Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Super performance from Villa that.

Baker - the player that makes every Villa fan shiver - gets man of the match. That's what sort of game it was.

    FINAL WHISTLE!!?

    Still 2nd, still unbeaten.

10 points in 4 games for Villa now, and Liverpool looking shaky again.

If you told me before the game that Liverpool wouldn't be able to score on a back four of Hutton, Baker, Senderos and Aly Cissokho, I would have chuckled.

Turned out they all played really well. Granted with a lot of protection.

Villa deserved it and good luck to them.

What a hot, beautiful, sexy, gorgeous result

That could have gone on for another 940 minutes and we still wouldn't have scored

Early days with new team though.

Well that is a nice result, 10 points closer to safety :D

That was as bad as I've seen us play in a long, long time. Was Guzan even tested once?

    Desperate.

Great job by Villa, congrats to their fans.

2 up front from now on for Liverpool. 1 up front has been tried, hasn't worked. Didn't work today.

I wonder is the hiring of Roy Keane what is making the difference for Villa defensively?

They look so organised this season compared to the last couple.

Baker aside (who's not played enough to really lob in with the rest), they've been brilliant all season. Cissokho looks a steal, and Senderos seems to have forgotten who he is. Maybe we brainwashed him and he's now convinced he's Paul McGrath or something.

Curious to know how much of this is down to Keane's influence

Here's an interesting Aston Villa stat.

    Shots on target: 6
    Points: 10

Liverpool finding how difficult it is to play with a squad, they got very lucky injury wise last year

A lot harder to win games with squad players

Lovren looks a very dodgy buy

Mights have a punt on Villa, 12/1 is hard to resist.

A big ''well done'' to Villa this evening. That's 2 wins and 2 draws in the last 4 seasons at Anfield now. Amazing stat, I wish City had a similar one. That being said, Liverpool looked very , very ordinary tonight. Missing Sturridge and, of course, Suarez. I think they're going to find this season difficult, with their extra CL commitments.

If Liverpool still had Suarez they'd have won that.
    Suarez = Bale at Spurs.

He'd at the very least have managed to dive and win a peno for the equalizer anyway

Rodgers got exactly what they deserved there. Took Villa lightly with his team selection and was punished.

    Wow.

Is that what €150M buys you?

Very poor Liverpool. No urgency at all. Expected a lot more especially at home. Possession means feck all when you do nothing with it.

In fairness it was total muck. €150M of which about €120M was on the pitch for that game in front of the home fans.

    Twas pants.

It was a horrible game of football. The result is all that matters I guess.

When you sell your best player and replace him with chancers that's what happens.

  • Lol delighted for villa

I think Rodgers showed again how poor he is in the transfer window, not to name individuals but a 60 plus million strike force for those players is simple shocking!

Another 60 plus million on that back 5 is an other joke!

This is what happens when half your players played for the team that finished 8.

Did he not play his first choice team of the players available with the exception of Sterling?

Sterling aside, when looking at the bench I'm not sure who else he could have played to make his team selection stronger.

Liverpool fans being very gracious in defeat, fair play.

Think it was a mistake to rest sterling here instead of vs the Hungarians mid week as they needed his creativity, energy and tbh attacking form from the off but villas rag tag bunch of defensive players continue to play better than anyone expects so villa continue to not have been scored against by an opposing player while gabby once again pops up with a big goal to celebrate his new contract.

I thought you had 2 on the posts. Not sure who was on the back post, but Gerrard looked to be on the front post

You're absolutely right. But resting your 2nd best player when your best player is out injured is definitely taking Villa far too lightly.

Well besides Sturridge who would you consider a success?

Coutinho? Has a lot of off days but will be considered a success because of the fee paid for him.

Very pedestrian, disappointing performance from Liverpool but well done Villa for a very professional, disciplined performance. I can't recall them being properly troubled once in the 90+ minutes and I'd like to see them do well this season.

Someone pointed out (not sure if it was this thread or the Superthread) that Liverpool were shaking starting out last season too before gaining momentum. Hopefully it'll be a case of history repeating.

That's making the assumption that Sterling was rested as a sort of box-ticking excercise rather than because he needed a rest.

If he wasn't fit to start he wasn't fit to start.

We played the strongest team available really. You could argue that there was a tactical mistake in playing only one up front but that's a different matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 605 ✭✭✭breghall

i don't think one up front works well for us. I think we need 2 up there, by the way we play we seem to function better and create more chances with 2 up front...... strictly IMO ....

Do you make up your mind on all new signings after 4 games (less in most cases) or only non Arsenal players?
