I located a "How to start your computer in Windows" little video on YouTube, and bookmarked it.

It is in Urdu, a language I do not speak; but I am very patient with foreigners.

So now whenever I get one of those calls I whistle up my YouTube off the Bookmarks list, and lay the phone handpiece down beside the speakers. Then I make a cup of tea.

They're always gone when I get back. I hope they learned something. :-)

PS I offer it here in the pious hope that it may solve computer problems for all your unwanted callers.

Just realised I haven't had these guys since I changed my phone for Eircom to UPC. The whistle is beside the new phone, but I have actually enjoyed stringing them along more than blasting their eardrums. Somebody must fall for them, as otherwise they would have stopped years ago.

the whistle wouldnt do you much good. modern telephone systems have volume limiters.

It's a bit like spam email. I'd say if they spam a million email accounts, a handful of idiots will engage with them and send them on money. The same with the Microsoft windows scam. My father fell for it, but he claims now that he was only dragging it out to see how far they would go. When they asked him for payment, he told them that his sons looked after all that, and they hung up. Still, they managed to get to the stage of having the remote access ! I fixed that up though not long after

A lady in a company I worked for fell for it, she said she thought it was IT ringing her up to tell her there was something wrong with her corporate laptop while working from home.
