'm pretty sure them Maori lads would love to hear you explain to them that they are descended from the Brits!

Isn't there almost nobody left that is 100% Maori?

Isn't the Irish flag the same as the Ivory Coast flag?

Or is it just a faded Italian flag?

A back to front Ivory Coast flag.

    List of 40 potential flags.

Personally like the second one myself.

    Hard to choose.

Honestly I think i'd keep the old one.

Lizzy is set to kick the bucket soon enough, best chance is if Charlie gets to sit in the big chair.

That will really up the odds of Australia (and Canada) finally putting on their big boy meritocracy pants and electing their own head of state.

Thereafter there might be a slim to medium chance of Australia changing their flag, NZ however are more content with keeping the "royals" and G.Britains flag.

    They'll keep it as is.

I'd pay in to see that one meself.

It could be simpler. One could be red and the other could be blue. To suggest that there's not striking similarities between the two is disagreeing for the sake of it.

    I disagree.

It's the Maori people that should have the final say, seeing as it was their land that was stolen under the banner of the Butchers Apron.

NZ is a fairly conservative country so I'd be surprised if this passed, parts of it are more English than England.

NZ gave women the vote in 1893 - Ireland 1922 (ok, the Irish didn't have a choice in that one, but the UK dragged it out until 1918)
NZ legalised prostitution in 2003 (note, it's illegal to coerce someone into becoming a prostitute, emphasising freedom of choice)
NZ legalised civil unions in 2005 and same sex marriage in 2013 - Ireland took to 2015 to stop mucking about (but am glad they finally did).
NZ legalised abortion in 1977 - Ireland, still waiting.

I don't think NZ is as conservative as you may think, and it's more multi cultural than many expect - especially the bigger cities. You might to visit again.

The new flag designs are crap.

In fairness, the state didn't exist until 1922 and we did elect the first female MP to Westminster

If you're going to quote me on something I said 11 months ago you could at least have a better response than that.

In fairness, the state didn't exist until 1922 and we did elect the first female MP to Westminster

We also had the first female government minister and UCC had the first female university professor in what was then the UK.

Women in Britian had to be over 30 and meet certain property owning criteria until 1928 to vote.

Ireland immediately has universal suffrage upon independence in 1922.

We're also the only country in the world to have has 3 consecutive terms of a female head of state (elected).

The political party system here has let women down very badly though. When women candidates stand here they've no issue being elected, so the issue is absolutely not the electorate.

The hold up on numbers is the political parties and "jobs for the boys" mentality.

Women's rights were cast aside very much after the 1930s by a jump towards extreme religious conservativism in Ireland though. It was odd given the very strong role women has played in the independence movement and there was probably more of a feminist vibe in the 1910s and 20s than the 1950 and 60s.

Ireland sort of has swings up and down on socially progressive and regressive periods through the 20th century. Biggest issue here was the church grabbing the levers of power from the 1930s right through to to the 1980s really.

Still a big legacy of that.

NZ isn't nearly as complicated !

Flags are not static when on a flagpost, they flap in the breeze. None of the NZ designs are shown in a breeze. Imo they will look bad as most of them are diagonal designs, from bottom left to top right, the worst for flying.

This is the best flag I've seen fluttering in the breeze. The colours rippled.

Best flags are simple and geometric.

I think that's why the tricolours look good.

Excessively complex designs can't be seen on a flag at a distance and when moving.

Your right - NZ is definitely less complicated.

Plenty of Scots, like Canada, and while similarly very imperialist in the Forties and Fifties, more Pacific-oriented now.

What do you mean plenty of Scots aswell? Are the Scots not British?

Yep a country's flag should be simple enough for a school child to draw.

And yet, reflect that country's history and culture. Perhaps replace the union jack with a stylised and simple picture of a man in a red coat setting fire to a traditional maori dwelling?

Or the signing of the treaty of waitangi.

I dont think the swirly design is suitable for a flag.

    Stick to the old one.

Maori guy signing a treaty while the guy in the red coat gesturing for him to do so plants a knife in his back?
