Extending work permit

    Hi,

I'm currently in Canada with my common law partner. We have both been in Canada for one year. We have two years on a working holiday visa and we want to extend. I think the maximum time we can work temporarily is for four years, but if we apply for a work permit at Christmas, will it be valid for the rest of the time (3 years), or do you need to apply every year? I don't fancy booking a flight home again at summer only to come back again to get the renewed visa, so xmas would be perfect. Trying to find an answer online but the CIC website is a nightmare.

    Niamh

You can't extend the IEC permits but you can apply for different permits which come with Permanent Residency so you could not be classified as temporary workers anymore.

The best thing to do is to fill in the Come to Canada questionnaire on the CIC site and that should give you the options at the end

Note that everything is changing to a new system called Express Entry at the end of this year, and no-one is quite sure what will happen next year, so I think if you are interested you should get your application in as soon as possible.
