was terribly timed.

In contrast, Italy were decimated and dreadful and with Georgia attracting more than 50,000 to watch them beat Romania and so once again win Europe’s second tier championship their desperation was terribly timed.

I dont know if it is feasible but maybe add Georgia to the u20s championship.

Yep,, they won 38-9, scoring 6 tries, in front of 52 000 fans (more than Ireland-Scotland played the same day).

I fully agree. Last year Georgia U18 reached the final of U18 European Championship.
U20 team won Junior World Rugby Trophy and will play U20 World Cup this year.
In 2017 Georgia will host U20 World Cup.
Last week Georgia U18 trashed Romania U18 49-10
And 2 1996-born players started the game against Georgia in 6 Nations B
5 current U20 georgians are already capped with the senior team.
All U20 players are playing either in french academies or in georgian senior championship.

the above atmosphere would be great at a sometimes sterile 6 Nations - Italy would need to up there development overall , don't see why a playoff between wooden-spoon and Championship doesn't occur - if they are so much better they will win easily over 2 legs

Here is a list of U20 players abroad and/or already capped by senior team.
Most of them are players to watch for the next Junior World Cup.
Loosehead prop Vakh Abdaladze from Leinster U20 and Clontarf could have been added but he already played for Ireland U18 and U19

3 Georgians vs 2 Georgians = a win for Toulon.

    It really is that simple.
