Elm Mount 3½-1½ St Benildus B

We only had four players after a day mix-up by one of our players.

Means the league table after three rounds is like this -
Pos	Team MP	GW	GD	GL	Pts
1	St Benildus A	3	13	2	0	14
2	Enniscorthy	3	12	2	1	13
3	Malahide	3	10	3	2	11 1/2
4	Curragh 3	9	3	3	10 1/2
5	Blanchardstown	3	7	2	6	8
6	Rathmines A	3	5	4	6	7
7	Elm Mount	3	4	4	7	6
8	Naomh Barróg	3	5	2	8	6
9	St Benildus B	3	4	2	9	5
10	Rathmines B	3	3	2	10	4
11	Inchicore	3	2	2	11	3
12	Bray/Greystones	3	1	2	12	2

Malahide 2½-2½ Naomh Barróg

Last two games on Saturday (Curragh v Blanchardstown and Enniscorthy v Rathmines B)
Pos	Team MP	GW	GD	GL	Pts
1	St Benildus A	4	17	2	1	18
2	Malahide	4	12	4	4	14
3	Enniscorthy	3	12	2	1	13
4	Curragh 3	9	3	3	10 1/2
5	Rathmines A	4	8	5	7	10 1/2
6	Naomh Barróg	4	7	3	10	8 1/2
7	Blanchardstown	3	7	2	6	8
8	Elm Mount	4	5	4	11	7
9	St Benildus B	4	5	3	12	6 1/2
10	Inchicore	4	5	3	12	6 1/2
11	Rathmines B	3	3	2	10	4
12	Bray/Greystones	4	2	3	15	3 1/2

I expect Enniscorthy to get a big win - possibly 5-0 - against Rathmines B. Could mean a four point gap at the top after four games (unless Curragh get 4 or more against Blanch). But still a long way to go, and none of the top four have yet played each other. Even Rathmines A have only played St Benildus A of the top five.

My youthful opponent gave me a good game, finding resources I had not spotted. He can only get better in the future.

Rathmines B 1-4 St Benildus A

Slightly surprised Rathmines B are struggling as much as they are; they've a very young team, but there's plenty of promising players there. That said, the Bodley is a lot stronger than last year of course (when half the league was relegated)

Interesting. Malahide must be favourites to miss out on promotion now.

St Benildus B v Curragh postponed due to a clash with the Leinster Schools finals, which took up most of our players. Rescheduled for next week.

St Benildus B 2-3 Curragh

Quite happy with that.

Yep. Pretty much guarantees Enniscorthy the title (as I predicted at the start of the thread!) Deservedly so; best team by a distance. I think they are the first team to mathematically secure promotion too? Curragh, Malahide and St Benildus A can't all catch Enniscorthy as we have to play both the others.

But our players will be kicking themselves after that. Fairly sure we had winning chances (not just that we were better) in all five games; how we came out of it with just 1½ I don't know.

But if we play like that for the next two games and we should still go up. Just need to be that bit more clinical and hopefully we'll have a rematch against Enniscorthy next season!

I would like to congratulate both teams on very nice games. As Enniscorthy Chess Club Coach and Private coach of 4 players in the team I had a look into games . Firstly at the start of the season I tried to peak form of my players for March and April 2015 . Augustin won 200 + rating points in Bunratty so he just explode a bit early . Chess is 40% psychology and 99%Tactic so therefore I use this saying a lot . I do not insist on openings quite a lot but I do insist on tactic and I am not in panic if my players have some problems after opening in fact they are then in House where they were born . I finally got my Fide Trainer title after 3000 kids that learnt how to play chess with me and many many Irish Champions , 2 British , 2 youngest FM in Ireland all from Kilkenny . Was very proud to have one of the youngest teams to win Armstrong and I was part of the team .

Now talking about training . This is big secret of the trade. The most important factor is to make your students to feel special and best. This is what I managed to give Ryan, John C, Aravind M, Pornima M , Robert W , Eion M , Sarah and Catherine etc .
I spend usually 15 minutes talking to my students and I praise them a lot .
Each player is different character and coach must adopt the style to personality . This is hard part of the job .

Some said that Kilkenny pulled 2nd team etc. In 2010 I stopped coaching for Kilkenny Chess Club and in 2013 started with Enniscorthy . When I left Kilkenny they had 4 teams now only one . Enniscorthy is in good shape now .
Parents and Coach with hard working smart kids can achieve a lot !

Looking forward to clash in next year !

Threw away at least a point, if not more, again. Still, tough learning curve!

Curragh 3-2 St Benildus A. Missing our top two players again. This is turning into a disaster for us!

Means Enniscorthy have won the league; congrats!

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,278 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Rathmines B 2½-2½ Bray/Greystones
Rathmines B 3½-1½ Elm Mount

Means the league table is -
Pos	Team MP	GW	GD	GL	Pts
1	Enniscorthy	10	40	4	6	42
2	St Benildus A	10	31	7	12	34 1/2
3	Curragh 9	26	6	13	29
4	Malahide	9	25	8	12	29
5	Naomh Barróg	8	15	10	15	20
6	Elm Mount	9	15	6	24	18
7	Rathmines A	9	14	6	25	17
8	Bray/Greystones	8	13	6	21	16
9	Blanchardstown	8	14	3	23	15 1/2
10	St Benildus B	9	13	5	27	15 1/2
11	Rathmines B	9	11	7	27	14 1/2
12	Inchicore	8	12	4	24	14

We actually have a point more of a gap over Malahide/Curragh than I thought, which is something at least...

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,168 Mod ✭✭✭✭L1m1tless

I wouldn't worry I say you guys will get promotion. There was just no stopping Enniscorthy this year. You did predict it!

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,278 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

I did - and I also predicted we wouldn't quite make it!

Problem in our last couple of games is that we've not had a full team out - been missing three players each of the last couple of games.

And then ye sneaky go and change your board order too!!

But Malahide's next game is against our Bs - if we can do to them what we did to Curragh, our As should be ok.

If.

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,168 Mod ✭✭✭✭L1m1tless

ah we learned that trick from playing your B's! Fool me once etc etc. :) I hope your B's do well against Malahide that would help us stay in promotion position.

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,278 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Yeah, we thought ye might alright, but there was nothing we could really do! Given that our Bs took two points off ye from that trick, it was arguably worth it in the end.

What is this with team swap thing? We never do it as this clearly show the fear . Just play according the rating and that is all . I mean this just show how some teams spend time and energy on off board things. I prefer to teach kids how to win in better position . This is the weakens when one focus on openings rather then other things. Kotov wrote nice book about it !

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,168 Mod ✭✭✭✭L1m1tless

Swapping around players and playing to your strengths is never a bad idea.

Its been proven in practice, using the rules to your advantage is part of the game.

There is a difference between being a coach and being a captain.

• Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 182 ✭✭Chess_Coach

I know that is why my team is on the top !

Don't see why team order should be rigid anyway.

Why should just one player get exposure on board 1? And a player playing on board 1 regularly will have a different match on board 5 - it might be the difference between playing 100 points above their rating and 200 points below.

Good to mix things about like that.

• Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 182 ✭✭Chess_Coach

I prefer this way as board one is the strongest player and will have tournament of 11 games on board 1 .
Same amount whites and blacks etc . The board one should be deserved . The place in team as well .

Here is my theory - I am not result or rating focus coach my main focus is improvement of the play. The rating and results are secondary thing to me and I never knew what is my private students rating .
usually in the past Ryan , John , Eoin , Aravind use to inform me about rating as I wasnt interested at all . We have same team all the time simple as that . Same was in Kilkenny when I use to play and coach there . I do not remember that we had one meeting talking about future opponents same is now in Enniscorthy . At least I do not watch who is our opponent etc . We play and we enjoy in chess and hard work

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,278 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

That's grand. I've outlined my different view as well.

Its funny you should disagree with switching up the board order when your bodley team have been switching it up all season. Including having a 1400 on board 2 and a 1280 on board one. I agree with it though, its a winning strategy. A good bit of captaining! :D

We've been working off live ratings.

I am all for switching the boards to give people different playing opportunities, but it contradicts what Chess_Coach had been saying!

Chess coach coaches the Enniscorthy kids he is not the captain of the teams. We have been playing our strongest players on board 1. The boards have changed throughout the season. The 1280 playing on board 1 had a live rating of 1432. We have been using live ratings. This changed for our last 2 games due to the 150 point rule which is based on the September ratings we therefore are not able to play our strongest rated player on board 1. It's nothing got to do with chess coaches opinion be it for or against. It has simply got to do with live ratings.

My comment was obviously referring to his post

• Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 182 ✭✭Chess_Coach

The strongest player should play board one . All that strategy behind is just waste of time. White pieces , Black pieces team strategy is just pure nonsense. While others spend time to this some are improving their play. The best feeling is when you just win the game and match because of playing good chess . As well when you arrange team for match you just show fear . I would like the rule that you have to declare team 7 days before match but then it would take so much joy for strategy planners !

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,862 ✭✭✭mikhail

Would you ever just get over yourself? Most teams might swap two players for a critical match once in a season, if even that. That moral high ground you're standing on is a molehill.

• Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,278 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

St Benildus B 2.5-2.5 Malahide

Superb result for both our teams!
