Classic policies for Japanese cars are easier to obtain than regular policies.
My Zx for instance was insured for the year for €180

Only 5 years to go for the DC2! I tried this year but nobody will consider 15 year old to be classic any more it seems.

As an owner of an '89 Nissan 300zx, I would agree (even if mine wasn;t a JDM import). The cars are designed for Japanese fuel which is normally 3 RON ahead of our standard pump fuel

I saw an FTO buyer's guide that stated that FTO was designed to run on 100 RON petrol back in Japan, so if you imported one to Europe, you'd need to aim for running on 98 RON petrol.

If you are in an owners club it is easier to get insurance for modern classics. I've heard (on here) of a 01 7 series being insured as a classic.

Getting insurance on an FTO is not easy; its one of the reasons they can be gotten for cheap. If he is a learner/newly qualified then he may well find the cost of insurance prohibitive.

He is on a learner permit and won't be touching the fto until he has full license. He is also 38 years old, which will help :pac:

Judging from Wikipedia, the BMW "bits" were as follows:
    - 2.0 litre diesel engine
    - Z-axle
    - In-car entertainment systems

The Z-axle was not a good design.

    More bmw than that imo.
The entire platform was a bmw design intended for future front drive models that went on to be used in the mini too.
keys for the 75 are direct from bmw only - its a complete bmw system. I'm sure there is much more also as they are damn well bolted together.

He will still be a newly qualified driver; being 38 years old might help a bit but Id still be very surprised if he doesnt find it very difficult.
