Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I want to go to some of the freshers events but they all say "strictly over 18s" (The ones that involve drinking) but I'm not 18 so I was wondering do they actually care or are they really strict on the age limit? (For buying alcohol)

    That's a very smart question.

    That's a very smart question.

Plenty of places say "over 18s only" but they still let people under 18 buy drinks there so yes, it kind of is a smart question, or at least it's not a bad one. Don't comment if you've nothing to contribute

you dob will be on your student ID which you will be asked to produce when buying a ticket to an event and if you are not over 18 you won't be allowed attend.

For the balls, DCU hire out security staff and they check everyone. For other events, I'm not sure.

Under 18 student cards will have a yellow stripe through them. So its easy for security to know if you're under 18

In Dublin you'll find everywhere in generally strict, they just can't take the chance - so unless you look about 30, you'll probably get ID'd in most places.

As for the college, well at any DCU event such as a fresher ball, your student card will suffice as ID, even though it doesn't have your date of birth printed on it, if you're under 18 they have a big yellow strip on it, you get it removed when you turn 18. Also for events they hire security and they pretty much ID everyone, I think they'll even ask you to bring another form of ID like an age card.

The only place you'll probably get served easily is in the NuBar (the college bar). There's no door staff, and usually the people working behind the bar are students in DCU, so unless you look 10, they'll serve you. Be careful though, there's a few non-students working that will ask for ID.

So in short, you'll need ID to get into any alcohol related event in DCU, but like a club, once you're in, you obviously won't be ID'd when buying drink. But you'll be able to go into the NuBar anytime during the year and usually won't be ID'd.
