Electric blender

Hello, I'm gonna bake a cake! Never did one before so will probably be a disastar. Anyhoo, all the recipes I'm looking at say I need an electric blender. I seem to remember my mother using just a hand held skimming thing. Can I do this? Don't wanna buy something I may never use again. Thanks
