Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Servicing oil burner?

Renting an old house with oil central heating. The boiler seems pretty ancient and with the winter approaching (sorry) I'm wondering should I get (or ask the landlord to get) someone to service the boiler? Would it be worth it? Would it cost much?

It is the landlords responsibility. Unless it's in a bad way or needs repairs, it will cost roughly €80-€90 euro, assuming flexible hose needs changing.

Is it a case of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it', or would I be likely to notice an improvement in efficiency?

Servicing the boiler dosent mean fixing it. It's for effeciency and safety. Make sure whoever services it uses a flue gas analyser

No! certainly not. A good service will save you more than the cost of the service over a heating season and even more in a rarely serviced boiler.
Besides the landlord is required to have it serviced annually.

Have you had a look yourself?

One of the landlords that I do servicing for told me that he is required to have this done annually. I don't know if its because of rental or insurance requirements, but I doubt he would have it done as often if what he says is untrue.
Besides the above, it is also a recommendation by the manufacturers and OFTEC.

No, I didn't make the statement.

That to me sounds like a recommendation rather than a requirement based on some regulation or legislation.
